The trail through the Puketi Forest is beautiful, green, lush, and scenic. You'll hear native birds like the New Zealand fantail as you walk through the towering trees. It's a little like the redwoods in California but not as big as those. We learned a lot from our guide about the importance of the kauri trees to the Maori people, and about their culture/beliefs as well.

Drive in from Waipapa along pungaere road and first go right and walk the 5 minute loop track that is all board walk (a completely accessible track). What an amazing stand of Kauri.
Then.... retrace back along the road to the recreation reserve and the start of multiple tramping tracks to the 1 hour nature track loop. Lots of roots and steps but a good enough track. They have many many plaques and the diversity of plants is amazing along with more Kauri. We have walked many Nz bush walks over 60 years. This was beautiful.

The earliest reviewer is writing about the Puketi Forest. It's a nice forest relatively close to Paihia. The day we visited some of the roads were closed due to logging. The second reviewer, who wrote of the elevated walkways, is really talking about what's known as the Manginangina Kauri Walk. In his defense, the Kauri Walk is within the Puketi Forest but it's far from the only place to walk in the forest.

This is a must see if you’re staying in Kerikeri or Paihia. You can see these massive Kauri trees which are native to New Zealand without walking forever. The boardwalk is easy and safe and takes no more than 5 minutes. There is no excuse not to go.

Not far from Paihia - if you stay there for a vacation - is this ancient Kauri forest. It is well worth the one hour plus walk on a very good prepared walkway to admire this ancient nature, especially the giant Kauri trees.

We arrived just after midday to this beautiful cool nature site. Our guide was very informative explaining the history of the area and the animals that inhabit it. The walk is very easy and great for elderly and children, of which both were on our tour. A must for nature enthusiasts and photographers. The board walks are very safe and there are large areas with seats to rest.

If you are a major fan of Kauri trees and beautiful New Zealand forests, and you have visited the major, more easily accessible and more touristy groves, Puketi is well worth a visit. It is a bit "out of the way." You must drive on an unsealed road for either 13 or 15 kilometers to reach 2 of the 3 trails. But, we encountered no other tourists on the trails, until we had finished. That is wonderful, but not uncommon in New Zealand. We hiked 2 of the 3 major trails: one very short but majestic; the other a bit longer (one hour) and stunning.

Wonderful setting, informative panels along the way, and just a fantastic way to stop and marvel at the greenery and these amazing trees.

We enjoyed our little 2h track on Puketi forest.
We started front of Adventure Puketi and walked through fields before entering in Puketi Forest.
This track is very nice and quiet and colors are very wonderful with green and red !

I understand the road to the walk has to drive thru some part of gravel road (unsealed), may I know which route has the least gravel distance ? Waiare Rd (from northeast of SH10) ? Pungaere Rd from southeast of SH10? Puketi Rd from SH1? Or Waiare Road from SH1?

We came in from the town of Kerikeri on Pungarere Road. The road is gravel, but not unsafe. We parked and just crossed the road and less than 50 metres was the smaller boardwalk loop. There is a larger walk (which we didn't do) that is shown on the map at the start of the boardwalk. It shows there is a side road (unnamed) that comes off Waiare Road that you can drive right up to the walk. Also it shows the access to the walking track along Puketi Road as having a section of the walk that is currently closed.
I photographed the map for my review, but Trip Advisor answers do not allow links, so maybe if you go to my review where I have a photo of a sign- Welcome To Manginangina - and this is the map of the walks which show also the roads and how close they all are.
