About
Hit Virginia Beach’s three-mile-long oceanfront promenade to people-watch, shop, and eat in a relaxed ambience. The boardwalk features a separate bike path—perfect for cycling and rollerblading. There's also a bronze statue of King Neptune which you can spot from miles away. When hungry, head over to the restaurants at the neighboring Pacific Avenue. Virginia Beach is also worthy of visiting during winter when Christmas lights turn the boardwalk into a stunning spot. To make the most of your stay, you might want to book one of the many waterfront hotels in the area. – Tripadvisor

- slb10717Plattsburgh, New York103 contributionsAlways a treat!Love visiting the beach and boardwalk, people watching and the many photo opps along the way! Only turn off for me is the overly friendly relentless pushy sales people at the end of the pier. No thank you doesn’t work even said twice and it deters us from going to the pier.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 17, 2023
- angie550Richmond, Virginia83 contributionsFun and relaxing vibeEven though I have lived in VA for 20 years, I really hadn't explored the Boardwalk. It used to have a reputation for being a little sketchy, but when I visited last week with two adult female friends and two young teen girls, we felt completely safe and enjoyed an evening stroll. Hotels and restaurants were open with music flowing out and created a great vibe. Had ice cream and enjoyed the sounds of the ocean. Everything was perfectly maintained and clean.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 17, 2023
- ErinV924Valley Falls, New York415 contributionsNice beach town but nothing extraordinaryNot your typical boardwalk. Actually a cement walk. Not sure when the boards went away. It is a beautiful walk. All the shopping is actually one street over and has your typical beach town shops. Nothing extraordinary for a beach town.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 30, 2023
- ffletc2344443 contributionsVA Beach BoardwalkThe boardwalk is great - I like the way there are entryways/exits at most every street that crosses Atlantic. I was also impressed at how nicely it is maintained - I noticed clean-up crews out early each morning picking up trash and emptying containers. There were even vehicles out on the beach smoothing the sand and collecting trash.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 18, 2023
- KK78Bay Shore, New York817 contributionsNice place to walkNice boardwalk to walk along on a sunny day. Everything looked cleaned, even the bathrooms, and water stations sprinkled around. Walked to the huge Statue of King Neptune.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 25, 2023
- AvmigKlamath Falls, Oregon214 contributionsAmazing holiday lights. We made reservations to take the drive down the boardwalk to view all the Christmas lights. The city did an amazing job with miles of lights and action displays on both the ocean side and business side of the boardwalk. The traffic moved rather slowly because you could stop in your car and get hot chocolate or other treats. While it was a great experience I would recommend anyone who does this next year stay in the ocean side lane as the vendors are on the business side lane.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 6, 2024
- worleybird98Hudson, Ohio805 contributionsInteresting visit! We were visiting for Thanksgiving, which is obviously not beach weather, but since I had never seen Virginia Beach, I wanted to make sure we took a look. After a delicious breakfast nearby, we walked a block or two to get to the boardwalk. This is a paved road, that is nice and wide so it's easy to stroll without bumping into people, as it was surprisingly busy, even for late November. Apparently, for the Christmas holidays, they line the boardwalk with lights and all sorts of Christmas displays, and then at night you can drive your car down the boardwalk to view everything. We were there midmorning, so obviously couldn't see the lights, but the displays were very significant. We enjoyed all the great works of art, including Neptune statue, and the Veterans park. I could see where this would be a lot of fun in the summer, being right up against so many hotels and condo complexes. Lots of stores selling all sorts of swimwear and accessories line the streets about a block from the boardwalk, along with lots of different ice cream shops, and other snack, and food stops.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 3, 2024
- Teenie2000Gloucester, Massachusetts511 contributionsBeautiful walking areaThe boardwalk is a beautiful stretch along the shore with plenty of restaurant options nearby. We were impressed with the size of the boardwalk & that they offer separate lanes for walking and bicycling. However, even though there is sufficient signage we still encountered several bicyclists on the pedestrian walkway. If you need a break or just want to sit and people watch there were many benches along the boardwalk. There are also numerous access points to the beach. We were happy that dogs were welcome to go on the beach and that the beach was very clean. The activity level and noise level increased as early evening approached. It was a great place to spend the day.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- Ronald 820016 contributionsAllways a pleasant walk on the VB Boardwalk. The boardwalk is a treasure. Went to the end of the pier. Dolphins, surfers, fishermen were all active. $4 charge for visitors to the pier. Maintenace crews were repairing cracks along the boardwalk. it was good to see nobody tripping over poor concrete. The Ocean views ever changing and fighter jets soaring overhead.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 19, 2024

The only reason i chose to take my family to Virginia beach this summer was the city's message of being a clean and safe from virus environment. I saw everywhere including inside hotels and restaurants people without masks and nobody to stop them to educate about the consequences of their reckless behavior.
Water was dirty and with foul smell for almost all of the week. We had only one day of a clean ocean experience.
The sand and boardwalk were clean.
Summary: the positives were not enough to justify the trip.
Virginia Beach authorities need to do a better job in enforcing mandatory health behavior during pandemic as well as inforn people about the ocean water conditions. Why so many jelly fish for so many days, why brown colored and stinky water, etc?

This is the second time coming to the Virginia Beach boardwalk in the month of November but first time for the Holiday lights.
Based on different places that I have been, this lights show is over priced $$ .
They charge $25 Monday-Friday and $30 on weekends.
When I was driving to the entrance I asked why they don’t have any kind of sign with the prices. ?
The lady I talked to responded with a very rude attitude saying “Yes we do have the signs” and I told her No you don’t have any sign!!
The problem is when we realize how much it was, we couldn’t exit from the line. There is not exit path accessible.
$30 just too much!

