- Jenny from Santa CruzSanta Cruz, California803 contributionsFantastic and freeJust off the main street where the ferry drops off, this History Museum was a great stop. It's free, so see what you like and then leave without feeling like you need to see every exhibit. When we were there on a summer Saturday midday, it was not at all crowded. There was a fantastic main exhibition that talked about key moments in Bainbridge's past. There were lots of artifacts, mostly with good labels, and some top-notch videos to accompany them. I found the portion about Japanese American internment during WWII very moving. There were also smaller displays of postal history in the area and cookbooks, which were quite charming as well.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 27, 2024

It's not a big museum but there is some really unique information here. Definitely stop by if you're in the area...especially if you're a pickleball fan.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 21, 2024

Great information! My granddaughter did school project on the interments of Japanese Americans. I like to provide experiences to back up information gathered from books and internet. We paired this visit with a visit to the Japanese Interment Memorial. This museum had great information on the interment.

What a little gem! We learned about the history and diversity of the earlier residents of the beautiful island. Our volunteer museum docent was very knowledgeable and helpful. We learned about Native American women who came to the island to work and married Filipino workers. We also learned about how the island community rallied around the Japanese American residents when they were sent to the internment camps. There is no cost to visit the museum but of course we left a donation.

This small museum packed a lot of information. It was fascinating to find out about the history of this island, including Native Americans, Japanese, Filipinos, etc. And this island is the birthplace of pickleball! If you're visiting the island, this is well worth a stop.

PRE-ARRANGED TOUR - I pre-arranged to be part of a hosted tour of the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum and the Memorial. It was the best decision I have ever made for coordinating a trip to Bainbridge Island.
COST - It happened to be free to have a hosted tour and on the day that my family went, it was the first Thursday so it was free. Of course, we donated generously to the museum and tipped our docent volunteer.
DOCENT VOLUNTEER - We unimaginably lucked out and had none other than the Lily Kitamoto provide us with a first-hand account of the Japanese Internment days along with her past and present perspective. It was an amazing and personal discussion that brought us back in time to experience what she went through and to point to artifacts in the museum then watch the movie and see pictures of her family and her mother.
PERSPECTIVE - To truly understand the history of Japanese Americans, their experiences on Bainbridge, in America and their patience and endurance for living through those times and hearing the permutation of the same stories of immigration, discrimination, separation and internment reviving in a different way through the Trump Administration is just surreal, astounding and impactful. Whether you are a local or a visitor, you must try to visit this museum, donate money to support their local and overarching NPS effort and try to get a hosted tour by Lily or someone else. It is 1000% more meaningful.

I am not going to spoil the treat you will see and learn from this experience. Please go and learn and see for yourself. You will not regret it.
There is so much more to day about this. I may come back with more detail or write an actual article. Thank you Lily, Katy, Rose and all others at the Museum.

We visited this museum over our Christmas break. What a great experience. We got a personal tour from a man named Chuck who actually lived this history. He knew the families of the people listed in the stories in the exhibits. He was a firefighter and told us a lot about the school fire pictured in an exhibit. He really brought the exhibits to life. What a great addition he is to the experience.

I'm a bit biased because I'm a docent at the museum a few days each month but I do feel that the visitors come away with an understanding of the unique characteristics of the island and its people.
A significant part of this is the Japanese Exclusion during WW2 where 274 island residents were the first of 120,000 Japanese incarcerated for the duration of the war.

We visited Bainbridge Island Historical Museum while touring around on Bainbridge Island. There is a lot of history about Bainbridge Island, and the small museum is packed with information. The staff were extremely friendly, most of them docents or volunteers. Would highly recommend this for any tourist on Bainbridge Island! Plan on spending about an hour here.
