The Badger State Trail just north of Monticello is in pretty poor condition. Mostly grass with a couple of dirt ruts about a foot wide. There was also no notice posted that the Tunnel was closed. Trail is in desperate need of new gravel.

After seeing the great reviews for this trail, we had high hopes, but the Wisconsin DNR must have decided to take the summer off because the trail was a mess. My experience with these kind of rails to trails conversions is that they are finished with crushed and compacted limestone or gravel. This is neither, just two parallel ruts in the dirt, more akin to a horse path than a biking trail. The result was lots of mud and knee high brush if you rode outside the foot wide rut. Riding surface aside, there are no trash receptacles, benches, portapotties, and signage was minimal. We rode the 20 mile stretch between Belleville and Monroe and encountered trees that had fallen across the trail. The DNR has a lot of nerve charging for use of this trail when it's in such lousy condition.

This trail is loved by many locals and tourists alike. Whether your taking a stroll checking out the leaves changing color, going by bike, ATV,disabled scooter and of course snow mobiles! It goes for miles and miles, but you can enjoy it right here in town too. It's quite scenic and relaxing and lots of people just walk there dog's. It takes you to Twining Park, a bridge over the highway and to areas not available by car. Generally very busy on weekends when groups get together and travel to Darlington, New Glarus and other outlying cities via via trail. Have fun and be careful!

I bike this tail every week and I can say the Illinois Section of the tail is hands down muc better. The trimming of trees or lack of and the tail surface is crap. Seems like it always had big wash outs our pits.
