So much social history in this place. The Villa and outbuildings and grounds depict life for the upper class and their servants during the late 1890's, especially the extravagance of the rich. {Louis Dousman may have been Wisconsin's first millionaire.} Almost 95% of the furnishings are original to the house. The attention to recreating the Villa to look as it... More

So much history to hear about here! Great for a family trip and a cute gift shot too! Also, a great photo-opt spot too!

This is a guided tour I had been looking forward to for many years after reading historical novels by August Derleth about the Dousman family. Fantastic, but not what i expected. I was expecting it to be the Dousman Mansion down the road we were going to tour, not the House on the Mound. Oh, well! Live and learn, and... More

Informative tour by a fairly knowledgable guide. Victorian style home with a lot of nice antiques. 1 small needlepoint picture in the main hallway that really caught my eye for it's excellent detail.

We were visiting family in the area and came upon this gem. What a treat to see the Victorian home with all its accoutrements still in place ! Our guide Trevor was also a gem - his in-depth knowledge of the history and habits of Dousman family and his obvious enthusiasm for the history of the area made it all... More

They have guided tours of the home and grounds along the Mississippi. The home is very ornate and interesting. The grounds are lovely and well maintained. Tour takes about an hour.

What a wonderful place. Amazing. We visited as participants in the annual War of 1812 event and loved it. The property and staff are amazing. Well worth the stop to see the mansion.

Toured the grounds and buildings with great tour guide! Even brought our kids and they liked it! Went during the weekend of the 1812 war reenactment so it was busier than usual. The reenactment was LOUD and a little longer than our kids would've liked but it got their attention. Enjoyed the kid friendly activities (stilts, militia march) but these... More

Really enjoyed our tour, was just the two of us so could ask many questions. Beautiful house and grounds. Many other buildings to explore.

This is a must see if you are anywhere close to Prairie du Chien and have an interest in history. The house has been incredibly restored, with 90% of the original furnishings, and the vintage photos are proof of that. Allow at least 2 hours for both the guided tour and your self tour. (Note: guided tours are stated to... More
