About
8 Chains North is a family-owned and -operated farm winery located in the town of Waterford in picturesque Loudoun County, Virginia. Owner and Winegrower Ben Renshaw's careful attention to viticulture reveals itself in our old-world-style wines -- rich, dry reds with supple tannins, and crisp, dry whites with lovely acidity. Come visit us in our spacious, comfortable Tasting Room and enjoy two tasting options -- wines only, or wines paired with handcrafted chocolate truffles. Take a seat on the patio overlooking the vineyard, or in cooler weather, warm up by the fireplace inside. We offer a lite fare menu or you may bring your own picnic. We welcome groups with advance reservations and can accommodate limos and buses (no party buses allowed.) 8 Chains North is pleased to welcome your well-behaved children and dogs.

Do not come here. Definitely do not book a party here. There are plenty of wineries in the area, and if I were a wedding DJ, this location would be on the ‘Do Not Play’ list.
As soon as I arrived with a group of five women, we stood in the tasting room for twenty minutes before any staff acknowledged us. The venue was not crowded. There was a small group celebrating a milestone birthday party. Their table was shoved into a dark corner near the bathroom, even though the tasting room had plenty of open space. There was also a bachelor party in a separate room, which was also a large space, and again they were shoved back into a corner. There were very few other patrons at the facility that were not with a party.
The group that I was with was celebrating my friend’s upcoming wedding as well. A patron from the bachelor party ordered a bottle of wine for our bride to be, and we asked the staff if we could return the favor. We were told no, because that party was supposed to have left by now. Red flag number two.
I finally got someone to wait on me, and decided that they were extremely inefficient with their tasting flights. The new owner behind the counter complained that everyone was ordering different flights. Are you kidding me. The point of a tasting flight is to determine which bottle of wine you’d like to buy. Anyways. I ordered a bottle of wine for my group and some cheese and crackers. The only food that they offer is cheese out of a cooler and crackers out of a basket, but even that seems like it was complicated for them to ensure that it was stocked. I told them we had a group of five, but they gave me three plates. Their point-of-sale system was way too complicated for the business that they run. I had to manually enter my debit card number as the staff walked away and left me to figure it out myself.
All was well for a short time. My group of five drank about 4 bottles of rose. A member of my group was complimenting the birthday girl from another party on her clothes and bought her a flight. One of the staff members told me that I needed to get my friend away from them. It seemed very strange, but I pulled her into another conversation to avoid conflict.
Then a staff member told me that I needed to think about ordering a car SOON because they close at six. It was approximately 4:30. Again, always happy to accommodate, I said “sure can do” and we ordered our Ubers. The bride to be decided to buy one bottle more bottle for our group to share while we waited for our car. She was told by the staff that they had been watching her and would not longer be able to serve her. She was so embarrassed that she went outside and cried. It was the most stomach turning, inappropriate thing for me to witness my wonderful friend who came here to celebrate a life event be treated so poorly by this staff. What would possess a person to act so cruelly to a bride dressed in pristine white who had been planning this celebration at this location? There are so many other ways that they could have handled themselves. The easiest thing they could have done if they insisted on cutting off my friend, which from my vantage point seemed extremely unnecessary, was to still sell her an uncorked bottle and ask that she enjoy it at home instead.
Our Uber driver that took us from this winery back to our house told us that he had picked up other patrons from this winery with similar complaints.
The bottom line is that if another looming shut-down doesn’t force the current owners to put the winery up for sale again, their lack of hospitality and mismanagement will run this business into the ground. A true zero-star experience, which does not happen to me often. These owners and staff need to work on their food and beverage industry 101. I’ll never go back.

Can't say enough great things about this place. They were extremely accommodating for everything from our initial proposal (this is where we got engaged) to all of our rehearsal dinner requests. They even let us bring décor and beer to the venue days in advance so that the wedding party wouldn’t need to be stressed on the day of. In particular, Elly has scheduling, communication, and coordination locked down. It was the perfect venue for such an event - a beautiful winery with the vineyards just outside the gates. The beautiful yard area and their main event room easily accommodated our group of 45 (and could have held far more comfortably), and the bartending staff was very professional/friendly. They also have a cool backdrop of wine barrels in the main event room that made it so that we didn’t need to bring much in the way of decor. Love 8 Chains!

