- Kimberly CChicago, Illinois58 contributionsFantastic for the Creative PersonThere are at least four different buildings here, offering the artistic or crafty person the materials, space and guidance to do mosaics, fused glass, ceramics (painting already molded and fired greenware), painting on canvas, wood or metal, stamped jewelry, etc. You pick an item to do that has a set price, and then the staff guides you how make the item, supplying the tools and materials. You can come back on subsequent days to complete your project, or if doing ceramics or fused glass, come back to pick up your item after it has been fired in the kiln and cooled. Why isn't something like this near the Chicago burbs? So cool! You can enjoy trying so many things without investing in all the expensive equipment necessary to do so!Visited October 2021Written October 8, 2021
- Julie WHartford, Wisconsin210 contributionsFun for allFriendly and fun staff. Fairly reasonable prices. 4 year old painted at wood fairy castle plaque, my husband did a pineapple and I did a wine glass and it was around $35 total. I would’ve liked to do a mosaic or glass project, looked like they has a lot to offer in those areas too, but kiddo has a fairly short attention span! They did offer drinks to purchase and a patio area with lawn games. Great for a rainy day and to bring home a souvenir of your trip.Visited June 2021Traveled with familyWritten June 26, 2021
- LittlePaintUrbandale, Iowa690 contributionsMy favorite place in Door County!I love this place. I went several hours every morning for 4 days. I did wander through all of the studios and considered several, but ended up spending all of my time in the glass studio. The gal working there was very helpful with techniques and how to information. There was no pressure to hurry and finish a project... It was relaxing to be able to play with the glass and change ideas as I went until I had exactly the pieces I wanted. It's a long drive to get there, but I can't wait to go back next spring with a girlfriend and spend more time. Ohh.... It wasn't terribly crowded when I was there, so I had no problems parking my 25' RV. If you get there, and there's no room to park a camper, you might go inside and ask about alternatives at the check in stationVisited October 2020Traveled soloWritten November 13, 2020

This is the first review I’ve ever written because I usually don’t let staff experiences affect me but this was just intolerable. Arrived and paid admission then went to the “workshop” to make a stamped jewelry project. There where many other guests making projects but no employees to be found anywhere. We picked out stamps for a make a stamped ring project then an employee, Natalie, came in and yelled at us that we could not do this without her. I understand why they would want staff to supervise these projects, but then maybe they should have staff available in each building. She gave us a 20 minute lecture stating that this project would be too difficult for us to complete. I have done several stamped jewelry projects before so that is extreamly rude to assume it’s “too advanced” of a project, making many rude side comments. We decided to leave and not complete a project after our long lecture of not being good enough for this. We went to the checkout to pay for our “started” project (which had not even been stamped once) and the lady was just as rude. She made a ton of excuses as to why Natalie was so rude and didn’t even let us tell her what happened. I will never return and I advise everyone else to stay away until they hire decent staff.

We have been to Door County 5-6 times now and each time we try to find something different to do.
So glad that we finally checked Hands On out. What an amazing place. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon around 3 so we had to choose a project rather quickly since they close at 5 and you have to start the project by 3:30 so that you can complete it.
My 7 year old daughter loves art and has been begging us to come here. Couldn't have made a better decision. The location is easy to find and provides so many different craft items.
The staff is really helpful when trying to decide what to do and also during the process of getting extra paint and supplies. My parents met up with us here and also enjoyed relaxing on the grounds and reading a book while there was a music group playing on the balcony.
We loved the place so much that we decided to make some more projects when we came to pick up our finished projects the next day.
Great place to make a craft for yourself or as a gift for someone else. Our kids had a great time and this kept them really busy the whole time. Even our 8 month old loved it, with the music and all the projects to look at.

So awesome we had to come back!
We came here our last time in Door and it was a must-do for this trip as well. We did even more projects this time, including stained glass and metalwork (jewerly.)
Projects are well scaled for all ages, including younger children.
Yes, it can be pricey, but it is fun and you get something special each time.

