A Lovely Little Museum
Sep 2021
This is a wonderful little museum, right in the center of Old Town Winchester with its shops and restaurants. The museum is filled with artifacts from the numerous engagements in and around Winchester during The Great Unpleasantness, and the building's role in the Civil War is fascinating.
Admission is reasonable, and someone with an interest in the Civil War can easily spend a couple of hours browsing the exhibits.
Be sure to note the graffiti that was scrawled into the walls and is now highlighted with what looks to be shadow-box frames but is really just glass over the writing.

Great museum!

Inexpensive and super interesting! The graffiti remaining on the walls from the soldiers was very cool. My kids really enjoyed ringing the bell as well. Definitely worth a stop!

Wonderful

This is an exceptional Civil War museum with a nationally recognized collection of over 3,000 CW artifacts on the 2nd floor. The graffiti is fascinating, and you can ring the courthouse bell. Well worth the admission price. Volunteer docents explain the history and uses of this Georgian style courthouse. This museum is ADA compliant with ramp access to the entrance and an elevator to the 2nd floor. There is a small gift shop with souvenirs and books for all ages. Located on the mall in Historic Winchester, there are many shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Definitely a must see!

Cool place!

One of the best military museums I've ever visited. I especially enjoyed the Civil War-era graffiti. Very interesting! I don't think there are many Confederate museums with that many historical objects that are still open to the public. The old court room was really cool. My kids loved visiting here.

A Definite Must See!
Oct 2020
Probably the best of its kind that we've had the pleasure of visiting. The artifacts are well displayed. If you're a Civil War buff, this is a "Don't Miss It" destination. Four of visited the museum figuring we'd spend maybe an hour there - we spent over 2-hours there! Never saw artillery ammo and the various mini balls displayed and explained so well.

During the restoration project that became the museum, graffiti was discovered behind the faux wall paneling. The writing was left by Confederate and Union soldiers who fought at Winchester during the Civil War. Fascinating!

What's needed is a docent to explain the restoration and discovery of the graffiti and to answer questions guests may have about the exhibits. One of our party asked the individual manning the admission desk a question and she had no idea what he was talking about.

The entrance is at the top of the building's staircase and is a problem for someone with difficulty using stairs (look at a photo of the front of the building). Once inside, there is an elevator.

Ok for a quick trip

This museum felt half baked. They have some wonderful artifacts and an amazing building but the artifacts are displayed in such an amateur manner it took away from the experience. Look to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley for how to display a collection.

Small but mighty

Little museum, very worth the stop. We enjoyed the exhibits and I really enjoyed the POW artwork and writings that are on the walls. We challenged ourselves to ring the bell one handed. Only my husband was able to do it in that matter.

If you are civil war buff this is great little place to go. It is the old courthouse during war that was often used as hospital and jail. The display and articles are great. There is guns, ammo, uniform relics, etc. The floor creeks but makes it more authentic. Great little find.

Artifacts abound!
Jan 2020 • Couples
Really great collection of artifacts. The highlight is perhaps the graffiti left by Federal prisoners - one of which is a curse upon President Davis. For the kids, you can ring the bell of this 1840 court house. Civil War buffs and history lovers should absolutely include this in their visit to Winchester!

Museum in Historic Courthouse.
Aug 2019
The museum is located mostly on the second floor with a fair number of Civil War artifacts. Soldiers' names are written on the walls. Store and books are for sale on the first floor. There is also an old bell in the belfry. The front yard was used to as a prisoner compound. The City of Winchester changed occupation 73-75 times. Elevator available. The museum is located on the walking mall with many shops and cafes within walking distance.
