About
The Children’s Museum of Virginia is a place where families and caregivers with children ages 1-11 are encouraged to imagine, explore, and discover together through play. Children step inside a world where bubbles grow bigger than they are, where the forces of energy electrify and spark their imagination, where they can be a farmer, a banker, a scientist, a stargazer and more.

This place... Where do I even start? These closing time are awful, these employees aren't even taking their jobs seriously when it comes to these stuff, this is a true place when it comes to having fun, they don't even want people here, this is just... I'm mad and dissatisfied, I really think this place should have better closing times, and this place isn't even true to themselves, they say they are open at displayed times, then just close legally without warning people, I traveled 5-6 hours with my family, spent too much money on gas, and this is what we deserve? This place is too rude to people, just true torture

5-year-old summary: "Everything here is locked up."

We go to children's museums all over the US. This one was relatively expensive, but I'm fine paying that for a good day of engaged learning with my kids. Unfortunately, this museum had little that actually engaged the kids in their learning. Rather, it has lots of objects behind plexiglass that the kids can't touch, demonstrations where the kid pushes a button and watches something happen. For example, there is a play bank, but all of the drawers that represent deposit boxes, etc., have plexiglass over them so you can just see what's in them, but not do anything with it. Same with the train area. They have a huge model train exhibit, but you mostly just look at trains in cases. (There is a small area with wooden train track, but it's not much.) There's a cargo port area that has a crane that moves small shipping containers. But all you do is push a button and watch each crane move the same container back and forth. The kids can't create stacks of containers, move things around, etc. Just watch two cranes each move a single container back and forth. The physics area that shows physics principles like leverage and fluid dynamics is a little bit better, but still way too controlled with pre-determined lessons rather than exploratory play. Kids are forgiving, so they run to the next thing when they realize that there's nothing to actually *do* yourself, just stuff to look at. But eventually my 5-year-old had been disappointed enough times by not being able to actually play, pretend, build, etc. that he came to me and said "Dad, everything here is locked up."

The good children's museums we have visited have lots of places where the kids play, build, explore, make-believe, etc. They learn through actual engagement. They actually use levers or pulleys with materials that they can handle. They build arches with big foam blocks to learn how an arch works. They take on various pretend roles, etc. This museum offers very little of that.

We left disappointed (and me more than a bit frustrated) by how little there was here for kid to actually do.

(I will say, the staff was very friendly and they seemed to care about it being a welcoming place. I certainly don't place the blame for the restrictive design of the exhibits on them.)

Great hands on things for young children. Can't give snacks or eat inside. Minus that it had so much to do. My 15 month old loved the open space.

We had my daughter's 6th birthday party there and it was a huge hit with the kids. With all of the interactive exhitis, displays, educational information, and fun stuff to climb on it is a must see!

So, took the family to Children's Museum for 4th of July Weekend 2019. My 5-year-old was so excited to go. When we go there, Margaret at the front desk was so rude that my child cried because she thought we got in trouble. My kids were bummed out for the rest of the day. Lots to do, but because the staff was so unfriendly we couldn't enjoy it. My family was bringing in more kids after lunch (they are from out of town) and we told them not to come because we were having such a bad time. My kids love the bubble play area, but a staff member was cleaning out the bubbles and poured the solution on the floor. My child slipped several times because of this. Also, a staff member was sanitizing the fishing boat and scolded several kids for continuing to play while she was cleaning, it was 4:00 and the museum doesn't close until 5:00. We've had a membership before, but decided against renewing due to this poor experience. It's a shame, we had family in town and it was really a poor showing for the museum and the city of Portsmouth. Doubt we will ever be back.

This is a great museum for children of all ages! Lots of interactive features to enjoy & history lessons to explore. I would recommend this attraction to any family with children to visit while in the Hampton Roads Area.

While visiting family in Virginia I took my toddler to the museum. It was a little pricey but once we got inside it was well worth it. We could have spent days there. There was so much to do and see I was a child in a candy shop along with my toddler. To this day he talks about the food store where he picked his food and rang it up at the cash register, he talks about the trains and different vehicles, the bubbles and more. It was an amazing experiance and perfect way to wrap up a family vacation in beautiful Virginia. A great place for children of all ages! We will absolutely visit the museum again next time we are in Virginia!!

My family joined last week and we found many exhibits were broken, or not working. The motorcycle that children sit on needs to be thrown in the trash. It was broken down, worn out, nothing worked, and it was filthy. The fire truck had switches that do not work. The fire hoses only one worked. In the grocery store the egg exhibit did not work, no tomatoes or beans to pick off the vine. In the vet section the animals were dirty, cage latches do not work and med items was missing. Up stairs the in the theater the costumes and puppets were dirty and many missing. We don't mine paying for a yearly admission, but at least keep the exhibits clean and stocked. We know some children take things, but they should have replacements for the items taken. We could name more broken or damaged exhibits, but we hope the staff and leadership will take a closer look in the future. Gene R
