I wanted to do something special with family and friends during our visit to Orcas Island and found Kruger SEA. I booked a wildlife viewing and sunset sail which turned out to be the perfect choice. We met our captain and first mate, Karl Kruger and his daughter Dagny, at the dock and after some safety and boat essentials we were on our way! It was clear they are both very experienced sailors and very familiar with the area which made it easy to feel comfortable. Ocean Watch had plenty of room for us to spread out, Karl was very accommodating allowing us to bring food and drink since our sail was during the dinner hour and had a wonderful picnic on the fore deck. Our sail took us to beautiful areas of the San Juan Islands with wildlife we never would have seen otherwise like Spieden Island with Mouflon sheep from Corsica, Fallow deer from Europe, and Sika deer from Asia. We also saw a few bald eagles, apparently most were upstream following the salmon at the time we were there. Karl educated us along the way on island history, the currents, the weather, the wildlife, flora and fauna, conservation efforts, and his amazing adventures. The beauty and peacefulness of this area and being on the water was so special. Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed the experience, we all loved it!!! Mission accomplished!!!

Karl is one of those unique individuals who has a passion for exploration with the skills and the experience to safely take you to the most interesting and remote places on this earth. In Ocean Watch, Karl has the perfect sailing vessel to comfortably take you on a memorable adventure. Karl and Elyn are wonderful hosts who deliver fine meals suited to the tastes and needs of their guests.
In the spring of 2022, we spent a week on Ocean Watch in Prince Williams Sound, Alaska, skiing, sailing, exploring ice-filled bays, tidal glaciers and wildlife. It was a magical and memorable week of shared adventure and exploration. In Karl, we had a teammate willing to work with our group to enable our vision.
I have sailed all over the world and Karl is one of those few special mariners capable of taking you on your next adventure.

It's hard to beat a week of my 2 favorite passions skiing & sailing. Karl & Elyn exceeded all expectations! Thank you again for such an amazing experience. You are exteamly skilled sailors, right up the the toe of a calving glacier! Oceans Watch is safe, comfortable & the perfect adventure boat! Elyn, what a wonderful chef! How special that you shared salmon & halibut that you caught! Also chantrell mushrooms and berries you picked. Your meals were 5 star for any restaurant.
I plan to return for another exciting adventure with you!

Great experience. The sailing, the scenery the history. The SV Ocean Watch is a beautiful ship. We did a day cruise around the San Juans, fully under utilizing this boat, but it was an amazing day. Captain Karl and Ellen were great. Felt like friends or relatives hanging out with us showing off their incredible backyard. Highly recommend a charter with these guys!

Fantastic and magical day out on the water...beautiful boat and experience. Karl is happy to accommodate any request at all, and you simply cannot beat exploring the San Juan’s under full-sail. Don’t think twice!

This is a must do experience if you are visiting Orcas Island!

A few of my friends and I (a group of four) were glamping on Orcas Island July 23-26. As we were planning our activities, I noticed an advertisement for Kruger Escapes on the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce’s website . Their ad looked fun, so I decided to investigate further by visiting the Kruger Escapes’ website. After chatting with my friends and reading some reviews, we booked the 3 hour sunset sailing on the Tomahawk.

The Kruger Escapes website is setup well and easy to use. Booking and payment was a breeze. After our booking, we quickly received a confirmation email with all of the details we needed… what to wear, where to park, what to bring, etc. Shortly thereafter, we received a personal email from Jess to ask us how Kruger could make our sailing special with any requests such catering.

Working through email, I explained that we were planning to have a late lunch so instead of catering a lunch or dinner while onboard the boat, we would prefer to have a dessert catered instead. Jess came up with a plan and assured us that the dessert would be onboard for us to enjoy. I think it was great that she also mentioned she would be tying in items that were locally made. Other than that, we were able to bring our own beverages which was nice.

We were staying near Eastsound on the island and it only took us about 20-30 minutes to reach Deer Harbor where the marina is. As the website mentions, parking can be a bit of a challenge in Deer Harbor, but we found a space to park after a few minutes of searching. If nothing else, we got a good overview of the small village! But maybe plan ahead to allow time for parking. There are a few small shops in the village and an marina store on the docks if you need any last minute items.

The instructions to find the sailboat were easy to follow and we quickly found Karl & Jess on the dock next to the Tomahawk smiling and ready to greet us. After some quick introductions and pleasantries, they ushered us onto the boat and showed us to the downstairs cabin. They went over a detailed but short safety briefing of gear on the boat, the boat’s layout, and some instructions. It was clear that we were in good hands and safety and comfort were always on their minds. There is small lavatory on the boat… So no need to worry about that!

