This hike far surpassed the others as our #1 hike of our extended weekend in the Shenandoah area. We hiked several trails in the Shenandoah National Park and then this one, and we all agreed that it was the most memorable. I don't think that the hike was extremely difficult in any section, and absolutely loved the mile section up... More

Not really in Woodstock, Va; Wolf Gap rec ctr is actually in Warrensville, WVa. It's quite gruelling on the way up, I had to stop at least twice (am 46yr old woman). Took us over 3hrs to finish as terrain is quite rocky. At the end, neat little bridge and a rock scramble for the amazing views- like being on... More

Hiking is one of my favorite things to do. And exploring new trails is even better. Big Schloss didn't disappoint. The weather had other plans though. We started up the trail at campsite #9 and it was warm. Once we got to the ridge line, a major gust of wind blew in followed by rain. We were fortunately relatively prepared... More

My daughter and I hiked Big Schloss early on a Sunday morning. We were worried about the heat so got a pretty early start. There was only one other car in the lot when we arrived. I was a bit worried about the difficulty of the trail because I'd read that it was steep and rocky. I was celebrating my... More

The 4 mile round trip hike to me seemed difficult at times. The view though is completely worth it!!

Hardest part is the first 2/3rd mile - pretty rapid increase in altitude. Once up on the ridge the hike is easier. For nearly all sections your hiking on rock so it's important to wear appropriate hiking boots. The views on the ridge-line are worth the hike by itself. The finale of Big Schloss is spectacular. If your seeking fewer... More

Moderate to easy hike. First 3/4 mile of this 2 miles hike is tough. Climbing about 33 degrees incline. Once it levels out, next 1.3 miles has a couple small climbs, but mostly flat/easy inclines. At the end, views are indescribable. Absolutely stunning and well worth the effort.

The hike is challenging in some areas and easy in others. Plenty of laces for a rest, bring a lunch and something to drink, the views are beautiful.

We were a little worried when we saw this hike described as "strenuous" since my husband and I are both a bit out of shape. But we decided to give it a shot, and boy are we glad we did!!!! If you're worried that this is too much of a hike for your condition, just take it slow and make... More

Definitely a workout, but so worth it. The view is absolutely incredible. Don't miss this hike if you're in the area for a visit.
