This was one of the most interesting hikes I’ve ever done. Beautiful landscape and incredible abandoned structures and remnants of the coal mining operation formerly there. There is great signage from the NPS explaining what exactly you are looking at. We were in a rush and did it in about a hour and 15 minutes, but I would strongly recommend planning on at least two hours to do it properly.

We knew there was a hike & 820+ steps involved. Apparently we’re more out of shape than we thought (we did CamelBack in AZ a few years ago, it was not this tough) or the result just didn’t live up to the expectation. The only reason we can see to do this one is to be able to say you did it.

There are two different ways to do this trail. Please know ahead of time which trail you are exploring. We left from the parking lot and hiked down the mountain. We did not take the wide path by the waterfall. My kids are all teens and I was thankful they were not young. I could not have carried them. I would have been a nervous wreck. The trail down the mountain has loose rocks and drop offs. It wasn’t easy. After the mountain climb down to the middle you have the option to then depart down the over 800 stairs. Halfway down I realized it was a little much. Nowhere to stop except on the actual staircase. I’m in fairly good shape. Not overweight. Even my teens complained they were done! This is not like others have described as a “abandoned town”. There is a fence around an old building. History says it was once a community but that time is long ago. Make sure you are in good physical shape as I stopped many times on the way back up. We are glad we have the memory but it’s a once only.

Everything you have read is true: there are a lot of steps. The problem is the ruins at the bottom block the view of the river and railroad and aren’t worth the effort. There are so many pretty trails in the area. The top section of this trial is very pretty. When I go back I’ll probably only hike the top portion, down to the top of the steps and back up, then take the connector loop to Long Point at the other side of the trailhead. That would be a much pretty walk, as the top of this trail and long point are beautiful. I just wasn’t a fan of the view at the bottom of the >800 steps (and then having to go back up).

This hike was well worth the effort. My wife and I started the trail from the Kaymore Top parking lot. Being a new National Park unfortunately there are very few trail markers at junctions on the trail. There was a newly cleaned up trail about halfway down from the parking lot that we took by mistake rather than going to the right and down to the Kaymore Miners Trail. We ended up hiking along a wall of rocks for about 30 minutes and luckily ran into some rock climbers who were nice enough to describe how to get back to the parking lot. We were way off but it was a nice hike with great rock formations and a beautiful waterfall. I have no idea what trail we took by mistake but there is an orange colored stretcher tied to a tree near a trail that heads up the mountain that will take you back to the parking lot. After a short rest we restarted our hike back to to the Kaymore Mine. I'm glad it was close to Father's Day or else my wife would have been all over me. Great day of hiking.

The trail is full of steep switchbacks and a monster rock section that honestly frightened me to death the first time I saw it! The buildings at the half level are cool.the 821steps to the bottom area killer...but the ruins at the bottom are awesome to see!!!!

This trail is strenuous, but worth it. The scenery is amazing, and there are many remnants of the mine to see. Just be prepared. The first mile is steep, rocky switchbacks to the top section of the mining operation. Afterwards, its 800+ stairs to the bottom section. Take lots of water and several breaks. We went really slow, and it took us 2+ hours to see both sections. We did not go further down the river to see the coke ovens though.

Honestly, this was the best hike of my life all for the sake of a man we met fifty feet down the trail. He described the trek as “not worth it” for the “dilapidated buildings” at the bottom. He had some mud on him and a leaf on the back of his head as if he’d taken a tumble. Our expectations were so low after that that we were pleasantly surprised and the 827 some stairs were worth it. Leaf man, if you’re reading this, I hope you’re doing ok. <3

It is a great trail for a workout before beer and pizza at Pies and Pints! Start near the top, hit those stairs and then cross the tracks down to the river and watch some rafts go by. Then, head back up to your vehicle and be proud of yourself!

This trail is short but challenging. It had ice on some parts, but my kids like it. A lot of stairs, but it is advertised that way. I wish you could explore the mining area more, but it is old and falling down.
