We biked the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and loved it! It's mostly flat with a slight incline up to each tunnel (but not bad!) The trail is beautiful with lots of trees and sand cranes! But the tunnels were the best part...dark, cool, and drippy! Need headlights or bike lights! The longest tunnel was 3/4 mile long! You'll love it!

We decided to bike part of this trail, just to see the tunnels. A few thoughts as I biked that day. 1. There are long, slow climbs to each tunnel. I didn't actually measure, but the longest climb was probably 3-4 miles. Yes, very gradual, but it is climbing. On the flip side, the ride away from each of the... More

I love this trail, but just went back for the first time in 10 years and was surprised at how exhausting it was to go uphill to each tunnel. It was tougher than I remembered (or just got old and out of shape). :)

Stopped by the Sparta Elroy Trail at Tunnel #3 on way to northern wisconsin Saturday 6/18. Go north out of Norwalk on Hwy 71. You are looking for Kenya Avenue. It is like 2 - 3 miles out of town and you come down a hill and there isn't a very large sign, but there is one posted along the... More

My husband and I had a few hours at the end of a weekend camping trip, so we decided to ride the trail starting at Elroy. We bought a trail pass from the shop in Elroy and also got some information from the friendly woman working there. It was very hot (90s) the day we rode, so we only made... More

We traveled this trail from Sparta to Elroy. It was a great ride. The trail was well maintained and the three tunnels added an exciting experience, especially tunnel 3, which is the longest of the three. The small towns along the route provided nice stops for breaks, food/drinks, and rest rooms. We especially enjoyed the depots in Sparta and Kendall,... More

We biked the entire 32 mile trail today. Lots of riders throughout the day. The three tunnels, which you must walk through, are reminders of the railroad the preceded the trail. The trail becomes a gradual upgrade to each tunnel. Then you get a good downgrade as you leave each tunnel. You can rest and refresh in the towns of... More

The tunnels on this ride are fantastic. Bring a light for the 3/4 mile long tunnel, because it is dark and wet. Know you are heading up hill from Sparta to Elroy, but felt like uphill coming back too. Was a beautiful ride.

I have been on most of the trail between Sparta and Elroy. Very nice trail to run or walk or ride bikes on. If you are on the trail you have to go see the tunnels.

The tunnels were cool in two ways—they were eerily breathtaking, and they were significantly colder inside than out. It was like A/C on a hot summer day. If you bike the trails, you're supposed to walk your bicycle through the tunnels. I suggest bringing a flashlight and carrying an extra sweatshirt or jacket. Oh, and you'll definitely get wet. The...
