- Theodore O1 contributionA Civil War Gem in the Northern ShenandoahVery fine little museum with interesting exhibits and artifacts illustrative of Stonewall Jackson's life, focusing on his residence during several months in command at Winchester early in the Civil War. Our tour guide provided excellent commentary on everything from Jackson's family, to his horse, to his sword and Bible, and was quite knowledgeable and helpful on the historical background, offering insights on subjects such as Confederate taxation, Civil War medicine, and of course the Southern Battle Flag, prominently displayed in more than one place at Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters. The museum is refreshingly free from the acrimony and recriminations of the moment, and its gift shop is crammed with relevant books and Confederate memorabilia. Recommended unreservedly!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 29, 2023
- ncstatevaRoanoke, Virginia115 contributionsMust see museumThis museum is definitely worth the time to visit. The staff that handle the tours are quite knowledgeable. You actually walk in the rooms and don't just view them from behind a rope. They have the largest collection of personal items that belonged to Jackson.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 30, 2024
- Colleen P5 contributionsStonewall Jackson’s homeSuch a wonder experience, like nothing I had experienced in any other museum. Reba gave us a one on one personal tour, and shared so many personal things about Jackson. Everything in the house is original. If you only have time for one museum, make this your oneVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024
- chneffWinchester, Virginia322 contributionsVery informativeExcellent tour with a lot of information about the man himself along with his personal artifacts & history. Did a great job telling of his interactions with the local population during his time in Winchester. Our docent, Reba, did an excellent job and was able to answer a lot of questions from our small group. Very knowledgeable.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 13, 2024
- Jim C2 contributionsAn Excellent Tour!A fantastic tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and his stories added tremendous color and contacts for the Civil War conflict and Jackson’s role as a confederate leader. He spent extra time answering our questions. The artifacts were amazing. Easily one of our best tour experiences ever. Thank you!Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 23, 2024
- MurfcatCharleston, South Carolina309 contributionsA Great Civil War Site!I took an hour and a half tour. It was very informative about the house, Stonewall Jackson, and the Civil War in general. The home is lovely and very advanced for a house built in the mid 1850s. There are lots of Jackson’s personal items to be seen. This place is well worth a visit and the docents were very nice and knowledgeable.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 13, 2024
- Warren MNew Bern, North Carolina12 contributionsHidden gemAbsolutely wonderful tour and very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guides. The history and artifacts that are here are indeed quite impressive. Our docent was dressed in historic attire and she was understandably proud, as a native Winchester resident, of the Jackson collection. He stayed here for a few months in the winter but his impact on the town and more importantly the town’s impact on him are still felt today! Parking available on the street in front of the HQ. Takes about 1-1.5 hours to enjoy!Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024
- Sandy OSauk City, Wisconsin1,272 contributionsVery informative tour guide. We visited this site on a very hot day and the air conditioning was wonderful! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the family and the house and was able to answer any questions we had. Many of the furnishings are original or have been donated from family members. My favorite room was at the end of the tour which had so many interesting items to look at and learn about. The only downfall is that for those who can't stand for long periods of time (I think we were here for about 90 minutes), there were no accommodations to sit for a few moments. Lots of great history here, so would recommend it for adults or teens with an interest.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 11, 2024
- Brett OWashington DC, District of Columbia346 contributionsGreat experience. So much History!Had a great experience at the Stonewall Jackson Headquarters Museum. The tour was advertised to take 40 minutes - ours lasted nearly 90 minutes. Each piece of furniture, art work and architectural feature was described in detail, with many fascinating stories to put them in context. Highly recommend. Our guide for the tour was extremely knowledgeable about the subject. A small gift shop in the former kitchen of the home is filled with interesting and affordable books and gifts. Admission is $10.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 13, 2024

My wife and I both being history buffs, we often take trips to places that are historical. After reading David Mc Cullough's "The Pioneers" and James Robertson's "Stonewall Jackson," we decided to take a trip along the Ohio to Marietta Ohio, Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Beverly, West Virginia, then to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The highlight of our tour so far was visiting the Headquarters of Stonewall Jackson in Winchester, Virginia. Not only did we find the most informative tour, but we found a tour guide in Brian Daly who knows the history well and could not be more patient in taking the time to thoroughly answer all of our questions. After reading Roberson's 762 page book in very small font, we had many. Unlike some of the other tours, Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters contains many of the pieces of furniture that were in the house at the time he was there. It is a beautiful old home and that has been well maintained. Like I said in the beginning, it has been a highlight of this trip and ranks up there at the top of the many tours we have taken over the years and one we will remember. Very reasonably priced. I highly recommend it as a must to anyone visiting the Winchester area.

