Celebrating 81 years, Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown...

Celebrating 81 years, Tacoma Art Museum is an anchor in the city’s downtown and a gathering place for connecting people through art via thoughtful exhibitions, exciting events, and enriching programs.

The museum’s collection of more than 4,500 works emphasizes the art and artists of the Northwest and broader western region. Highlights of the collection include:

-the largest retrospective museum collection of glass art by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on continued view;

-the largest collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists;

-key holdings in 19th century European and 20th-century American art;

-one of the finest collections of Japanese woodblock prints on the West Coast; and

-the Haub Family Collection, one of the nation’s premier western American art collections, with approximately 300 works spanning 200 years. The Haub Family Collection is the first major museum collection of western American art in the Pacific Northwestern region.

Named by USA Today as one of the “Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities,” the museum has developed a national reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner, with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. In addition to dynamic exhibitions, nationally touring shows, and historical retrospectives, TAM serves the diverse communities of the region through innovative programming and learning opportunities for all ages, including free community events.

TAM is located in Tacoma’s Museum District, near the Museum of Glass, the Washington State History Museum, Children’s Museum of Tacoma, and historic Union Station.

Wonderful exhibit of Chihuly glass art and an interesting display of Black art and craft art, the western history section was not as impressive. The Chihuly section was top notch, definitely worth a visit. I spent approx. 2 hours at the museum. Parking was abundant.

We loved our visit to the TAM. We ran out of time to see everything and so wish we could come back soon!! Very open and airy, with lots of spaces welcoming you to sit and enjoy the art peacefully. Great exhibits from local artist.

Stopped in with my family on a visit to see our daughter attending college close by. We were very impressed with this museum. Very nice display of art glass as you would expect but also houses a wonderful modern painting selection upstairs as well as a very nice western display downstairs. Also, we were reminded all Pacific Lutheran students have... More

I was impressed and I'm a critical museum-goer. They had an excellent exhibition of Western art, of glass art, of contemporary black women's art, and more. I had no special interest in the themes but the curator managed to make them compelling.

It’s unusual to see this range of art exhibits in an art museum. When we visited there were 3 major themes in the exhibits - western, glass and African American artists. I’m from the midwest where we don’t see a lot of western art. I was really impressed by the variety of styles and quality of work on this theme.... More

It's a really nice museum with a rotation of shows. It's way less pretentious than the SAM, and a little cheaper, as well. Like the SAM, though, it's heavy on Chihuly stuff.

My husband is in school and one assignement was to go to the museum and rate what we thought of it. We loved it they had a showcase which featured art from African Americans. Some of the most powerful art I have ever seen. I think we took a million pictures

It's a small museum. You don't need more than an hour or two to visit. It has some great hands on activities for children.

A group of us visited the Tacoma Art Museum last night on the free night. There was a nice exhibition of western statures and paintings and another room devoted to Native American things. The exhibits were nicely done. We then went to an exhibit of Chihouly Glass, what beautiful things were displayed.