This was my favorite find this year! Prices are pretty decent considering it is a tourist hot spot and the kids and adults loved being able to choose a project and do together. We did both mosaic and ceramics and had a blast. Staff is very friendly and helpful. My son already asked if we can go back next time in door county.

We have nothing but great things to say starting from when we walked in the door to leaving. The staff was friendly and encouraging and there were so many project ideas to choose from! My husband and I chose to paint since we could take them the same day and we loved the low stress environment and the guidance from the person working. We even purchased some fused glass when we left. Great experience!

I went with family to Hands On Art but I’m a novice when it comes to art. My family had gone there once the year before and loved it.
The staff was very welcoming! They patiently explained all the art options. Including many detailed questions from us after we made our art selection.
My spouse and I each chose to glaze a ceramic piece. We took our time glazing — no problem.
The best part was coming back the next day — after it was kilned— to pick up our art. Again, the staff was friendly and happy for us for our completed pieces.
We will definitely go back here on our annual trip to Door County.

Loved my experience here! I was looking for some activities to do on my trip to Door County in the off season and Hands On was exactly what I was looking for. They are only open Friday-Sunday in the off season, which I didn’t realize right away. But I’m so glad we made the stop there on the last day of the trip.
There are so many options of projects to try and they guide you through them in a nice way. You’re greeted right away and they give you a run down of how it all works. But then they give you time to explore and figure out what you want to do.
Once we had landed on doing the mosaics, the staff in that area were great at getting us started and checked in on how we were doing multiple times.
I had such a great time and definitely want to come back to try out a different project!

We spent an afternoon here while visiting Door County. We had been here before but wanted to try something different. While looking around at various types of projects our attention was captured by glazing of pottery. This was a lot of fun. The site staff were both encouraging and helpful. The end result may not have been museum quality but we had fun and learned about a new art process that we both enjoyed.

I wanted to really love this place because I love the idea of barns filled with all these different art projects people could do, but with 0 guidance it felt limiting. It was an entirely "wing it" and see how things turn out from the time you walked in. We eventually completed a project but it was out of sheer will and stubbornness to do so than any guidance or explanation of how. I understand the place maybe understaffed due to the pandemic but they should have had at least a rotations of employees checking on customers.

Came to Door County for a long weekend and spent an afternoon making art at Hands On Art Studio. We have two kids, 12 and 14. Both enjoyed themselves. Our daughter painted and our son made a mosaic. It’s a DIY place so they let you take a look around and then when you pick what you want to do they give you some basic instructions and then let you work. It was a great time and we would definitely come back.

Is there a pottery wheel available to throw pots?

I did not see a pottery wheel. I know you could go upstairs and paint pottery but I did not see one or hear about one.

I've noticed a couple different description variations about Friday Adult Nights. Are food and drink provided or must they be brought in by guests?

The review by Andrea C was very accurate. Just a couple of comments...
*No, they have not changed ownership.
*And the the older woman you talked about, she is actually the owner Karon Ohm.
*Lastly, the unprofessional way the owners treat their employees is even more alarming than the unprofessional manner that the owner treated the customers, described in this review & numerous other reviews I have read recently.
Its really too bad that the owners have set such a poor standard for their business. The concept of this creative studio space has so much potential to be wonderful, but it will never be good with such profit-focused & unprofessional owners.

Hello! The older women that Andrea C was referring to is a former employee who did not fit with the culture of Hands On. We spoke to the employee and other staff members regarding the review back in May.
As far as profits, we we are mindful of keeping our business viable and that's why we will soon be celebrating 19 years.

How much are your classes?
Rosemary D
Joliet, IL67 contributions
This is definitely a Hands-On place. The projects available range from novice to experienced and the prices range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful like a classroom. I went for the first time this past May 2016 and went to the Friday adult night. I paid $7 entry fee and my particular project average to $20 per project. There were no classes available at the time that I went. Their prices are extremely reasonable and you can practically make whatever you want within the supplies that they have and they give you all the help you need. If interested in any specific classes I would just contact the website or call them.
