Charming Neighborhood Bar... In The Mountains
Oct 2019
While waiting for our dinner reservations at the nearby Three Blacksmiths, we stopped into Francis for a cocktail. I’ve been to this building many times, to eat at Thornton River Grill or the RPK, but I’ve never stopped in for cocktails and what a treat this was! Their menu is not only very affordable, especially the “big city” mixes they’re doing with these perfectly concocted cocktails… but the service, the quaint venue and the items listed on the menu were excellent! A definite “must do” for anyone who enjoys a unique cocktail!

Met friends at Francis Bar last night for a pleasant interlude in a busy weekend. The place was buzzing! Great service from Jenny and a yummy pizza from RPK, Definitely returning.

Too busy to serve non-locals
May 2018 • Couples
Came in on a semi-busy night, but the place is so small and had three employees we assumed it would be as bad as it was. Sat down and selected drinks from the menu, then waited, and waited, and waited. After about 15 minutes an employee told us she'd be right over after we flagged her down. Then some locals (assuming because the employees knew them well) walked in and were served before us. That was all I needed to know.

Service and drinks were great and the bar had a really cool, laid back atmosphere.

My husband and I had booked a stay at Skyland lodge in Shenandoah National Park and found out that the lodge has been snowed in. As we were driving through Sperryville we had no service and we stumbled upon Francis so we decided to stop to use the WiFi. Thanks goodness we did! Mia was super helpful in helping us find a place to stay and things to do since Skyline drive in Shenandoah was closed! The old fashion is delicious and the company was even better! If we come back through here we will definitely stop in again!

A gem!
Sep 2018 • Couples
This small (tiny!) bar is located right in the heart of Sperryville adjoining the local market, pizza shop and the Thornton River Grill. (It serves as the bar for the TRG.) We stopped here a couple times during our stay in the area and were wowed with the service provided by the affable and knowledgable Mia. She made the best drinks, had thorough information on the wines served, knew the area like the back of her hand, was on a first name basis with most everyone who entered, and even made phone calls for us for restaurants as we had no cell service. She is a gem and should be treasured!

From Bad to Worse

I like this place and think it is a great addition to the local restaurant scene. BUT, tonight we went there planning to have some drinks and light food. The two bartenders were busily running around and it took a few minutes to get their attention to order a drink. One passed us by to buss a table while the other was making one of their special drinks. We finally got to place a drink order, a beer for me and wine for my friend. As we were served we asked for the food menu only to be told that "sorry they close at 8PM" it was 7:55 and here we were with fresh drinks and the place was closed. (it's Sunday night on a three day weekend, but that is another story) If they told us they were closing we would never have ordered a drink. So we were stuck with drinks, no food and having to decide where we could go for something to eat. We finished our drinks while they busily cleaned around us, paid the tab and tried to leave only to find the scowling woman in the store had padlocked the door. (not sure, but I think that is a violation of fire regulations) She said in a not so nice way, use the back door. As we left we passed three different groups of patrons heading in to drink or eat. I know the bartenders don't set the hours, but they could have told us before we ordered that they were closing. The woman in the store area was not nice, acted like we were an affront to her space by just being there. I like this place and will be back, but if this was my first visit I would never darken their door again. We drove to Flint Hill and had food at the Griffin Tavern. While we were there two of the groups we passed leaving Francis came in with similar stories. Get it together folks.

Great place for a drink
Dec 2017 • Friends
This is the bar associated with Thornton River Grill and Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen, and has become The Place to have a drink in Rappahannock County. It's a friendly little place to stop in for a drink and a chat. The drinks are a delight: innovative new creations or classic cocktails reinvented with herbal infusions. The bar food menu is delicious and a perfect accompaniment to the drinks. And love the staff...

Finally - a great place to have a drink (other than beer) in Sperryville
May 2017 • Friends
Welcome Francis Bar! Such a great addition to the Sperryville lineup which seems to be growing every weekend. As part of the Thornton River collage of pizza place, restaurant, and corner store, Francis Bar serves amazing one-of-a-kind cocktails that are completely delicious and innovative. Dare I say healthy too with the herbs and other alchemistic additions? Love the decor and the location is perfect. Only drawbacks are the acoustics are quite high and the bright shining lights from the corner store attached to it are glaring - hopefully the owners will renovate that and create a more chic store to match Francis Bar so it's a seamless transition.
