Can recommend doing a half day cycle on the Twin Coast trail and renting bikes half way from Tipene in Kaikohe . He will pick up cycles at the trail end in Horeke and bring you back to Kaikohe. The service is friendly , the bikes were excellent and the trail from Kaikohe to Horeke was wonderfully scenic and surpassed our expectations. Great half day ride

We rode the 2 day Twin Coast Cycle Trail on e-bikes and had a wonderful time. The bikes were excellent and we received great advice for the best experience. On the second day we ran a flat tire and Tipene scooted all the way out to fix the bike in no time.

When we met Tipene at the start we knew we were in for a good time. He set us up with good bikes some local history and tales of how to behave nicely or ‘ the aunties’ will sort you out. What a laugh he is. The shuttle drivers Rob and Tamate picked us up after each day and they were great too.
We went from Kaikohe east to Opua on day one. It was fairly easy and the next day we went to the other coast and finished at Horeke. That was much prettier, more undulating and with really good signage. There was a bonus stop at a cute railway station cafe on the way and another opportunity for fresh scones and home made lemonade at a gorgeous stop at Snow’s farm .

Great trip – I have been recommending it to my friends.
Easy to book online. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We use e-bikes at home so decided to do the same here. The e-bikes were nearly new Avanti bikes, very comfortable and easy to adjust, perfect for the type of trail.
If you are only 1 day, I recommend doing Kaikohe to Horeke – more beautiful, and more interesting biking, and there are more information panels.
I was worried about some of the trail being Grade 3. I should have looked up what that means. There is a section which is steep, but the trail is wide and smooth – I mostly bike around town but I had no problem at all.
I found the diagram on the website showing the route confusing– the difference between looking at the diagram and a map. So, if anyone else was confused, travelling from Kaikohe to Horeke you are biking WEST towards the Hokianga. The diagram shows the Hokianga on the right side of page, rather than the left.

We did the Kaikohe to Horeke Trail, and had a great day. The bikes were in good condition and comfortable. Great people to deal with - we had a date change due to weather and it was no problem. Tipene and the team were very helpful (and chatty). The trail was varied and interesting, with the cafe at Snow's Farm very timely. Be aware if you're looking for a city cafe, you'll be disappointed, but the food and the service are well worth it all the same. Great spot beside the river and under a large tree if its too sunny or raining.

Thank you for using us to ride the trail - yes Snows Farm cafe is entirely different to something you would find in a big city - but very 'Northland' with fresh, homegrown and home-cooked food!

We recently used the shuttle service to pick us up from each end of the twin coast cycle trail. I received helpful advice, easy booking and payment. Our driver Rob was punctual and obliging, he shared his local knowledge of the area on the journeys which added to our overall positive experience. Thank you Top Trail!

We hired E bikes and they were in good condition and obviously well maintained. Tipene and Tamati were great to deal with and full of fun as well as giving us all important details about the trail. We received specific instructions about pick up times by the shuttle and they were well on time.
Also helpful to get informstion about places on the trail to have coffee and lunch.
Thanks guys. We had a fantastic time

Excellent hire ebikes, friendly service. We rode the trail in both directions from Kaikohe, andboth dayswere great, particularly the ride by the river between Okaihau and Horeke. Having ebikes with disc brakes meant we couldride down thw steep zigzag rather than get off and walk as the signs suggested.

We also love the trail - and think both directions have their merits - yes it is possible to stay on board your bikes on the zig-zag but needs to be done with caution! Thanks for taking the time to review Anika

We arranged bike hire and shuttles from Top Trail to enable us to ride the trail from Kaikohe to Kawakawa on day one and to the Hokianga Harbour on day two. We found the pre trip enquiry and booking process to be efficient and helpful.
Unfortunately a problem with our car meant we were late to start on day one. Tipene at Top Trail was very sympathetic and at no extra cost upgraded us to ebikes which enabled us to complete the trail easily on time for our shuttle.
We really appreciated his response to our problem, its actions and service like this that make Kiwi tourism companies stand out.

We had a brilliant day out biking Kaikohe to Mangamu Mission. Highly recommended day trip. Started off with the exceptionally helpful, funny and talented Tipene at the bike hire shop and completed by the knowledgeable driver on the shuttle back imparting local interesting information. The bike track itself is well worth it, stunning, varied and interesting scenery as well as a well maintained track with a steep descents, meandering parts, small grunts. Highlight of our short trip to the winterless north.

Hi Ray, We will be arriving on November 13, 2015 from our Celebrity cruise ship and will be in your area from 9AM to 6PM. Your bike rental so see Kaikohe to Okaihua sounds great. So does our time schedule work with this trip? How would we get to your bike rental place? If we want to book this ahead of time can we do that. What happens if it then turns out to be a bad weather day...Is there a refund since we will not be back there? We are a group of 4 adults. Thanks. Therese

Hi Therese
many thanks for your enquiry. I am already committed to two tours for passengers off the Celebrity Solstice when she is in the Bay of Islands on that day.
I do not know whether they have sold all the available seats on the tours yet so would suggest that you contact the onshore activities people to see if you can reserve 4 seats.
Warm regards
Ray Clarke Top Trail Hire & Tours Ltd.
