Now in its 61st year of operation, Wade House historic site is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Set upon 240 rolling acres near the northern reaches of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, the site celebrates the world of plank road stagecoach travel, horse-drawn transportation, and mid-19th-century settlement and town building. The new Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum offers a rich array of exhibits providing orientation to the site and its themes. The wonder of Wisconsin's largest collection of carriages and wagons awaits each visitor to the site in the new, state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot carriage museum. A visit to the site's historic area includes a guided tour of the 27-room stagecoach hotel built in 1850 and active demonstrations by costumed staff in the Dockstader Blacksmith Shop and Herrling Sawmill, which features an up-and-down saw powered by the Mullet River. Visitors are transported to and from the historic area via horse-drawn wagon, or they may enjoy a scenic boardwalk and walking trail. The Visitor Center includes a Gift Store and the Butternut Cafe, which offers lunch to museum visitors or travelers from 11 am - 2 pm daily.

We traveled the hour and a half from Madison to attend one of their events - dog sledding. First the dog sledding event: We thoroughly enjoyed it! Would do it again if there was snow. We had to ride in a go kart instead of a sleigh b/c there was no snow. Still a very cool experience. Second the Wade... More

We made a family visit to the Wade House and Jung Carriage museum recently. It was extra special due to the Christmas Weekend activities and a beautiful 2" topping of snow provided by mother nature. The museum is very well done. You get a good overview of the carriage making industry in the state and especially the local area. There... More

This site is a wonderful place for a "travel back in time" experience. The reenactment staff is so knowledgeable and willing to share their excitement for this place. We happened to stop at the site on a weekend when they were having a fall event. The new building where you enter is amazing, with enough interactive stuff to keep kids... More

Wade House reminded us of Old World Wisconsin but on a smaller scale. The stagecoach museum is well designed and has great exhibits. The tour guide at the house/inn was friendly and knowledgeable. Note that there are three stories to this building, and you'll need to use stairs to get to the upper floors. The blacksmith and the sawyer gave... More

Enjoyed our visit yesterday! Fran gave an excellent tour through the Wade House. Fun wagon ride to site. Interesting blacksmith and sawmill staff to answer questions. The carriage Museum is very nice. Grounds are beautiful. Well worth our stop off the highway!

This is a neat historic place to visit. You will see how they cut would for building, a blacksmith, a carriage museum and much more. You can also hitch a ride on a horse buggy. Really neat to see how people lived back in the 1800's.

Wade House includes an extremely interesting carriage museum, a house and inn from the mid 1800s, a blacksmith shop, and a stream-driven sawmill. all excellent. A horse-drawn wagon takes you from the visitor center to the other end of the site. All ages enjoyed each of the experiences. Not a one was bored. Docents, including the wagon driver, were interesting... More

Great place to visit! This is such a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Kids and adults will enjoy walking the trail, riding in the horse-drawn wagon and interacting with the "townsfolk" that inhabit the site. There is a carriage museum at the visitors center that is worth the trip alone, don't miss it.

We loved this. We had 2 small children in a stroller. There is a beautifully done carriage museum downstairs with over 70 carriages. Then you take a ride on a horse drawn wagon. There was no room for stroller, and they were so accommodating. One of the staff drove our stroller over in a golf cart and ferried us back... More

The Wade House is a Wisconsin State Historical Site located roughly halfway between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan. It's a former stage coach stop restored to roughly the way it was in 1860 when travelers would spend the night there, stage coaches would change horses, etc. There is also a blacksmith shop and saw mill. A few years ago the... More
