We biked from Midway to Perrot State Park last Sunday. It was one of those 100+ heat index days and we were concerned about biking in that kind of heat, but there's a lot of shade, water stops and the trail is flat, so it ended up not being an issue. We had trouble finding the trailhead in Midway, so... More

Start at the Wildlife Refuge for great views of the Mississippi River. After leaving the refuge, you can take a short detour to Elmaro Winery, just located about a 1/2 mile from the trail Or, continue on the trail to Trempealeau, and stop in at the Trempealeau Hotel for a craft beer, before continuing down the trail through the Mississippi... Nice trail with very little grade. Was beautiful with all the wild flowers in bloom. Was nice going over all the bridges and seeing the national wildlife preserve.

This is a memorable American experience.....easily riding a bike along the Mississippi River. The trail is smooth for the most part and easy to pedal. Parking was conveniently close. For much of the ride to Trembeliou, we had the trap to ourselves. There are beautiful wildflowers lining the trail, birds singing and a few historical signs. The river is an... More

I live in Onalaska and ride the Great River Trail 3 times a week or more during the season. My most frequent ride is from Onalaska to Lyle's Landing. This is a very easy ride and the scenery and and wild life viewing are real nice. But what makes this a poor rating is the condition of the trail. Lack... More

Great segment of a 4 part 120+ mile rails-to-trails bike route. Essentially all of the route is a firm surface bike trail. Bike shops along the route if needed for repair, parts and rental. Blue Heron Bikes in Onalaska is right on the route.

This is a nice trail that travels along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries and backwaters. It is a former railway bed, so it is quite straight and flat, perfect for an easy run or bike ride. By most accounts it starts in downtown Onalaska and works its way up to Trempeleau, about 13 miles. There are a few benches... More

The trail is very relaxing and there are a lot of great views of nature in the coulee region. Would definitely recommend!

I rode this from La Crosse North to the Trempealeau Federal Reserve and back. The trail parallels the Mississippi River for some stretches giving some really beautiful river views. Trail surface is pretty good for the whole distance with very gentle grades. Very limited on trail water opportunities so be sure to bring your own.
