About
We have been operating since 1996 as a professional guided kayak tour company in Virginia Beach. Dolphin Kayaking Tours are the most exciting "thing to do in Virginia Beach". Our 2.5 hour guided Kayak Dolphin Tours start in April and continue through October, where you can experience wild Dolphins sometimes up close and personal. Our most exciting kayak adventure launching through the surf into the Atlantic Ocean where we have the greatest chance of seeing dolphins. We also launch this trip from The Chesapeake Bay for those who prefer a calmer launch experience to see the Dolphins, less chance of seeing them. The Dolphin Calm Water trip with the least chance of seeing Dolphins is onto an inland bay in First Landing State Park, much like a lake. We have built an excellent reputation among local guests and visitors alike. We also kayak in The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, The Dismal Swamp and our Sunset tour in the beautiful Norfolk Botanical Gardens. We provide all the gear.

My wife surprised me with a Sunset Kayak Tour of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens for our 31st Anniversary! Even though NBG is one of our favorite places and we have been there many times before, Adam, our Tour Guide for Kayak Nature Tours, Ltd., made it a novel and breathtaking experience. Our group was small enough to feel close and to hear the comments and insights Adam provided through his experience in this unique estuary environment where the saltwater of the lower Chesapeake Bay meets the fresh of the Little Creek. The evening was the perfect time to go since the wildlife of the Gardens and the Creek were coming in to roost (flocks of cormorants and ducks with smaller groupings of Osprey and Great Blue Herons). Adam described the ecological web for us as well as gave a historical backdrop of this unique hidden sanctuary that exists in the midst of suburban, military and commercial aviation development. We were able to see parts of the NBG we had never seen before and from a whole different perspective. We are no newcomers to kayaking and found the equipment provided to be well up to the task and comfortable. We had several with us who were newer to this form of water excursion and mastered in quickly under Adam's tutelage.

I saw further demonstration of this company's commitment to their mission and customers when I realized getting home that I had forgotten my cell phone in my life jacket! In a panic I called and left a message at Kayak Nature Tours fearing it would be days before I would hear back. Amazingly the next morning at 0800 I heard from Randy that not only did he have my phone but would (and did!) deliver it to me that morning despite my being in Hampton, miles and a very unpredictable tunnel away. I wholeheartedly recommend this company and am looking forward to trying some of their other excursions.

John, thanks for the wonderful review and all the details. It is our goal is to be the best at what we do, we greatly appreciate it when our guests let us know. We know the lost phone panic and were glad we could return it so quickly. Randy & Bonita

I went solo for the dolphin kayak experience , which involved kayaking in a very calm Chesapeake Bay for about 2.5 hours. I am 61 yrs old and an active person and experienced at lake kayaking, and it was just the right comfort level for my ability. The owner Randy was very thorough in getting my information and in sharing info at the booking time. There were about 10 people in our group and 2 really great young men as our guides. I took the 12 pm booking time because the 9:00 am was full. There were maybe 6 or seven dolphins that came fairly close after about 1.5. hours, but I was a little disappointed that we did not see more. I think the morning time would have been better. Next time, I will book on the first day I arrive so I can get the time I want. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I can't say enough about the great guides and the company.

Our Kayak Dolphin Adventure on First Landing Beach was a fun experience! The guides are polite, patient, and relaxed. It was exhilarating to be on the water and see the local fauna up close. You are free to go at your own pace, explore at your leisure and comfort level, and we felt very safe the entire time. The tour is moderately priced and of great value in my opinion, with rentals included. I definitely see this as a must-do for tourists, especially if travelling as a family or group of friends. For locals, this is just a regular daily occurrence, swimming with the dolphins that pass through the Bay.

We all had a great time on our tour with John! Our group ranged in age from 3 years to late 60s. We went from the First Landing State Park and the water was calm (no one tipped or fell out) and shallow during our low tide trip (couple feet deep, mostly). We saw lots of stingrays, fish, and birds (ospreys, bald eagles, and egrets). Our guide was patient, knowledgeable, and appealed to all our group’s ages and abilities. We highly recommend this on a trip to VA Beach, or for locals! (Our family has been coming to the North End for a bit 60 years.)

Your description of First Landing State Park was spot on, glad you saw so much wildlife on your trip and that all your ages were happy with the experience. John is an awesome team member, we are very fortunate to have him. Thanks for taking the time to give us such wonderful review. Looking forward to to seeing you again on the water. The KNT Team!

John was our tour guide and he was awesome. Really nice guy and he gave our group a great tour and was very knowledgeable of the wildlife / birds in the area. I'm giving only 3 (average), as it's not the tour I signed up and paid for. Our original tour was cancelled because of weather. I booked a tour "Kayaking with Dolphins" and we (3 people) were really looking forward to it. Certainly wasn't upset when the tour was cancelled because of the weather, safety first. Randy, the owner, rebooked us on another tour, which I just assumed would be the same. It was not! Didn't think to ask that question when I agreed to the alternative date/time. I think something should of been said. It was a nice tour, and again, John was great, just not the tour we booked or expected. Just be aware and ask should you book this company and have to change dates due to weather....

Linda, We are sorry for any confusion about which kayaking trip you signed up for. We would never switch a guest from the trip they signed up for to a different trip location without their express permission. Our records show that you registered online for the First Landing State Park trip, not the dolphin trip. If you check your email confirmation you will see it is for the First Landing State Park trip where we rarely see Dolphins. Occasionally we do find that guests are so excited about kayaking with the Dolphins they do not realize that we do not see Dolphins on some of our kayaking trips. For anyone considering a kayaking trip with us, please check to confirm you are signing up for the correct date, time, and trip location you really want. It is exciting visiting Virginia Beach and especially going kayaking in our beautiful area. We thank you for your business and are sorry for any confusion. The KNT Team!

Definitely would recommend! I’ve never been kayaking and had a great time and never got too tired. The guides were really nice and great about letting everyone go at their own pace. Saw plenty of dolphins, but even without those it was fun and would definitely recommend. I got a double with my mom and it was a great bonding experience, but only if you’re a good communicator. It’s definitely physical, so I wouldn’t recommend if you’re unable to exercise, but I never work out and I was having a great time. It’s also very relaxing to take a break and stick your feet in the water for a bit

Great family fun! Seeing dolphins swim is so cool! We took tandem kayaks with our 9&10 year old sons. Within a few minutes we saw about 5 dolphins and then followed them down the beach for the majority of the trip. Our trip did involve a bit of paddling to get close to the dolphins but it was great fun! Well worth the money!

Absolutely a must do. As a local we try to try enjoy all the adventures of the area. We kayaked around the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. As a member of the NBG we try to go as often as possible. It's beautiful, peaceful and one of our favorite places in Virginia Beach/Norfolk. We did the Kayaking to go through the gardens from a different view. Well worth it!! We loved every moment.

We did the Northwest River, Great Dismal Swamp tour on 9 April 22, and it was just great! Randy and Bonita are incredibly friendly and professional. The kayaks are in great shape, too. They an efficient but informative overview about how to adjust the kayak, sit, and paddle, then we were off. It was a sunny spring day and the river was gorgeous. Lots of unexpected flowers and colors. We'd do it again in a heartbeat.
