People who know Wisconsin are not surprised to encounter a massive collection of fishing lures, a monument to pickles, or even a mustard museum. But just how a significant collection of (mostly) European microcars found its way to Mazomanie is itself a bit mysterious. That said, this collection is well worth a visit, even if you're not a crazy car person. The tiny post-WWII cars are a testament to ingenuity, practicality (mainly resulting from lack of fuel and industrial manufacturing capacity after WWII), and style. The cars are proof positive that you don't need a big car to be "cool!" The cars are beautifully restored and maintained. There are about 25 of them on two-levels of the old stone building. While the museum is free (donations accepted), the hiccup is to identify when the place is open. As we discovered, even the opening days and hours posted on their website are not fully accurate. We were so fortunate, however, that the guy living in the adjacent house unlocked the museum and allowed us a private viewing even when the museum was officially closed.

The museum is not a "must see" unless you're a car fanatic, but if you have the chance to visit the place, it is well worth a stop!

What a surprise - so much more than we were expecting. A lovely collection of microcars and motorbikes beautifully presented in this private collection. We were honoured to have a personal guided tour for our pre-arranged visit. Highly recommended.

My husband noticed online that the museum would be open and he put it on our calendar. The owners/collectors have lovingly organized the museum and taken the time to provide history and interesting facts about the cars. Their passion for their collection shines though. The Museum is open dependent upon the owner's schedule so make sure to check online before you head out. They also take requests for opening online.

I ran across this researching a scooter ride in the area. It's a private collection of European microcars in an old blacksmith shop. For the uninitiated, micro cars were produced in many European countries after the war. Resources, including gas were scarce, and these were the answer. The cars are beautifully restored, and the engineering is fascinating. The building has two floors and is an attraction in itself.

We were unexpectedly informed of a second, antique motorcycle museum around the corner with a lot of old European bikes.

Check to be sure they're open, and if they are, DO NOT MISS THIS! It's a hidden gem.

If you email them, they'll probably find a time to open it for you. Although I'm not a car buff, I found it surprisingly interesting. It's a collection of ultrasmall cars meant for regular people to drive. For each they have a history of the model and the company. Quite a large collection on two floors.
