We visited the refuge on July 4, 2016, and it was delightfully quiet and uncrowded and undeveloped. We saw a nest of osprey on the way in. On the boardwalk to the beach we saw a turtle (but not a loggerhead), a rabbit, various birds,...More

Plenty of wildlife to see when exploring here and a nice beach to enjoy the ocean and fishing, as well. Wish I had more time to explore because I heard there are wild horses you can see

When we went, we saw no birds at all, so we were really disappointed. The area is just beautiful and peaceful and very clean. Will try again.

Stopped here with my wife accidentally and loved it! The small visitor center has some really nice specimens that both children and adults would enjoy. The marsh trails were nice but the walk along the beach is a must! We saw well over 40 Brown...More

Awesome place with all kinds of wildlife to be seen. Walk or ride bikes to the Washwoods village (8.2 miles from the visitor center).

This little gem is worth the trip if you are a birder. Access is restricted art times in order to protect migratory populations.

I went here alone to check out the scenery and was surprised at how nice it was to hike here and on the beach. It's quiet, serene and beautiful.

A gem in Southern Virginia Beach. Enjoy a walk through nature and pure silence. Combination of ocean, beach, marshlands, etc.

This is a rare jewel in a popular location. At the very end of Sandpiper Road you find the gateway to a pleasant experience in wildlife watching. Whether it is migratory birds, bear, deer or whatever it can be seen here. A short walk over...More

I hate snakes big time. The women at the visitors center said they are out and about but that they normally stay away from people. We took the one trail by the bay and it was high grass on both sides with a gravel path. I... More

I have 2 children 4 and 7 when we went there and they loved it! They were content with just seeing a blue heron and a couple turtles.😊
