Amazing view of a tea factory in action, on a small scale . Each and every step was explained very nicely by the tea factory officials . I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process.
This was followed by tea sampling , which was done very professionally.
A must visit place , worth the effort.

Really enjoyable experience, called in on journey from Kandy to Colombo. Really nice tour of a smaller scale tea factory, process was described really well & then opportunity to taste some of the teas & make purchase. Didn’t feel pressured to buy but tea was very good & i thought reasonably priced & will be a lovely treat when back in England!

The Embilmeegama Tea Factory is very close to Kandy (on the Kandy to Colombo Road) so if you want to see a working tea factory but don't have the time to drive or take the train up to the hill country then this is a great opportunity.
Its a small family run operation, where a guide will take you through the processing of the tea leaves into the finished product. at the end of the tour you'll get take to the top floor which has been converted into a tea shop/cafe and given a complimentary cup of tea. The shop has a wide range of the company's teas for sale however if you want you can organise another cuppa, some cake and just relax.

On our way back from the elephant orphanage & the millennium elephant, our driver Ash asked if we wanted to visit this tea factory and have a look around and purchase some tea. As we were pretty knackered and well"Elephanted " out, this didn't sound too promising until he mentioned there's free tea to drink.! After that you couldn't hold me back, upon entering we were greeted by a friendly young woman who escorted us around showing how everything is made, blended, and packaged which to be honest was pretty interesting as I didn't realise there were so many blends and flavours to be had. I also did feel slightly guilty at being in amongst the workers but, they didn't seem to mind at all, moving on the young girl then took us upstairs via the lift and the vast array of packaged teas to be purchased, I'm told this is quite a small family run business and I'd love to see a bigger one which I believe are all around here.
Now, for the tea sampling and at this point I had the best fresh tea I've ever tasted, so good I kept asking for more much to my drivers obvious amusement. We also had some cake which was pretty good too, this was a really good way to wind down, I actually emptied the pot, even my wife enjoyed this tea and she's a coffee drinker...! The selection of packaged tea was really good and I purchased a special offer of 4 boxes of black tea, which didn't break the bank either. I would certainly recommend a visit here and the good thing is there is no pressure to buy, and we left later, completely refreshed and ready for our return to Kandy which is only a few miles away..

On the road to Kandy, we stopped at this lovely tea factory. It was very interesting. The guide greets you at the door and shows you through each step of the tea making process side by side with the workers. The end of the tour leads you to a complimentary pot of tea and to the small gift shop. All the teas are reasonably priced and well packaged for gift giving. We never felt pressured to buy anything and the overall experience was very good.

Having been to a tea factory in Kerala, the tour of this factory was quick and basic by comparison, but still gave insight into the tea making process for those who haven't heard before. They have an excellent tea sampling room and the chocolate cake was very good. All sorts of top quality tea for sale, some of it appears very expensive but still less than the same in UK

The young lady who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable about the tea production. She took us from station to station explaining who was doing what and also showing all different machines used in selection, crushing, sieving etc etc. We learned a lot by shooting all sorts of questions.
There was also a large variety of teas to select from at the showroom. We also got to taste some teas. And needless to say that at the end we gave them a lot of business!

Able to taste the different teas and were explained to us. The staff were not pushy unlike Store-field tea factory. The price of tea was also very reasonable. Not a tourist trap. Would definitely recommend

On 151, Colombo Road, in Pilimathalawa, you'll discover the interesting "Embilmeegama Tea Factory". A typical Sri Lankan tea factory, very well organized, with a guided tour of its premises, that shows the different stages in tea production. After visiting the factory, you'll be invited to a tea degustation served by the factory's guide herself. As a final step, you'll will end at a lovely tea shop, where their exquisite teas are on sale at very reasonable prices. A good opportunity to buy those small gifts that we have always to bring home. Important to remark that at any moment we felt they were putting any kind of pressure on us to buy their products. Besides that, after a tiring car trip from Colombo to Kandy or Negombo, stopping at Embilmeegama may signify a lovely time to get out of the car, stretch your body, go to the toilets (very clean) and have some tea. It was, indeed, a refreshing pause on our way to the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. Enjoy!
