The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We saw "Twelfth Night" recently, and this production was both true to the text and wildly accessible and funny. For starters, the live music before the show is performed by the super talented actors themselves, and concluded with an incredibly awesome and humorous mashup of "Ain't No Sunshine/Oops I Did It Again." So yeah, not bound by stodgy textbook interpretation.... More

This theatre is fantastic! Having seen Shakespeare performed in Stratford-upon-Avon, my expectations were high. I was confused by the production of Twelfth. Night. I thought the mix of period costumes was distracting. The actors were amazing though and I loved the after-performance sit down talk with the actors. Next time I will check to be sure they are wearing period... More

Two separate shows at two separate times and both were excellent. Sat below for one and above for another, once again, excellent as there is really not a bad seat in the house. There are some but not where we sat...It is pretty cold in there so bundle up. Actors and employees were pheonmenal. Can find free parking around the... More

Whether you are a fan of Shamespeare or not, this is a must-visit venue for live performing arts. The actors are world-class with great resumes. There are a number of non-Shakespeare plays in addition to the huge itinerary of traditional Shakespeare fare. "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" (hilarious musical biography) and "Scrooge" (not to be missed Christmas production) come to mind.... More

An excellent production of King Lear. Well staged, wonderfully acted. A difficult play but a production that brought us close to tears in the final scenes as Lear struggles with his grief and failures.

We've only been to see two plays so far but both have been fantastic-- well worth the drive from DC and a night over! The cast is especially good at bringing out the humor and interaction in the plays.

Plays, simply and beautifully done, in a simple and beautiful space. The casts are usually very strong and the music very good. I wish they'd put the musicians onstage instead of the inaudible balcony location.

We saw "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson". It was entertaining and funny. Wasn't quite what I expected but for the price, it was a nice. The cast was good and the storyline was ok. I enjoyed the first half far more than the second.

We saw two plays here. The troupe is extremely talented and versatile. The Twelfth Night was outstanding! Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson predated Hamilton and was great for all three music and the skills of the performers. But it's not Shakespeare. But it is fun.

This was our first visit and we are already planning a return trip. The entire staff and cast was professional and friendly. We enjoyed the music prior to the show and the performance. Looking forward to our next trip.
