If you're traveling to West Virginia, then you must see this museum to get an overview of the coal mining industry. A retired coalminer named Leroy was our guide in the mine. He was fabulous, answered questions and engaged the youngest visitors as well. After...More

The Exhibition coal mine has been well maintained and there are many things to see outside of the mine. The actual ride into the heart of the mine might be scary for young children. Take a light sweater because it is always around 50 degrees...More

Loved the Coal mine tour. Our tour guide had actually worked the mines for 25 years. Very informative .I couldn't believe how the miners had to endure this type of work in the early 1900,s .

This place is a wonderful glimpse into the history and life of coal mining. We had a great underground tour (on a cart that brings you in) and the gentleman (a former miner) was very knowledgeable. The docents in the outbuildings were also friendly and...More

Some of the friendliest people, we have met this trip. With a first class presentation, very well done. This is a great family stop.

I enjoyed touring the coal camp buildings and there was a guide at each one to offer information and answer questions. There is a school house, church, miners family home, a one room home for a single man and the superintendents home. Each building was...More

You can take a tour of the historic Phillips-Sprague coal mine that opened around 1889 (check online for their seasonal hours). We decided to pass on that because I was didn't like the idea of being underground and we wanted to have time to see...More

I visited for the Rocket Boys Festival 2016. It was fantastic. On a much smaller scale than Williamsburg VA but a piece of history that fewer people know about. The mine tour and the guide, Roger, was really interesting. My hat is off to all...More

The mine tour was very interesting. It took about 30 minutes. Our guide was very nice & friendly. The exhibit was very nice & educational. Glad we made it one of our stops while on vacation.

The mine tour was very interesting! Although it's not a good depiction of modern mining it does allow for one to have an understanding of the history of coal mining ! We had a fantastic tour guide, quite a comedian!

You can just go. On a busy holiday weekend you might have to wait 30 minutes for the underground tour, but most times there is no wait. I'd get there at least 1 hour prior to closing if you want the tour.
