- Ellen BHortonville, Wisconsin702 contributionsGreat Sunday Afternoon StrollJust spent another great afternoon at the Paine Art Center and Gardens. Admission was free for Mother's Day, so my husband and I decided to browse the gardens after brunch. The gardens are absolutely beautiful, and many families were there enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll. The crabapple trees and the tulips were especially grand. If you go, don't miss the garden kaleidoscope. It is a big planter you can spin and view through several eyepieces. When the sun hits the flowers it is visually breathtaking! Admission to the Art Center itself was also free, but the line was way too long for our patience! Next time. . .Visited May 2021Written May 11, 2021
- Jennifer OFords, New Jersey158 contributionsMust do for Oshkosh.Definitely a must do for Oshkosh. Your admission covers a self guided mansion tour, art exhibits and access to the gardens. The house was beautiful and all art and rooms were very well explained on the interpretive signs. I recommend watching the film running in the basement to get the full backstory. The gardens were pretty but I think they would be more magnificent in the spring with the flowers blooming. I would definitely return again and again since the art exhibits change.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 7, 2023
- evansthecat44 contributionsThis is a do not miss stop in OshkoshStunning mansion. As we learned, it was never occupied by the builder because of a downturn in the lumber business. However, they have filled each room with beautiful period appropriate furniture and it has a comfy, lived in vibe. The stained and tinted glass throughout the space gave everything a warm glow. We enjoyed the art in the main gallery as well. It was well suited to the building. We must return to enjoy the gardens in the summer, but it made a great stop on a snowy Wisconsin Friday. We were also able to take in the area history museum across the street, also housed partly in a lumber era mansion.Visited February 2023Written March 12, 2023

I became a member in December after touring the annual Nutcracker exhibit. It was such an awe inspiring event that I decided I wanted to be a part of all of the exhibitions. I was able to attend the member only pre-opening of their latest exhibit featuring local artist Tom Utech. I was able to look through the castle without all of the Nutcracker additions. It was just as inspiring!

I’ve been to several exhibits at the Paine Art Center and Gardens over the years. They’ve all been great, the current Rodin exhibit (it will be on display through October 8, 2023) is particularly noteworthy. It is incredibly well curated. The sculptures by Rodin are incorporated throughout the museum, each one in a perfect setting. It’s definitely worth the trip to Oshkosh to see.

My husband and I recently visited the Paine to see the Christmas Nutcracker displays. The mansion is beautifully decorated throughout, cleverly integrating the Nutcracker theme.
Each room has its own design theme, all the way from the lady of the house dressing room to the main salon. The tale of the Nutcracker was present in a display in most of the exhibits. The trees were so attractively decorated, which picked up on the theme of each room. There even was an upside down tree!
I look forward to seeing the next Paine exhibit!

A truly beautiful place to visit. We have been here many times over the years and have enjoyed traveling exhibits such as Chihully Glass and Downton Abbey. Also there are recurring events like Rooms of Blooms, the annual plant sale and the Nutcracker.
All of these are set in the beautiful and historic Paine mansion. There are gardens, art collections and astounding architecture to enjoy.
This is a must see and once is not enough!

A must see venue in Oshkosh. Historical and beautiful. Traveling art collections set in a gorgeous mansion. Seasonal displays and a huge garden. Great setting for photo shoots. And the Christmas display is something you will remember forever .

If you're in the Oshkosh area, this is a must see. Beautiful mansion, history and gardens. Friendly staff. What a beautiful gift the owners and developers gave the Oshkosh community. Worth every penny of entry fee and glad to help support and keep this wonderful place open.

They had their Nature of Light tour at the time we went. Beautiful house & Gardens. We went during the day, the lighting in the gardens was on, but I'm sure it's fantastic at night. Inside, they had light displays in several rooms. Very stunning! A short video in the basement gives the history of the house & gardens. A definite must see!

We booked the guided tour for the Nutcracker and at the time of booking we were told the maximum number of participants within a group was 15. We were extremely disappointed when we arrived to find out the group had 46 ! You felt like a herd of cattle being moved from room to room, it was such a let down. The castle itself is beautifully decorated but if you are looking for an evening of storytelling and relaxation this is not the venue you are looking for.

Read between lines and check out the real history of the Paine. The family never moved in due to death threats from the under-paid laborers that lived in the row houses by the river. The workers threatened to blow up the hose if the Paines moved in, when the workers families were poor and owed everything to the rich Mr. Paine. Ask the locals whose grandparents worked inOshkosh during this time. Beautiful art and interesting decorating. Maybe if Mr. Paine was a far employer he would have enjoyed this mansion.

Do you offer scooter rental? I do walk, but, after four knee operations, walking and standing can be painful.

I have been there several times and haven't seen scooters for rent. It is handicapped accessible though, as they do have an elevator.

Are there any restaurants within a few blocks of the museum that are open for Sunday breakfast or lunch?

Yes, I would recommend the Fox River Brewing company/ Fratellos for lunch very much. Close enough to walk, if you wanted to on a nice day.
have not had breakfast there, so I can't speak to that menu or make a recommendation.

Do we need to join a tour to view the Paine Art Center Nutcracker in the Castle or can we tour the center on our own?
