The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

i've seen three Shakespeare productions at this theater and each one was excellent. The company makes the plays very accessible, even to people who have never seen a Shakespeare play before. i was especially impressed by the music this time. Highly recommended for all.

This year we saw Bloody bloody Andrew Jackson which was a raucous and enjoyable show with a little bit of history included. Well put together and staged well, first half was excellant , second half a little slower. But put on by passionate actors who all do a great job. Will be there again on our next trip for sure.

We are frequent theater goers, who are used to polished professional productions. We didn't know what to expect here in Stauton. Although the production of Twelth Night and Henry VI part two, were not polished big productions like you might find in Ashland Oregon or at the Folgers in DC, they were definitely professional and authentic. With the lights on,... More

Amazing, beautiful venue--only recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre worldwide, and here it is in Staunton, VA. Fine selection of Shakespearean and other works in an intimate setting. Friendly service at the box office--be she to discuss your seating preferences. We prefer seating on the second level for the view... seats on stage (yes, on stage) allow for the most interaction.... We were in town for an engagement dinner on Sunday evening. Was staying at the Holiday Inn (nice place too) and woke up with a whole day to explore the area. Got on Travel Advisor and saw this as the #1 thing to do in the area. Check their schedule and they had a 2:00PM show of Bloody Bloody Andrew... More

We pulled into town and saw there was a performance at 2 pm on Sunday. So we walked in and purchased tickets and saw a wonderful play. We enjoyed the preshow and intermission entertainment also. The cast was very engaging. One can even elect to sit up onstage if you wish. My daughter used to enjoy attending their plays when... More

A much loved school trip. Excellent theatre and staging. Will would be proud. The school takes a party of kids and teacher and parents, who gladly chaperone. So much to see and do, hard to fit it in from Friday through Monday. We stay the Stonewalling Jackson hotel and conference center next door. We eat at Baja Bean, The Cranberry,... More

I cannot praise The American Shakespeare Theatre enough. We drive from NY for this and its worth the trip! They are so talented and even if you have never read or heard of or had an interest in Shakespeare then even you will be in for a treat! We love to sit in row c. Make sure you don't miss... More
