The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

to Washington DC or Staunton and want to see a troupe of actors grab Shakespeare's work with both hands and make it fierce and funny and immediate, pick Staunton. We've seen many a Shakespeare play in DC and around the US; one of the least ponderous and most lived-in performances was in Staunton. It certainly was the best Twelfth Night.... More

This was my second experience at American Shakespeare Center in the last month. The first on a stopover in Staunton was a fine fun rendition of Twelfth Night and this time it was the energetic and interesting Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The cast and the Shakespeare-oriented style of the show is most compelling and does not fail to delight the... More

I did a tour of the theater at 2 pm. It was interesting to learn more about the acting company and see backstage. I went to a performance of King Lear, which was excellent. The theater is small so you're close to the action. There are even seats on the stage for those who are braver than I. The company... More

If you love Shakespeare or want to give him a try (oh, please do!), this gorgeous, comfortable, and cozy indoor Blackfriars Theatre is the place to go. It was superb theatre, plus lots of fun!

Twelfth Night is energetic, hilarious, engaging and vastly entertaining. The cast was rollicking and the venue (a reproduction of Shakespeare's indoor theater) was unique, beautiful and intimate. You can even sit onstage if you are courageous enough. Best show we've seen in years. Get thee to the American Shakespeare Center forthwith!

Great cast. Great interpretation of the play (even I understood most of the lines this time). Some nice music before the play and during interlude. The theater, fashioned after the original Blackfriars Theater in London, is a treasure and something to be seen in its own right.

This was great performance in a cool venue by a remarkably versatile and talented cast. It was well worth the trip to Staunton.

We had heard many great things about this theater and were SO disappointed when we finally got to attend. In trying to recreate an authentic Elizabethan experience, there is no amplification here. For the hearing impaired, this is a major drawback. Also, most seating is wood benches only. For those with arthritis, the primitive seating quickly becomes uncomfortable. The evening's... More

The players work very hard in these productions--there is no coasting on their part. I attend mostly plays by Shakespeare for they are incomparable. They do a wonderful Christmas Carol in the season which only rivaled, in my opinion, by the production at Ford's Theater in D.C.

My wife and I usually attend two shows a year and it is a treat every time we come. There is no other form of entertainment like it in the Shenandoah Valley. The acting is consistently superb and the atmosphere is fun even when they put on a serious performance.