Great wine tasting (socially distanced!) with lovely views of the vineyards and surrounding countryside. All the wines were great, but the Tempranillo was the winner.
Pleasant and helpful staff.

A very comfortable visit that had my my wife's eye's popping at the spread of chocolates. Tastings start at $9 with a $5 optional chocolate pairing. I had the Mourvèdre, which was very good, but one I would cellar for a few years. Nice views of the vineyard and live music made the experience very good. Since we didn't have the tasting, I can't speak to all their wines. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Dog friendly+++!

The tasting room is pleasant, but not as grandiose or unique as some. However they more than make up for it in the quality of the wines and friendly staff.

We like the reds more than whites here, but both are drinkable. The exterior is lovely, overlooking the vineyards.

Well worth a visit!

What a nice location with awesome views of the vineyard! The wine sampling was great and the lady who helped us was very knowledgeable. They were busy, but we didn't have to wait very long to be helped. I'll defiantly make it back when we travel to that area again.

We've been members of the winery's Wine Club for 3 years now and I can't think of a better place to spend an afternoon than 8 Chains. The staff of the Tasting Room is incredible and knowledge and the wines are routinely excellent. The winery's owner who is frequently in the Tasting Room is very friendly and unassuming and always makes you feel right at home.

We had our daughter's wedding ceremony and reception there 2 years ago and our friends and family still remark on how incredible the winery and reception was.

Why fly to Napa when you can take the beautiful drive to 8 Chains?

We found 8 Chains Winery a few years ago. We were just driving around and stop there for a glass of wine and music on one of summer sundays. Few years later, we are getting married there. We had 12 to 3 reserved room. We got ready upstairs in rooms for bride and groom. Those rooms are absolutily beutiful. People who work there are great (Emily, Elly). Everything was the way we want it. The way i visioned that my wedding should be. Our guests loved it. Thank you Elly and team to help me and make my vision come true!!!
Wine, fun, and 8 Chains!!!

We had to plan our son's rehearsal dinner from out-of-state. Since our guest list originally consisted of 99 guests, our options of venues was limited due to the size of our party. The venue we chose was the Compass room at 8 Chains North (8CN) in Waterford, Virginia. We selected a caterer with experience at the venue, Dale Long of Food4Thought Catering. We were very happy with every aspect of our decision.
Dale made selecting a menu easy. Her response to my emails was fast! I truly appreciated how she worked with me to create a menu which suited our needs. She even offered a special children's menu for our two young flower girls and ring bearer. Everything was beautifully prepared and delicious. We highly recommend the truffle infused risotto balls, pork meatballs with ricotta and sage, roasted salmon, and beef medallions in a shallot, red wine reduction sauce. Oh, and the assorted mini cheesecakes were scrumptious!

Elly Sullivan of 8CN was equally responsive and accommodating. We really appreciate the time Elly took to help us select the wines to offer our guests. We couldn't be happier with our selections! The Compass Room and the veranda overlooking the vineyard at sunset was beautiful. Lantern centerpieces with fairy lights added to the ambience. What a wonderful way for two families to come together and get to know each other the day before the wedding! It was a great leap of faith for us to plan this event from out-of-state. Food 4 Thought Catering and 8 Chains North did not disappoint. We highly recommend them!

My family hosted a surprise 60th birthday party for our mom here last weekend and we couldn't have been happier with our experience! Everyone we had contact with was so helpful answering any questions we had and working with us to customize just the right event for our needs. What really stood out to me was one little detail they did that in my mind was going above and beyond. We had casually mentioned that we were getting my mother to the winery that night by telling her we had spots at a "Sip and Paint" class. We were shocked upon arrival to see that they took it upon themselves to create a sign that said "Sip and Paint" and placed it at the entrance of the room the party was being held in. It was a simple sign but made such an impact on us and made us feel like they truly valued having us as guests and took a genuine interest in our event. We could not have been happier with our choice to have our event at 8 Chains and would highly recommend it to anyone! We will most certainly be back!
