Good workout

Thought we were going for an easier hike than what we ended up with but it was a good workout nonetheless.

This isn't my favorite hike in the Roanoke Valley but it's a great workout to the top with a nice view. The parking lot is small and is located in a residential area, so be careful when you drive, you pass a lot people's homes.

Nice easy hike with a few options to extend your walk. One good view at Buzzard's Roost. Maps at the start. Little hard to find. The entrance looks like a driveway between two houses. Trails are in good shape last I went.

I've done the Buzzards Rock hike several times, it's a nice moderate hike, not many views on the way up but a pretty decent one at the end. Like it because it's so close to town and can be done in a relatively short amount of time and at the last minute.

Hiked all the trails. Nice preserve right in the middle of the city. The preserve trails are well kept on the end near the outlook, not so much on the other end. The outlook is fine, but nothing special--you look down on the tops of factories and warehouses.

This is a nice hike to a beautiful view. I didn't take my dogs because the trail typically isn't very wide and I don't want to scare other hikers with my boys, even though they would be fine. A nice hidden treasure.

Enjoyable, not-too-strenuous hike at a beautiful local site! Buzzard's Rock (1.9 miles up) offers a fun activity - Pack a lunch and enjoy a nice view of the valley! Running streams along the way provide a cool drink if you bring your dog. Different seasons provide different views, but it is always a treat to visit this relatively short and... More

Though the trails on Read Mountain are becoming a little more well-known, it is still a place you can hike if you're looking for something to do with friends or need a little alone time. When you reach Buzzard's Rock, there are plenty of spaces to sit and soak up the peace and quiet. I highly recommend this any time... More

The preserve entrance looks like a driveway between two houses in a neighborhood. The listed address on Crumpacker will get you there. The Buzzard's Rock trail is 1.9 miles one-way. Personally I would rate the trail a 2 out of 5 there is a 880 foot elevation change. The trail is ascending the entire 1.9 miles. The signage lists the... More

This is the ONE place you should come to hike. Not a ton of parking but this is a trail system. Its not just one. Simple 30 minute romantic hike, or a three hour and 5 mile trek, that is up to you. This one is good for kids (bring snacks) and its perfect for couples or friends. Lots of... More
