Overview
More
Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes. Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

So long as you remember to have ID and car documents available you will thoroughly enjoy Cape Henry Lighthouse and its surroundings. I made the mistake of not having sufficient ID to gain entry to this attraction on my first visit which lies in the...More

Great historical site to take the kids. They have a scavenger hunt for the younger kids and a certificate at the end once you've completed the climb. Cost is $8 for adults and $6 for kids. Beautiful views.

We went to see the lighthouses. It appears as if you are going into a restricted area when you are really just entering the base where the lighthouses are located. You will need updated license, registration, and insurance proof. They will search your car. It...More

We never get tired of visiting this lighthouse. The views are incredible. The climb up isn't too bad and the history of it is interesting to read about

be pre-warned, this is on an active military sight. You will be asked for ID, and you will open your hood, trunk, and doors. This sounds like a big deal, but it takes 5 minutes. The views are awesome, and you can climb the old...More

Lots of stairs, but the view is remarkable ! This was the first ever US federally funded building. Great view of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and not unusual to see US Navy doing training opps.

once past security, there is a small gift shop where you get tickets. They also had two lighthouse stamps for my lighthouse passport book; one each for the old, and the new. The climb was interesting, but there were no landings to rest like in...More

This was a nice little side trip and resulted in a good climb and beautiful views and photo op. Be aware that in order to enter the outpost where the lighthouse sits, you must submit to a full search of your vehicle at the entrance...More

Be prepared to enter a military base. ID required and probably a vehicle search. With that being said the visit was worth the hassle. There are almost 200 steps if you want to climb to the top. Awesome view from up there.
