The ferry to Madeline Island was great and easy. We took a car. If you do so you'll want to be at the ferry dock at least 20 minutes before departure to queue up. You don't have to buy tickets ahead of time if you do not want. They'll take your cash/card in line. Then, they tell you where to drive on and off you go. The trip takes 30 minutes. You'll need a mask if you get out of the car.

Just spent a couple days in Ashland/Bayfield area and took the ferry across to Madeline Island. We took the car across, so that we could drive around the island as we just went in mid-sept and were unsure of what the weather would be. The ferry ride across I thought was reasonable for the day and it was convienient. It was a girlfriend trip to the area, and neither of us had ever been to that area. The weather was amazing, we hiked Bay State Park which was awsome. And we Kayaked the sea caves, definately will be going back.

This is one of the 3 ferry lines that are within the state of Wisconsin (not counting the ones crossing Lake Michigan). I am not sure what to describe here, but if you love ferries - you just love them! Outside of the boats themselves, there is a building with a neat waiting room, and some historical photos and info scattered around to peruse while waiting (which will not be long - ferries come and go pretty often).

This might have been the biggest disappointment on our vacation to the Apostle Islands. We did not think the visit to Madeline Island was worth the money for our van and family of seven, but we had to do it for our first visit to Bayfield. Not much to see on the island except for a bunch of other tourists. AThe state park beach was the highlight of our trek to Madeline. Then they want to charge you again for the museum. A disappointment!

To get to Madeline Island, there is a car ferry that leaves from the center of Bayfield and takes about 20 minutes and is a nice ride, with upper level seating for walkons. The frequency in summer and weekends is about every 30 min. but slows later and often terminates at 6PM. The landing is next to LaPointe businesses and close to the museum.

The staff were friendly and even offered folding chairs to my husband and I as we stayed with our daughter in her wheelchair. Wheelchairs, bikes and cars are transported on the lower deck. It was a smooth ride. The loading and unloading seemed to go quickly.

During a visit to Bayfield, we opted to bring our bicycles out to Madeline Island. The staff sold us tickets and instructed us on how to board the boat. We enjoyed the experience and the scenery during our round trip on the ferry. The bike trip around the island was a highlight of our trip.

Very efficient system.
They run three shuttles on the weekend, so we were pleasantly surprised that there was a 9:30am shuttle and we didn't wait in line.
We did ferry over our car and worked very smoothly.

I’ve never put my vehicle on a boat and sailed across Lake Superior. Needless to say these employees have it down! Very professional and easy

How much to take a vehicle on ferry round trip from Bayfield WI to Madeleine Island
Written October 2, 2019
It depends. If you are taking the ferry without a vehicle, it will cost in 2019 rates $15 for ages 12 years and older. 6-11 years is $7. If you include a car less 19 feet add an additional $27 to the passenger cost. A bicycle add an additional $7.50. A motorcycle will cost an additional $16.50. Of course, if you include a cargo trailer and hitch, you will add an additional $27-$39 on top of what is in place for the car. The trip one way is 25 minutes. We parked the car and took the ferry as a passenger. The town is all in walking distance.