We visited the Stonewall Jackson Headquarters last Thursday. Our guide was terrific. She told many interesting anecdotes about Stonewall Jackson and shared her opinion of the local battlefields. The tour took about an hour and was very reasonable in price. If you're interested in the Civil War, I would highly recommend visiting the Headquarters.

My Granddaughter and I stopped here while on a Civil War tour. Jim is an amazing guide knowing the history of many of Stonewall Jackson’s personal items in this museum. Jim, himself, is a treasure full of information! He tailored his tour to our specific interests and gave us a great recommendation which book to purchase to read anecdotes about Jackson.
This place is a must see for anyone interested in the Civil War! We both highly recommend Jim and this museum for your next trip!

I found the experience to be very interesting and educational. I'm absolutely much more informed about a painful era of our Country's history that continues to resonate today. It's important to explore and learn from these times. People were very similar to those who live in our current time. There was bravery and Faith on both sides. We must find common ground and move to be a more peaceful country both within ourselves and among each other.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and respectful about the history of the home. Importantly, he passionately presented the qualities of Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson the man and the period of time in which he lived. The artifacts within the home are beyond impressive and the strong effort of authenticity is apparent.
Also, nice to hear about an ancestor of Mary Tyler Moore who had this home built. She had also made contributions over many years of historical preservation. One example is the funding of wall paper installation that mimicked the pattern accurate to the time of Stonewall Jackson.
Highly recommend this important site!

A must-visit for history buffs and the clueless alike. My friend and I rang the doorbell, not knowing anything about the museum or Jackson himself. Ryan greeted us and proceeded to take us on a tour of the house, pointing out items of interest, giving us insight into Jackson's role in the war, but more importantly an idea of the man behind the name. We left more knowledgeable than we arrived and astonished at the number of fascinating items inside such an unassuming house. Thank you, Ryan, for a fabulous tour.

The tour was amazing, as was the docent, Jim. He had the passion you would hope for, and really wanted the museum visitors to have a great experience.............as if he was giving the Governor himself a tour. The artifacts in the house were the best collection of Stonewall's effects ANYWHERE. Could not have asked for a better experience.

This is a wonderful historical gem in a beautiful neighborhood just blocks away from the Pedestrian Mall. I learned so much from a lovely, friendly, knowledgeable tour guide, Reba. I could have listened to her all day.
The home was not Jackson's but used while the owner was away. It is a unique style, none like it in the area. The original owner was from upstate NY and took the "Hudson" style with him. It is all original except for the downstairs floor and all furnishings are antique from both the owner and Jackson. Unfortunately they dont allow photos inside...
The small collection of flags is impressive. The detail about Jackson and his personal life are stirring. I was so moved that I purchased a book written by his wife. There are many layers to this figure and it is worth learning about them.
The tour took about 45 minutes. I bought a bundle pass so I can visit two other sites. It is like getting one admission free.

Our tour guide Toby was outstanding. She is knowledgeable and clearly passionate about Stonewall's legacy and the time period generally. It was one of the best museum tours we've ever had. Lots of original historical pieces, laid out very well. The authentic, handmade desk that Jackson used to plan out his Valley campaign was very special to see. Highly recommended, especially for history buffs.

Wow… I was just passing through Winchester and had a couple hours to kill so I picked this site/museum as my place to explore. I sure am glad I did. My guide was Brian and he was very genial and knowledgeable about both the house and General Jackson. You can do the tour in as quick as 40 minutes or spend 90, it really depends on your speed (and how busy they are). Admission was reasonably priced and there is a little gift shop at the end of the tour. You can tell the people who work here really care about where they are and what they do. Winchester is fortunate to have such a historical gem.

$5.00 adult, $4.50 seniors, less for children. Best value, a $10.00 ticket for three attractions: Jackson's HQs, Washington's Office and Abram's Delight, ticket good foe a full year.