Very nice boardwalk, has separate area for bikes to ride. Restaurants available at different motels and some have musicians playing. Several benches along to relax and rest. However, I could smell people smoking marijuana right in public. Not appropriate for a public beach..

The concrete and asphalt boardwalk runs along the beach for several miles and is used by everyone. Walkers, joggers, skateboards, bicycles, and strollers are there from early morning until late at night. It's divided so that there's one section for bicycles and one for everyone else, but we found that many people ignored that and just went wherever they felt like going. It is well lit and crowded enough to feel safe. We saw very few panhandlers or indigent people. There are even outdoor showers located here and there for beachgoers, and every few blocks you can see sculptures and works of art.

If you have never visited Virginia Beach during the Christmas Holiday you should do so. The Christmas lights along the board walk are awesome. Your allowed to drive your vehicle on the boardwalk from one end to the other and view all the light displays on the resort and hotel fronts as well as on the beach itself. Foot traffic is suspended on the boardwalk after dark so you have to walk on the beach and not the boardwalk. But this a definite must see if you appreciate lighted displays during the holidays

Recently visited 4 days with our 2 older teenagers. It was our first time in VA. Having only been to a few NJ boardwalks we thought VA beach would be similar but its not. There is what I would call a walking path and separate biking bath along the beach with a few stores and a fishing pier that you have to pay to actually go on which is dumb. The majority of the stores are on Atlantic Ave and its not the safest area by far. We saw a lot of drug addict and homeless and we certainly questioned our safety. It seemed safer the higher up the road numbers were. It was OK to visit the beach was nice and less crowded than NJ beaches but the boardwalk or lack of what we thought it would be was a disappointment.

Besides the beach there enty of places to rent everything from bikes to paddle boards and jets skis. The Boardwalk is quite long and lined with not just hotels but also shops and restaurants. One end has a fishing pier that does have a fee even if you just want to site see and not fish. The good thing is that if you do want to fish you don't need a license. Grommet park is a nice play area for the little ones. There are also free concerts during yhe summer. Nice place to spend a family vacation.

We went over spring break-maybe it was a bad time of year. There were young adults riding skateboards with giant speakers on their back. Their were also ppl promoting their religion with large signs .... that was unexpected?

The boardwalk at Virginia Beach is a fun place. There are statues, bike and skate board lanes, Christmas light show at Christmas, a few restaurants and shops open in the winter, dogs being walked, dolphins playing in the ocean- just wonderful!
I really enjoyed my time on the boardwalk. There is something for everybody. Will go back again in the springtime.

The Boardwalk is nice for a leisure stroll. The main statue to see is king Neptune. However the length of the boardwalk has many small things to see along the way such as statues of Fish, crabs, clams, flowers etc. There's a really nice military display about the 18th block. Parking varies from lot to garage. We parked for 5.00 behind Ben and Jerry's. You can walk easily since it is concrete. Many benches for resting.

It's our 20th anniversary. We only have two or three days midweek in October (17th or 18th to 20th) with our actual anniversary the 19th. My husband (bless him!) wants to splurge. He's a history museum guy. And I desperately need some ocean time.
We're coming from upstate New York and would probably take the train down to Norfolk and rent a car.
We're not one percenters, but we don't need to budget, either. We're in our late 60s
Sell me on Virginia Beach, please! Best hotel, best restaurant for a romantic anniversary dinner. And anything else you can think of.
Thank you!

We agree with Klamath Falls, Oregon the Cavalier Hotel is a great choice if the price is right for you. We vote you should go for it! :) We too didn't stay but went for drinks only. The rest of the hotels in town are average at best. Have you thought about Williamsburg and then driving to Yorktown (on the water).

Family (me, wife, two middle schoolers) will be staying in Williamsburg for a week in mid August. We’d like to make a day trip over to Virginia Beach. Any tips on which beach to visit, parking, attractions, etc. since we won’t have a hotel to use as a base? Any visitor center or restrooms with showers to get the sand off?
Written August 1, 2022
According to the Virginian Pilot newspaper, four public shower stalls opened June 2022 on 2nd Street next to the boardwalk.

Hi, going to take family to VA Beach for the first time (wife, 15 & 11 yr. sons) next month March 2022, but not sure where to stay North, West or South side of VA beach? Don't want to be by bars but in walking distance to the boardwalk and restaurants. Also, would like to have an ocean view if possible. Thinking of the Hampton or Holiday Inn because they offer free breakfast. Thanks to any information

Good Evening, I am planning on driving the family (wife, 15 yr and 11 yr. old sons) for the first time to VA Beach and not sure which side to stay on North, West or South side? We don't want to be by bars but would like to have restaurants in walking distance. Not sure where the boardwalk is that I've been hearing about. Would like an ocean view as well. Thinking of the Hampton or Holiday Inn that offers free breakfast as well. Any information would be great. Don't want to stay in a shady part of town either. Thanks!

Boardwalk starts at the Marriott to the north and ends three miles south at Owl Creek. It is cement, not a traditional “board”. Accessible every block.
You should post your inquiry about where to stay on the Virginia Beach message board here on TA.

I use a battery operated hoveround wheelchair and a rolator to get around. Will I be able to enjoy the beach with my family off of the boardwalk; I am going to be there between March 21st through 26th, our spring break.

We drove on the boardwalk to see the Christmas light display. I’m sure you could use your wheelchair on this if it was allowed. Skateboarding etc are not allowed. We stayed in the doubletree and saw the beach from our window!! You could hear the ocean too! Have a great time!
