The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

You will enjoy the plays even if you are not a Shakespeare freak. It is fun to be entertained by the actors so that the performance is as entertaining as the play itself.

Backstage tour was absolutely great. Info on history, costume design, rehearsals, stage trap doors, makeup etc. Was all covered. Reasonable price as well.

Great venue, unique experience and such talented performers. Worth grabbing some cliff notes on a show prior to watching as the authentic Shakespearean can get confusing at times. If you are in Staunton a must do!

We have been there twice, taking visiting family members both times. We all very much enjoyed the venue, the plays, the cast and the whole experience. The staff and the cast are very friendly. Beverages are available before the performance and at intermission. Parking at a Staunton municipal garage is just around the corner. We will definitely be going again.

We didn't know about this theater until just before our arrival...what a lucky find! This little theater is amazing...not a bad seat in the house. We saw the Merchant of Venice and the actors couldn't have been better. They were obviously having fun...and it was infectious. The music, the acting, the atmosphere...try it and you won't be disappointed.

I've seen about 10 plays here and every single one has been incredible, from Shakespeare originals to more modern plays. The theater itself is beautiful, a full replica of the Globe Theater, and the actors are all incredibly talented. Early in a show's run, you can catch a show as "Pay What You Will" performances, where you don't pay anything... More

What a wonderful theatre! The show was very family friendly and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat anywhere. We look forward to making this show an annual tradition.

We have now attended 2 performances at this theater (driving 2.5 hrs each way to do so) and heartily recommend it. The theater itself is awesome and I personally find the cast quite talented. I like the intimacy of the performance and how the lights stay on just as they did in Shakespeare's time. For those who haven't attended before,... More
