We visited the Forest with a tour that was offered by our cruise line. We had a very interesting guide that took us on the tour as we walked on the boardwalk to view the kauri trees and other vegetation in the area. We were there for about 45 minutes on the tour. If you visit, you don’t need a tour since there are placards along the boardwalk.

We went on a tour of the Puketi Nature Trail, guided by a very cool woman named Helen. Her knowledge was of this area, and many other New Zealand nature-related subjects was impressive. The forest itself is pretty impressive, with Kauri trees as old as 800 years! The boadwalk that serves the tour is easy to walk, and overall, it was time very well spent.

The kauri trees were magnificent knowing some of them were over 600 years old. This is certainly what NZ was like thousands of years ago. The boardwalk trails were flat and easy to get around. It does not take a lot of time - less than an hour is fine. Out guide was very good and our tour group learned a lot about the trees and animals. No facilities and limited parking. It does get cool at that altitude and under the trees, so bring a jacket.

Highly recommend this walk. There are two walks. One is the 10 minute board walk around a number of very large Kauri trees, then you can drive about 1.5kms to the Motor Camp to do a 1 hr loop walk. It actually took us about 40 minutes and we were not hurrying. Again some great Kauri trees. Well worth the effort. There are some stunning views over the surrounding district as you drive there and back due to the elevation of the park.

We had a very passionate guide. Unfortunately , this was our 4th or 5th forest walk. I would enjoyed it more just walking through enjoying peace and quiet. Beautiful setting. Just like the Romans we came, saw, and went. Probably wouldn't need to spend more than 30 to 40 minutes there. Easy walk along path.

There are a couple of attractions in Kerikeri which require no entry fee and this is one of them. About 10 minutes north of Kerikeri there’s a turn off to the Puketi Forest. Drive about 10 minutes along the road until it turns to dirt and then turn right down to a gravel car park. (No charge). Lock the car and take the 5 minute boardwalk to the group of very impressive Kauri trees. It’s a wonderful sight.

I love this short walk through the forest. I do it regularly as Ilive nearby and find it therapeutic.
The towering kauri are magnificent and the peaceful energy of the bush is so relaxing.
Wheelchair accessible boardwalk.
Easy flat walk, so it's no trouble for everyone to do.
Best done when there is no one else there so it's just you and the forest.

This pleasant walk in Manginangina Scenic Reserve, abutting Puketi Forest, leads through a grove of kauri trees. This tree species, among the world's most ancient, normally lives more than 600 years and has been known to top 1,000. The Waipoua, Warawara and Puketi forests hold about 75% of New Zealand's remaining mature kauri trees. Because of their height and the fact that they shed their lower branches, towering kauri trees often fell victim to the need for sailing ship masts and spars as well as to the usefulness of kauri gum.
The boardwalk is wide and level, suitable for wheelchairs. There are nice viewing platforms and informative signs throughout. We didn't see the many birds that are here, but we certainly heard them!
TIPS:
--The sign at the entrance indicates this is a five-minute walk, but look closely: the "1" is gone. It's really a 15-minute walk, and you'll easily spend a half hour here looking up at the trees instead of down at your watch.
--This trail is a loop. As you walk in, take the path to the left if you're in a hurry and want to get to the tallest trees right away.

It seems a little bit eerie walking through this ancient forested habitat which is well pathed with wooden walkways with added safety handrails. The drive on the road to the forest is on a loose gravel surface restricting your speed and care must be taken if following another vehicle with gravel being thrown up. The carpark only fits about 8 cars and 2 coaches. We did not have advantage of a guide but this did not impede our pleasure of exploring this ancient site with its numerous species of plants we found out that this forest is one of the most diverse forest in New Zealand. It says it supports 9 threatened fauna species. The Kauri tower above you and are a perching place for many birds species “brown kiwi, kōkako, NZ pigeon/kukupa” calling out. Well worth a visit if passing.

How could you get here from a cruise ship docked at Bay of Islands?? Thanks!
Written January 10, 2020
We used Bay of Islands Tours Ltd. for a tour that included Kawiti Glowworm Caves, Hundertwasser Toilets, Makana Confections, The Kauri Workshop, Manginangina Kauri Walk and Haruru Falls. (I've reviewed each of those.)

I understand the road to the walk has some part of gravel road (unsealed), may I know which route has the least gravel distance ? Waiare Rd (from northeast of SH10) ? Pungaere Rd from southeast of SH10? Puketi Rd from SH1? Or Waiare Road from SH1?
Written August 22, 2018
Answering my own question after visited Puketi Forest, the route with least gravel road is Pungaere Road from State Highway 10, shortly after BP Waipapa. Only the last 4km is gravel road.
