Depending on when you visit, the only way to REALLY see the island via land is with a car or truck! Worth a ferry visit, for sure. During summer months, taking a bike will certainly give you a flavor of what Madeline Island has to...More

Take a ferry over to this awesome"hidden" treasure. We went here on vacation last year and can't wait to go again. Kayaking, scooter rentals, or hit up Tom's Burn down Cafe.

"seeing" the islands? (1 Reply)
We are staying in Bayfield a night then heading to Madeline Island for a day. What about the other of the Apostle Islands? Would you recommend renting a kayak and can you realistically kayak and see the other islands? Is there anything on these islands? What about the national seashore? Any help would be appreciated.

Kayaking for beginners (5 Replies)
My wife and I have never kayaked (do canoe occasionally, but on calm Iowa lakes) and I'm wondering how doable the Apostle Islands kayaking is. Specifically, I thought kayaking through the Big Bay area on Madeline Island to see the sea caves sounded neat, but also a little scary being essentially out in Lake Superior. So my questions are: Can beginners kayak in Big Bay without being terrified? If not, is the Big Bay lagoon an acceptable substitute, sea caves and natural beauty-wise? Are...More

Big Bay is a beautiful place to kayak, with a very nice rocky shoreline that isn't to be missed. That being said, whever doing open water kayaking you need a certain skill set. If you are novice kayakers, you will want to be select a calm day to make your trip. For weather information, you can contact the Big Bay State Park Staff.

We are planning a road trip to Wi second week of Aug (Circle Tour...Bayfield, Apostle island and Madeline Island). never been to this area before we normally do not make reservations for accommodations. We enjoy the fun of finding a place to stay. Wondering if it will be a difficult task to do this time of year.

I did a tentative search in the area as we are wanting to make another pilgrimage to Ashland the 2nd week of August. There are very few rooms available so I guess I would say to look yourself and make your own decision as to whether you want to make reservations or take your chances.