Karl & Jess also make it politely clear that we could offer to help as much as we like with learning how to sail or just hang out onboard and enjoy the experience. We were glad to largely just hang out on the deck and enjoy the views as we were a bit tired from an early morning and island activities!

We put on the lifejackets provided and we were taken back to the upper deck. Jess showed us where we could sit and chat on the deck and provided cushions to sit on. We soon found ourselves pulling out into the harbor and eventually into more open waters. Karl and Jess worked the sailboat with ease answering our questions along the way. They both seemed to know a lot about the history and environment of the area including the surrounding islands. It was clear that Karl & Jess both cared deeply about the environment and love what they do by sharing their sailboats with clients.

We sipped our drinks and chatted as the sails went up and the sun began to set. Jess brought a beautiful dessert tray up to us at an appropriate time. The dessert was not only decadent, but also combined some healthy fruit into the presentation. It was delicious! We asked Jess about how catering works for larger meals or longer sailings, and she happily explained that she works with clients by finding out their preferences and creating a menu that works depending on how long the excursion is.

As our sailing progressed, the views of the surrounding islands were stunning. Karl and Jess let us chat among ourselves or would jump into the conversation when invited. Remember to bring a jacket or sweater as it will obviously be cooler on the water. It was a sunny warm afternoon on the island, but we eventually had to put on our sweaters as the sun began to set. Remember to bring a camera as the photo opportunities are endless. Jess happily took a few photos of our group! Just after the sunset, we headed back towards the marina as our excursion wrapped up.

Karl & Jess offered some last minute tips about places to visit while we were on the island. As we moored the sailboat, my friends gathered up our personal items. After getting onto the docks, we said goodbye to Jess with a quick hug and a handshake for Karl. It felt as though you had made new friends! Jess & Karl would NEVER ask, but don’t forget that it is customary to offer a tip in these instances.

As my friends and I chatted on our way back to the car, we knew we would definitely plan to book another excursion with Jess & Karl in the future! As our visit on the island continued, the sunset sailing was honestly the highlight of our trip.

Jess and Karl are the Master's of a romantic and memorable wedding. Next week Connie and I will be celebrating our one year anniversary and what memories we have of exchanging on vows on the bridge of the Winkapew. Karl found a beautiful cove on the north of Jones Island for our special event, and they were also the witnesses for our wedding.
Jess helped us greatly with the arrangements for the wedding, which we will always be thankful for.
We highly recommend Kruger Escapes for all your events, but if you would like the most memorable opportunity to have your wedding on the beautiful Salish Sea in the San Juan Island, Karl and Jess will fill your every dream.

Thank you Karl and Jess, hope to see you again soon.

We booked a 5 hour sail/SUP experience from 11-4, with a picnic lunch. We are from MI and had to arrange all of this sight unseen with emails between Jess and I. The process was painless and she was sensitive to my budget concerns. I brought my 3 kids, 21, 20 and 11. The sailing could not have been more enjoyable. The Winkapew was STUNNING and several people commented on her beauty as we came in and out of the marina and while we were in the cove.
Jess and Karl were friendly, engaging and courteous. We were made to feel at home from the minute we stepped aboard. Karl clearly knows these waters and took us to a cove where the kids were able to SUP in calm waters and see the flora and fauna of the area from the unique view of the SUPs.
We chose to eat lunch aboard as the sun was shining and there was a gentle breeze. After lunch, the sails went up and we spent well over an hour sailing. Karl's ability to find the winds and position the boat to optimize the breezes was truly impressive. It was clear he has been doing this for a long time, and truly loves it. I regret not bringing my sketch pad and pencils along, or even a travel pan of water colors. It would have been perfect for some creative time or a nice time to read.
We enjoyed watching the seals pop up their heads to satisfy their curiosities and we also saw a few jellies gently swimming in the chilly waters.
We spent 1 week on Orcas and this was the highlight of the trip. I would re-do this experience over a whale watching cruise any day of the week. Money well spent!!

We had a wonderful time sailing with your family (your son is adorable!), and we are so happy you chose Kruger Escapes for your sailing trip while visiting the islands. We appreciate that there are a variety of activities and operators to choose from, and are very glad to hear that your family was so pleased with the decision of sailing with us. I have sailed extensively, and this was, by far, my best charter sailing. Tomahawk is an ocean racer, and has speed yet stability. She is a beautiful boat to sail in the scenic San Juan Islands. Carl and Jess were fabulous hosts, very knowledgeable and engaging, and made the afternoon just perfect. You cannot go wrong with Carl and Jess, and their unique Tomahawk.
