Really just stopped for bathroom break and to get our NP stamp, but ended up going out to Sandstone Falls because the ranger talked us into it & we were glad we did. He knew a lots about the area & great suggestions for lunch.

Rangers were a delight to talk to. Garden is beautiful

Boardwalk out to Sandstone Falls was under reconstruction/refurbishment, so we weren't able to see the falls. We would not have had time anyway because we spent so much time in the visitor center.
The movie and floor mosaic of the New River watershed were worth the visit.
... but I am partial to national parks.

Great staff and center, worth the top for certain

This visitor center has everything you could want in an NPS center. The rangers were extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The exhibits were beautifully done. The floor is a work of art depicting the entire New River watershed.

Much more than NPS passport stamps

They have a 12 minute movie and exhibits on the history and culture of the area, wildlife exhibits, and information to help protect and promote our natural resources. Even the architecture of the building is interesting.

Friendly greeting as we walked in the door. Watched a 13 minute informative movie on the water shed. Beautiful map of the watershed in the flooring. As we left 2 young girls were getting their Jr Ranger badges. Highly recommend the stop.

A wonderful little gem...a bit off the track...but well worth the stop!

This was one of those fabulous little gems, on the way to somewhere else ... however, I highly recommend it, IF you got time while headed out west, by way of 64 West, THIS would be one of those places would be well worth the stop.

We were simply looking for the nearest rest stop, when we saw signs to the Visitors Center. Expecting a simple stop, to my surprise, was this very wonderfully located, The Sandstone Visitors' Center, on the New River Gorge, National River.

It features a great amount of history about the WV area and the river and it is very strategically presented in a very welcoming center environment, good for both young and old. Then, they have a lovely little gift shop, with an array of books, again, about West Virginia and the surrounding area and its history... including also featuring works by local artists. Outside, the day of our visit, is a select grouping of the local environment and its flora, an open garden, and sandstone exhibit, etc.

With time, visit the area, so you can walk to the river, look over from heavenly scenic views! (all reasons, I will go back, with a few hours to spare, next time)

The Best however are the Park Rangers! Friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and they just make you feel like you are good friends!

Hard to find but worth it

This location was hard to find but sure glad we did. It is a small but informative visitor center, full of information BUT not by the bridge. It is very community oriented. It was build on the site of a former high school. Kids did the Junior Ranger booklet.

Out of the way but very interesting

This is a small, out of the way visitor center with a short film that discusses the history of the New River and the importance of keeping river basins clean. Nicely constructed of local materials and energy efficient, it has a neat map of the New River basin on the floor in various colors of stone. A very friendly and helpful staff. Very convenient to the interstate.
