This was a great workout and left me so sore. I will say this is the only location I’ve been to that makes you do each site in order so you are always behind a group of people. Also the ladders can be difficult to climb, other locations had stairs instead which I like better. I recommend to where long sleeves and pants because you will get dirty if you don’t know how to land a zipline

Hello,
Thanks so much for leaving a rating of your experience at Go Ape - Williamsburg. We hope you enjoyed an epic outdoor adventure! The course definitely has some challenging parts, but there's nothing like getting through a tough obstacle and the reward of ziplining back down to the forest floor. Our Treetop Journey course offers stairs throughout, however, our Treetop Adventure course is all ladders. We are sure future guests will appreciate your tips & insights. Hope to see you in the trees again soon!

We went here as a family of four. It was my wife, my 9 year old daughter, my 6 year old son and myself. We reserved the Treetop Journey a day in advance online. It was almost sold out. Make sure you reserve online before you go as you may not be able to have the fun if you just show up. There were three different obstacle courses of varying degrees of difficulty that all ended in a zip line in the Treetop Journey. We started with the easiest one and my daughter got nervous a few times but got through it. My son did great until the zip line but he went down and had a blast. Our second time through we did the medium level course and my daughter got real nervous but we talked her through it and she did great. I will admit even I got nervous seeing and then going through the rope bridge that was a single piece of wood wide and in five moving pieces between platforms. We all made it and did the zip line a second time. We wanted to go through a third time and since we still had 5 minutes left before our time was up we were able to go through the course one last time. The staff were so friendly and nice the entire time. As a family, we all agreed we will definitely come back. My wife and I are excited to go back and do a higher, more difficult course with a longer zip line. We will do that either when the kids are old enough or just as a date on our own. Tip 1: To save $9 per person, you can bring your own gloves, it can be any type of gloves so long as it’s not the thin plastic kind. Garden gloves or work gloves work. My wife liked the gloves we purchased from Go Ape and we will save them for our future rope adventures. Tip #2: bring a full change of clothes. The Zipline ends in a pile of mulch which sticks to your clothes (especially the fleece kind) and it is hard to get off so you will be itchy if you don’t change your clothes after. We also noticed that the mulch can get inside your underwear and make you itchy.

We had the pleasure of Mamey(sp?) being our instructor and Chase getting us started. Both were professional, funny, and friendly. They made our experience phenomenal and worth coming back and recommending others for that location. The obstacles we went with the extreme routes and ending with the Tarzan swing. For being scared of heights, we conquered all thanks to the staff's tips and encouragement. It was such a great feeling to conquer these challenges and personal fears. We loved it! Such a great way to start the day. The instructions prior to our reservation was perfect, stay hydrated and get food for energy was totally needed prior to "going ape." Thank you for making our day and weekend so exciting!

Awful , Absolutely awful experience. For people who have never zip lined and just looking for something fun it’s an OK activity to do please do not think this is real zip lining it’s far from it this location has four zip lines that are in use five total one closed down you are never that far off the ground never above the treetops And we were never told last obstacle was closed so after paying almost $254 and getting four zips that anyone could really do it’s not worth the money. To say this course is challenging is laughable to even consider this as zip lining is not exactly what I would call this. Not a good experience not worth the money if you want to do zip lining go to a real zip lining place it’s more reasonable you get more bang for your buck and lots of zip lines not just 4 which is what you get here . Please spend your money somewhere else . You can have the same experience making a makeshift course in your own yard and you can save your money .

My husband and teenage sons were excited to do the 3-hr Treetop Adventure while staying in Williamsburg. I called before booking and was told that instructional time would be minimal and that if they finished the course before their 3 hours were up, they could redo the course elements of their choosing until their reservation time was over. Sadly, the course instructor was late to get started, and she spent nearly an entire hour on instruction, eating up 1/3 of the time we paid for before they even got started on the course. Once underway, when my guys got to the 1st zipline, they were told to wait for a 2nd instructor to arrive at the landing area before they could proceed. They waited there for 10-15 minutes before the 2nd instructor arrived. Finally on their own, the guys zipped through the course pretty quickly and finished around 2:30. But instead of allowing them to continue back through, a 3rd staff member took their harnesses and told them they were done. I feel like we were sold 3 hours of fun and only received half of that. Very disappointing. The course itself is great. But the staff doesn't seem to have their act together. Even worse, I answered the post-adventure survey explaining my disappointment, and a week later, I have received no response at all.

Hi Sue,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. I completely understand your frustration with the situation. We want Go Ape to be an enjoyable experience for all of our guests. Our Treetop Adventure is a self-paced course, and upon check-in, guests are told to expect the course to take 2-3 hours to complete. Safety is our top priority, and our instructors go through a detailed safety brief that is not minimal. I apologize if you were told otherwise, but we want to ensure all guests understand our safety protocols and feel comfortable going up into the trees.
I apologize for the wait on the zip line. We have spoken with site staff to ensure that will not happen again. Once a guest finishes the course, they are greeted by an instructor to take their harness and give them their completion certificate. Since Treetop Adventure is not a timed experience and is designed in a linear fashion, we typically do not have guests repeating any portions of the course as they would on Treetop Journey.
We're reviewing your feedback with our site staff to ensure that future situations are handled with more care and clear communication. Please feel free to reach out directly if you have any other comments or suggestions, and we'll be happy to help.
Cheers,
MM

My favorite part wasn't the awesome course nor was it the thrill of the breath taking ride. It wasn't the beautiful landscape neither. Although it was all of those things, my favorite part was the employees and the way they treated my son and me! They were all so friendly and helpful. Patient with us first timers. Eager to help an over weight, out of shape, elder lady such as myself! They complimented us on the few parts we did well and reassured me on the parts I struggled with. Made me feel less embarrassed when I got in a place I couldn't get out of without assistance. You guys are awesome! A Plus!! We will definitely be returning!

