Of the two state parks in Door County, Newport is smaller and is more for hiking. Great if you like to walk amongst the trees. The $11.00 is good to enter both parks, Newport and Peninsula if done in the same day. If you can only do one, Peninsula is bigger, has a lighthouse which can be toured and the Eagle tower to climb via stairs or ramp for a outlook of the water and islands. There are trails and camping available.
Newport is noted for the dark sky and is open until 11pm you can bring telescopes and they give you suggestions on where to find the best spot for viewing.

On a clear night, this park offers a beautiful and hard to find dark sky filled with glittering stars. Jupiter rising in the east shines on the waters of Lake Michigan and the Northern Lights pulse in greens and reds above. During the day, enjoy a gorgeous hiking experience.

There are many hiking options in such a beautiful environment. Some of the options include hiking hear the water and enjoying the beautiful lake view. This is a "Dark Sky" Park and has the best views of the stars, and constellations around.
We hike at this park every time we visit Door County because it isn't very crowded and is serene and enjoyable. This is truly a well hidden Gem.

After multiple trips to Door County finally made it to the northern portion of DC and have to say, it's completely different! The whole vibe and feel is more quaint and natural. So if that's your thing forget about Fish Creek and Peninsula State Park (it's gotten much more crowded and touristy) and head North to Ellison Bay and Newport the S.P. is quiet, unspoiled, and just beautiful. Highly recommend this off the beaten path place for some good hiking, time to relax by the bay, and just a whole lot of nature as it was meant to be.
Biggest regret is not visiting previously and not backpacking here. While it's not for everyone since spots are all a decent hike-in but honestly from what we saw, we would easily traded the in-town accommodations for couple nights of roughing it. So it's now on the list and we shall be back!

The hiking at this park is great, just as it is in all the state parks in Door County. Having discovered this is now a dark sky park, however, we decided to visit the park at night on this trip. I have been searching for an adjective to describe the experience, and I finally decided on extraordinary. We arrived there around sunset, so it wasn't really dark yet, and we could see maybe just three stars. As the night went on, though, and it continued to get darker, more stars appeared until the sky was almost completely full. It truly was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend, especially since it is a rare opportunity. Check the park's website for all the information you need (including proper etiquette). I would suggest you follow the park's recommendation that you scope out the park in the light first, so you know where you need to go when you get there.

We only came through to see a little and find a place to stop and eat. It’s $11 to just enter even knowing we were just going to be a short while. There seems to be a bunch of hikes that vary in length and difficulty. Would love to have taken one or 2 but it wasn’t possible on this trip. We enjoyed the beach area for a short time.

Apart from the Rock Island State Park, which is on the island, Newport is the quietest and most pleasant of all parks. While there are no outstanding features there like at Devil's Lake or Interstate, the views of Lake Michigan well compensate for that. Park includes two State Natural Areas - Europe Bay Woods SNA and Newport Conifer-Hardwoods SNA. Newport State Park is designated a Wilderness Area - for a reason too.

We figured out this park is rated as a International Dark Sky Park and made it our destination around dusk. The water, white rocks, clear water and star gazing was an amazing experience. Must add this to your list of activities. I was not "experienced" in this kind of activity, but you may want to research before you attend.

During our trip to Door County we hiked at Peninsula State Park, Cave Point County Park, Whitefish State Park, and Newport State Park. This was our favorite. We parked in parking lot three and took Fern trail to Lynd Trail. There are a few places where it was not super clear which way to follow the trail but we figured it out. It was a beautiful hike

Went here to star gaze. It is out of the way, quiet and isolated, but we felt safe. There were numerous other groups of people doing the same. It has a small sandy beach and shoreline. Take plenty of bug pray. Get there before dark so you can see your way around there are no lights. Also, pit toilets without lights so take a few flashlights.

No, I don't remember any showers with their walk - in campsites.

Which number campsite is the best for viewing the night sky? Thanks!

All the campsites have many trees. The sites near Lake Michigan usually have view of about the Eastern half of the sky. Also, they will have a short walk (usually 200 feet or less) to get to the beach where you will have a clear view of about 70% or more of the sky. The sites nearest Lake Michigan are numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 16. I think the best spot for viewing is at the beach end of the paved trail from the South of Parking Lot #3. There is a large grassy area on the West of the beach there, so you get a clear view of about 80% of the sky. The distant trees on the West block part of the view. Also, you walk somewhat downhill to get to the shore. So, when looking back toward the West, those trees appear higher as they are on higher ground.
You will still see more of the night sky from the beach there than from any other part of the park. Cover a flashlight with some red cellophane, so you can see your way around without much decreasing of your night vision. It takes about 20 to 40 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark, but if you see a white flashlight or car headlight - you may have to wait another 20-40 minutes or more for your night vision to recover.
Hey there, how long was the walk from your vehicle to the beach? Do you pass the campsites on the way there? I'm looking to camp and enjoy a night of stargazing with my large telescope there. and wondering what the terrain is like as my telescope is a bit heavy. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. This is the first I've seen your question. From parking lot #3, there is a paved path (fairly smooth and level) of about a quarter-mile to the beach. You will probably need a red flashlight to find your way. It also helps to go in the daytime (beforehand) to see the path and decide where you want to set up.

Are any of the parking lots open all night? I read there is one for astronomers .

I concur with the answer above. We have been to Newport 6 times since we moved to Door County last summer. Some of the folks viewing in the astronomy area actually had tents pitched nearby and we assume were camping overnight. The website states park hours as 7am-11pm, but the gate was never closed/locked. We have been there as late as midnight so far, and the gates were never closed. In the summer, I believe they have a formal camping section off another lot for campers with hook-ups, but the sites in the astronomy area are more rustic, with a park bathroom nearby. We attended some of the outdoor theatre presentations put on by UW Madison with films and lectures, followed by use of some of the telescopes that were set-up there. Here is the local Door Peninsula Astronomical Society (DPAS) that we belong to that has some events out there this year. Much of their updates are over on their Facebook page.
When is the best time of year to see if the Northern lights from Ellison Bay
Robert W
Park Ridge, IL3,121 contributions
You need 1. clear sky (no or few clouds) 2. dark sky (no or few streetlights or parking lot lights) So, although it might be possible to see the Northern lights from the porch of your hotel in Ellison Bay, you will have a better chance from Newport State park which is classified as one of the best area for dark sky. 3. solar activity especially with sunspots (see web: aurora-hunter) for latest 3 days of activity. 4. Jan to March give best chances but clear winter skies are usually very cold. It will feel like your feet are freezing to the ground. So wear multiple heavy socks, layered sweaters, parka, gloves and mittens and by the Lake Michigan beach you will feel how cold the wind chill is. Most new cell phone cameras (latest three years) are so good that they can record impressive pictures of aurora.
You may need a red flashlight to find your way from parking lot number 3 at Newport to the paved path that leads to the beach.

Hello,
My name is Patrick, my girlfriend and I are planning on a couple of quick camping trips up here. I'm using this as a way to test some backpacking supplies i've been gathering.
With these sites being next to Lake Michigan I was curious if you could use the lake as a drinking source. Obviously not looking to just drink straight from the Lake; however, I recently purchased a Platypus Gravity Filter system and was hoping to test it. Is Lake Michigan water suitable to be drank after running through a filter such as that? The filter size is .02 microns, which is smaller than the Cryptosporidium bacteria.
Thanks!
