We always used to go here when visiting Martinborough. It has always been that if you buy a bottle, your tasting is free. However, they have now changed it to $10 per tasting, regardless whether you buy a bottle or not. So this now puts the cheapest bottle at nearly $40. We won't be going back anymore, think they need to reconsider that decision.

We where on a wine tour of Martinborough last Thursday.
Our guide took us to this vineyard which was the first of four. When we arrived we where greeted by a Elderly Man saying "Hope you aren't going to be long as I have group due soon" great way to greet potential wine buyers. He didn't explain the wines we had to ask the questions basically wanted us out of there - waste of money for tasting. He advised he owned the land but leased the restaurant.
When we left about 15 mins later the other group hadn't arrived!! Definitely wouldn't recommend even our tour guide said he wouldnt be back. :(

I will start off by saying the wines I tasted were beautiful and well described by the member of staff. However, she was rude and abrupt. I can appreciate that this is a difficult time in the hospitality industry, but kindness and manners cost nothing and would have made the experience a lot better. We were a small group who had a lovely meal, but the restaurant was busy and the staff barely coping.

We visited for lunch based on a recommendation from friends. Staff were friendly and service was prompt and helpful. We enjoyed a delicious platter overlooking the vineyard with a lovely glass of rosè and pinot noir.

I am very disappointed with the lack of service at Margrain. I will never be returning here and will recommend to all my friends and family that they do not come here also. Be aware, the worst service we’ve had in Martinborough. Congratulations!

We stayed at Margrain Villas accom &as a "perk" the receptionist said we could wander up the road, show our rm key & get a free wine tasting...great way to start the weekend. On entering there were about 10 others in cellar door, on showing the room key, Kate says " that excludes some of the tastings and you get this tasting gl. The glass was a little tasting one whilst everyone else in CD had big, beautifully crafted wine gl...which we were only entitled to use for our wine tasting if we paid $10pp for tasting like the others. Happily pd tasting fees all day that day, but what I DO NOT like is to be made to feel like a second tier taster, just because I paid to stay in your accom. This perk is suppose to be a "value add". Where is the value at being made to feel small? It was so uncomfortable, we left very quickly, didnt enjoy the tasting and didnt buy anything either, dispite leaving town the next day with a case in the boot. BTW Kate, your claim of "having the best chenin blanc in the country" dished out time after time in CD, is complete rubbish as anyone with NZ wine knowledge would be aware that Milton makes the best Chenin in NZ and three outstanding tiers of it. Very disappointed, wont be back

A group of friends turned up to margarin very excited to wine taste, however we were greeted with a very rude reception and were told NO!! We were a group and were turned away in an abrupt manner with no one behind us to tast:
We were disappointed!

What a difference. Can't believe they are run by the same people!! From a bored receptionist at the Villas to Kate at the Vineyard! Chalk and cheese. KATE IS AMAZING!! She should be bronzed. The wines are stella too! We bought the Pinot Rose and the Chenin Blanc. Both to die for! Thank you for the wine. Thank you for Kate. Happy memories. If I could give 50 STARS it would.

What a great place to be for lunch. The waiting staff, in the main were young. They were open, honest and so willing to please. They were knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

The food was excellent. Apart from the odd personal preference, like more lemon/salt on the quinoa salad aspect of the Vegan bowl, everything was exactly on point. My partner in crime had the Pork belly and the verdict was "Delicious"

The outside setting was beautiful.
.
We had the "Flight of Five" wine option. We loved the opportunity to try five different wines (who wouldn't?) and while some were not to out taste we did choose what we tasted.

I can thoroughly recommend the cafe at the Margrain Vineyard as a place to lunch and have a great value for money experience.

We stayed here for 4 days with two other couples. We enjoyed the wine tasting and the hostess was friendly and helpful with info about the area. We stayed in the house, not the villas. The accommodation was fine and the breakfast was lovely. Overall the property has a rustic feel , but is a little tired. The gardens definitely need a bit of tlc. We all enjoyed our stay👍