My family (9 & 12) had a great afternoon at Go Ape in Freedom Park. They space parties out and with three courses you really get to enjoy the time not be rushed through. The employees were great too. They were friendly, took time to answer my 9-year-olds questions, and even kidded around. Most importantly they made sure you were safe and having fun! I would recommend this activity for families.

We were on a holiday to Williamsburg and were searching around stuff for kids .. and found - go ape… it was an awesome place for kids to enjoy .. there were multiple activities for kids and we could easily spend 3-4 hours there …
Two main attractions are tree top journey and axe throwing . There were multiple levels for free top adventures. The advance ones were kinda scary , and hence we went to the kids one. It was awesome . Kids loved all tracks and finishing it off with zip lines . There were about 3 routes/tracks in each level . Loved it..
Axe throwing was the best (for adults) . Smaller kids couldn’t take part because of safety rules , but elder kids and w adults enjoyed it. Our first time with axe throw and it was just fabulous . Lots of parking and nice rest rooms . This place is a must go , if u are around williamsburg. Service was a bit slow but overall enjoyed it .. :)

Combo rope course and zip line .
There are less than eight zip lines..maybe six . Maybe two are longer , others are short zips.
On zip lines u don't zip tree to tree, it's tree to ground . So u can get dirty! The stopping is tricky . Or can be.
The ropes part of the course is pretty cool with different challenges. It's a good workout . Some hv easy options and challenging options .
Unlike zip tour, no instructors to take you from zip line or line or tree to tree , it's more like a rope course where u venture on your own. So experience can depend on who is in your group or others you get grouped with.
Even In shaded by trees , it's humid.

My husband and 6 year old daughter did the tree top journey. It was challenging for my husband but not so daunting that my 6 year old was scared. There were 3 different courses that got progressively harder. You can choose to stay with the easier course. The staff was wonderful and we felt very safe. Even though it was fully booked we didn't feel it was crowded. My husband and daughter didn't have to do much waiting for others.
There is ample parking and there are restrooms. There were games and benches to sit on for "spectators." I was able to walk around underneath and take photos. I believe you can bring your phone but there would be no way to hold it as you need two hands to balance. The gloves we purchased from Go Ape were substantial too.
One bit of advice: plan to get sweaty and dirty landing on the zip line. You may want to bring a change of cloths. Water was provided!

Do you have to buy gloves for the adventure ? If so how much are they ? Or can you buy elsewhere? Ty
Written July 13, 2022
I echo the answer above. We bought them there since it was our first-time zip lining but the employees did say good gardening gloves were a great substitute.

If watching can you bring a leashed pet?
Written August 12, 2018
Thank you for your question. The pet policy depends on the park location so you'd have to make sure they were permitted into the park and that all clean-up after your pet rules were followed. You may not be able to get up close to the other guest and the course but you will definitely be able to watch the course with a leashed pet.

I have one previous zip line experience and I have to tell you, I stink at braking. Does the equipment at Go Ape have hand brakes or do we have to stop ourselves by a hand on the cable. I can't tell you how many times I came into the poor instructor, at the other end, at full speed.
Thank you for taking the time to address this for me.
Written February 3, 2018
If you "air run" or "pedal" it kept me straight. Landing was a breeze. If you turn dragging your heels stops you. Wear older shorts you don't mind getting dirty with mulch on your butt.
Written July 10, 2018
Not sure. when they talk about your waist. do they mean around your belly-button or an inch or so above it
Written October 13, 2017
Hey there,
At Go Ape USA, our harnesses fit right around where the belly button is though it will be slightly different on everyone. The maximum waist measurement of the harness is 43 inches and the leg loops (which go around the top of your thighs) is 28 inches.
Let us know if you have any other questions!
Cheers,
KF

Hi Debbie,
We like to call our activity a Treetop Adventure as it features 40+ obstacles in the trees and five exciting ziplines! We think this is what sets us apart from canopy tours and other similar activities.
I hope this helps!
Cheers,
KF

I see it says no sandal or open heeled shoes. I am assuming this means open toed sandals or slip Ons. Can you wear closed toed keens? These are technically sandals. We use these for rock climbing and kayaking in the river with rocks and have no issues with our feet. We also used these in Mexico on a similar tour.
Written July 29, 2017
Hello, and thanks for reaching out with your question! Our safety policy requires closed-toed and closed-heeled shoes for zip line landings. We have mulch landing zones, and when coming in sideways or backwards, you need to drag your heels to slow your momentum. To prevent injury, we require a completely covered heel and toe. If your Keens are like that, you shouldn't have a problem! If not, you'll want to grab a different pair of shoes before coming to see us. Cheers!

No Keens. We had one kids in Keens and had to find a pair of shoes. There's lots of healing dragging.

Are there bathrooms on the course and can you use them once you are harnessed. Just checking since you never know when kids or us adults will need to go :)
Written April 3, 2017
The bathrooms are a 1 minute walk across a park road, so very close by. An instructor will have to help you take off the harness and put it back on again. Two of us spent 2 hours on the course going at a pretty good pace. It's fun!
