About
Being the second oldest community in the state of Wisconsin and the oldest on the upper Mississippi River we have alot of history in our community. We have two historical museums. The Fort Crawford Hospital Museum gives information about Dr. Wm Beaumont, a post surgeon here at the Fort, the different treaties signed here, Blackhawk's surrender, surgical diaramas, a display of an old dentist office, display of an old pharmacy, etc. Our Museum of Prairie du Chien has displays and information of the War of 1812, Clamming and the button factories that were here, an iron lung, etc. We do have scavenger hunts for the younger visitors for both museums, to help keep them interested and busy.

This museum is nicely laid out and contains a wealth of information about the fort, the hospital and its place in history. A separate building is devoted to Prairie du Chien. This is a self-guided tour and well worth your time, especially if you like history..

Really enjoyed going through the Military Hospital Museum. Amazing stories and exhibits! This fort museum was a delightful find. For just about an hour you can learn a ton of interesting facts and see many items and exhibits on the self-guided tour. The gentleman behind the counter was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed talking to him. Don't miss this on your visit to Prairie Du Chien.

This is the perfect local museum. We learned so much about Prairie du Chien, from Fort Crawford to button making, from local high schools to mole celebrations (apparently celebrating both the animal and 6.02 x 10^23). My only disappointment was that the fort infirmary (the only building still standing from the original fort) didn't have a medical exhibit as advertised (apparently it was being updated). But it was still very much worth a visit.

We enjoyed our visit to the Fort Crawford Museum. We learned a lot about this part of WI history. The information on thhe fort and the medical experiments conducted there was quite enlightening. We also enjoyed the museum on Prairie du Chien history.

Super nice staff. Very welcoming. Small but packed with information. There are two buildings. We'r almost missed the second one. A nice, short stop that doesn't take hours to go through. One hour max unless you read and examine every little thing. Restroom in ther gift shop.

Fort Crawford stood guard over Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, from 1816 until 1856. Now, the Fort Crawford Museum displays the history of the fort, its city, and the many lives that crossed here.
Our family is filled with history buffs so it was a great time and an interesting site. We would recommend if history is your thing, this is a great place to visit!!

Spent a good 2 hours in the 2 primary buildings. Lots of very good historical data from photos to real equipment, like early century dental equipment. Fee for old goats is a reasonable $3.00

The focus is on the military hospital and tho small, the museum presented a good look at medicine in a military hospital. On the grounds is another museum with Prairie du Chien history and that too was worth the trip. I was amazed to discover that tobacco was a profitable crop in Iowa and that cigars were made in PdC.

Interesting little museum that can be walked through in an hour or two. Being very close to the IA-WI bridge and Villa Louis, this makes a great stop if you're on the road and want to rest for a bit. Younger kids will be a little bored, but older kids and teens should enjoy it - especially if interested in frontier or medical history. The best part are the pictures of the archeaological excavation of the original fort that took place in 1999 right under the street out front!
