I am, by no means, a climbing expert. However, my 13 year old son and I decided to try this out one weekday before school started. What a pleasant surprise!
We were greeted warmly and introduced to the facility. On your first visit, you are required to complete a training session with one of the guides. Since it was a weekday, this was a one on one session for us, which was great. After that, you are free to enjoy this impressive facility. All necessary equipment is available for rent. I would suggest some type of hand protection. I am not sure what they will allow, but taping or something to protect from blisters/skin tears would be nice. You will get more of a workout than you realize, so be prepared! There are options for joining River Rock like you would your local gym if you plan to go on a regular basis. For me, I see this as an occasional fun activity, but if climbing is "your thing", you may want to join. Have fun!

We took our extended family here over the 4th of July weekend. This place is professionally operated. First time visitors must sign waivers, be photographed, and take a tour of the facility. Then a trained staff member watched as each visitor does a short practice climb in a harness. Only then are you turned loose to explore on your own.
The center offers an array of climbing courses at every level of competence.
Our climbing group ranged in age from 6 -17 years. All of them had a great time while proud parents snapped photos.

River Rock provides some very top quality routes that make for an experience that will delight beginner to more advanced climbers. There are constantly new top-rope & bouldering routes every few weeks and they provide a lot of good classes from yoga to beginner and advanced climbing techniques. A very knowledgeable team of employees who help create a fun atmosphere.

There's an excellent variety of climbing here, with plenty of roped and bouldering routes at all grades of difficulty. It's both family friendly and well worth a lengthy visit for an experienced climber. Friendly staff and awesome location, too!

Spent a cold rainy spring break day here with our kids on a recent visit to Roanoke. Unique location with some great climbing walls. Instruction for my teens was perfect before letting them climb. They were challenged and safe. Had wonderful lunch in Tavern next door then back for more climbing with all day pass. Kids were tired and had a fun time all at reasonable price.

I'm not an expert rock climber, but have done some wall climbing for fun. This location and these walls area perfect for all skill levels. The orientation is helpful as a reminder of safety and good practice. The equipment felt very well maintained and we had a fun afternoon of climbing (though we all did feel a bit sore the following day!)

Brought my daughter and her friend here for her birthday outing. They had an absolute blast. Stayed for a couple hours and they had a ball climbing. I would definitely recommend this place to families. Friendly, upbeat staff was a bonus as well.

I've been a member here for over a year and go a few times a week. It's great! The bouldering and top rope areas are both sizable, and they change out the holds often to keep things interesting.
The staff is always helpful and engaging. It's definitely not cheap, but their pricing is comparable to other climbing gyms I've been to; it's an expensive activity. Their monthly membership fee is just like being a member at a gym, so it's not bad at all.
I would (frequently do) recommend this place to anybody in Roanoke who is looking for something to do. It's great for individuals, groups, and families. They have birthday parties all the time, and I don't think I've ever seen any kids not having a great time.

Our 8 yr old daughter has always enjoyed climbing...we finally realized we had a climbing gym here and she loves it! Great gym with plenty to do. Staff are all very helpful and friendly. Homeschool day once a month is affordable and good to get the kids together doing something active.
