This was our first time using the Madeline Island Ferry. We recently traveled to Bayfield and took ferry to the island. For our Slingshot car, it was $59 round trip, a little more than expected. The wait time was not long for a Thursday, we basically got right on for depart, waited less than 15 minutes and the return was loading when we arrived and was able to fit. The staff was nice and accommodating. It was weird to see people wearing a mask when outside, but we get the precautions. We stayed in our vehicle. The wind was calm so the boat ride was easy. Most of the businesses on the island were closed, so that was disappointing, but Big Bay Town Park was good since we didn't have to pay and were able to walk on Lake Superior shore.

Who thought it could be this easy? Fast, efficient boarding, on-time service, and expert parking assistance (they really pack you on there!). But never fear - you can tell the staff is experienced! Taking a vehicle is not cheap; there is a fee for the vehicle as well as each person in it. However, it was well worth it for our trip to Madeline Island. If you are planning to go anywhere beyond the "downtown" a vehicle or scooter/bike rental on the Island is a must.

Family trip to Ashland, Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. Never been to Madeline Island before. I'm a planner and am ALWAYS nervous when I don't know how things are supposed to work until I get there. The vehicle ferry process is as simple as they say it is. Drive into Bayfield on Hwy 13 and take a right on Washington. Takes you right down to the loading ramp. The staff come up to your window for tickets and accept cash or credit. They tell you to go into a lane and you wait for the boat! Loading is super easy and they show you exactly what to do. We loved the ride over to the island. A relaxing 20 minutes or so. I recommend taking your car to get to the state park unless you're dead set on renting/riding a bike/scooter. It's a little longer than you think and it's not like the road is very wide. The price is high as everyone says. It was around $150 bucks for my Suburban full of family but it is what it is. They are the only game in town so you're either fine with it or you're not. I'm fine with it. They do a great job.

The ferry to Madeline Island was great and easy. We took a car. If you do so you'll want to be at the ferry dock at least 20 minutes before departure to queue up. You don't have to buy tickets ahead of time if you do not want. They'll take your cash/card in line. Then, they tell you where to drive on and off you go. The trip takes 30 minutes. You'll need a mask if you get out of the car.

Just spent a couple days in Ashland/Bayfield area and took the ferry across to Madeline Island. We took the car across, so that we could drive around the island as we just went in mid-sept and were unsure of what the weather would be. The ferry ride across I thought was reasonable for the day and it was convienient. It was a girlfriend trip to the area, and neither of us had ever been to that area. The weather was amazing, we hiked Bay State Park which was awsome. And we Kayaked the sea caves, definately will be going back.

This might have been the biggest disappointment on our vacation to the Apostle Islands. We did not think the visit to Madeline Island was worth the money for our van and family of seven, but we had to do it for our first visit to Bayfield. Not much to see on the island except for a bunch of other tourists. AThe state park beach was the highlight of our trek to Madeline. Then they want to charge you again for the museum. A disappointment!

To get to Madeline Island, there is a car ferry that leaves from the center of Bayfield and takes about 20 minutes and is a nice ride, with upper level seating for walkons. The frequency in summer and weekends is about every 30 min. but slows later and often terminates at 6PM. The landing is next to LaPointe businesses and close to the museum.

The staff were friendly and even offered folding chairs to my husband and I as we stayed with our daughter in her wheelchair. Wheelchairs, bikes and cars are transported on the lower deck. It was a smooth ride. The loading and unloading seemed to go quickly.

During a visit to Bayfield, we opted to bring our bicycles out to Madeline Island. The staff sold us tickets and instructed us on how to board the boat. We enjoyed the experience and the scenery during our round trip on the ferry. The bike trip around the island was a highlight of our trip.

Very efficient system.
They run three shuttles on the weekend, so we were pleasantly surprised that there was a 9:30am shuttle and we didn't wait in line.
We did ferry over our car and worked very smoothly.
