My wife and I stopped by here on a recent trip to Paint Bank. It was neat to see all the trout being "groomed" for release the streams of Western VA. We were very disappointed in that there were no signs explaining the details of the process or even that the fish were trout. It would be so much more interesting if you could learn the steps in the growth process and release. Different cement troughs held the different stages in the development process. It appeared that there was one that could be almost ready for release. We were there on a Sunday and there was no one around to answer questions. This may not be true on weekdays however.

Very neat place to stop and spend a few minutes. We were lucky enough to go inside to look around as well. They are doing a great job.

We were staying at the Depot Lodge for the weekend and wanted to stop in and see the Hatchery! We pulled in with no other cars in the parking lot. You can just walk around if you want, but I HIGHLY recommend talking to Grayson! He is extremely knowledgable about not only this hatchery, but also other state hatcheries and state projects. The Hatchery itself has a neat bit of history associated with it, as it was built in (I think he said) the fifties. He can tell you all the history and more! We stayed for over an hour talking with him and seeing all the different sizes and types of trout, but you could see it in about 30 minutes.

spent a couple of hours here checking out the hatchery tanks and speaking with the guys operating the hatchery. We walked into the office and interrupted four friendly guys who were happy to speak with us and educate us on not only the hatchery but also state ecosystem issues/ concerns, fishing, hunting and other related topics. Could have stayed much longer, but did not want to risk over staying our welcome. I recommend stopping in!
