Beautiful nature refuge ... no pets allowed! We saw a ton of birds, deer, nutria...and beautiful wild flowers. There are a couple of different paths, one leading up to the dike so you can walk along the river. Very peaceful and serene place to walk. There are occasional mountain lion sightings so probably best to walk with a friend, not alone.

This little 1050 acre refuge is a gem at the gateway to the Columbia gorge. This has become my go-to place in the Portland area for viewing and photographing wildlife: Eagles, Herons, Harriers along with dozens of other species abound here. The scenery alone is fantastic with Mount Hood dominating on a clear day. Please remember, this is a wildlife refuge and not a recreational park so there a lot of restrictions: No dogs, horses, jogging, biking, and drone flying. Thanks.

After reconstruction project 2022:
Congratulations on removing the very beautiful, 3/4 mile former entry thus eliminating one of the best parts of the refuge. You actually took away the main reason we used to regularly visit. What a bureaucratic blunder; did you even consult with the public?. You redesigned the grounds, with your wide gravel paths and distant trees, and now have kept the walking public as far from the actual nature as possible…bravo. Pure idiocy!

Although this certainly isn't my favorite place in the area is pretty good for bird watching. The trail is flat and easy to navigate.
If you're looking for breathtaking views this isn't the place. If you just need a quick nature fix this will likely hold you over.

Nice trail through grasslands and wetland. We saw herons, egrets, ospreys, turtles, Pacific frogs and nutria. On our way back we met a trail volunteer who told us that they were in the process of removing the dikes and letting the wetlands expand to their original form. that would be great! He thought that this place would be even better in a few years. We look forward to that

Took a 2+ mile hike thru the park this afternoon. Truly delightful. Paths were dust-free after the rains 2 days prior. Vistas were incredible. Spotted a few water fowl, a 'nutria' which sort of looks like a river otter but is, in fact, a not-so-beloved 'pest' - a river loving rat. Quite the swimmer but not so friendly to the natives of this area. Also spotted lots of dozing turtles. It was a fun excursion populated by a few other curious families, couples and kids. A delightful place any nature lover would enjoy.

We were quite surprised that dogs were not allowed on the Steigerwald Lake Trail so we found the Cape Horn Trailhead instead. Its a really nice trail and we all got some much needed exercise. The trail is located at Salmon Creek Rd and the Park and Ride parking lot. There are bathrooms there too. We took a picnic lunch and enjoyed the day! !

Located at the mouth of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, this wildlife refuge is a great place to walk. Parking lot and restroom is just off Highway 14. The trail leads down to the
Columbia River, and wildlife of many varieties abounds throughout the refuge. Take water, and
perhaps a picnic lunch, and binoculars to enjoy flora and fauna throughout your walk. Easy
trail with a great view of snow-capped Mt. Hood. The area is recovering nicely from last year's
wildfire.
