This is a surprise - we went during Christmas and they had model trains running of all sizes AND we rode on a real train in a caboose AND they had hands-on wooden play sets for young folks AND they had food AND they had Santa. The model trains that were on display and running are overwhelmingly entertaining. I have no idea how 2 hours elapsed. I wish I had thought to take more photos, I was too busy having fun. This is a worthwhile destination and it stands on it own, it is worth going to specifically, travel to this town just to see this? Yes! This review will fade into oblivion as other, newer, reviews take it's place, but since you're here why don't you add a nice rating if you have some nice words to say (and remember what your Mom always said, "If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything"). Great to see businesses thrive in the Yakima area. Let's support Things To Do here just by being Yakima-friendly.

While Toppenish is no longer a stop on the BNSF railway, the long freight trains still pull through at full speed and the station house is now a railway museum. Inside the building the 1930's ticket station and REA freight office is preserved in time, and upstairs is am extensive model railroad. The rail yard houses many restored and unrestored examples of passenger cars, freight cars, tankers, diesel locomotives, steam locomotives and cabooses. You are free to walk the yard as much as you wish and climb into some of these trains of yesteryear. This is a train-lovers' delight especially when the 80-car BNSF trains come blaring though.

What a fantastic little Railroad Museum! outside are several steam locomotives being restored and 10's of historic and antique freight and passenger cars including several cars that are nearly 100 years old. you can enter some of the cars and volunteers at the museum are all to happy to answer any question you have. This museum is all about the no longer operating Northern Pacific Railroad that ran up until the 80's. There are all sorts of examples of car interiors, dishes, station memorabilia and signal devices the railroad used to tell train crews what was going on down the line.

If you have and interest in old trims this is a cool stop. Restoration is excellent. Lots of artifacts and great stories. Some train cars in various stages of restoration. Inexpensive and very nice folks. Nice stop.

Last passenger train came by in 1971, in 1974 railroad buffs took over the station ( in need of clean up) and brought this classic BN station back to its early elegance, Tall windows, pale oak frames and doors, large rooms, high ceilings. Run by 12 volunteers, ( including a retired railroad engineer), price is $5 or $3 for children. ONLY open thursday through saturday 10-4. Gift shop has interesting knick-knacks for all ages. Many train cars ( including a dome car ) car be walked around. There is no visiting in the train cars. Check special train days. Perfect for nearby residents. This museum is worth a slight detour from Yakima . Friendly staff present to answer your queries. 509-865-1911
