The stromatolites at Lake Thetis at Cervantes are fascinating to see. However, at the time we went they were under water, and, not having seen them before, it took us some time to work out what we were looking at. I understand certain times of year are best - early in the year?

The boardwalk around the lake is also worth doing if you have the time. Not long, and easy walking.

I recommend seeing these anytime of the year as it's easy to do if you are in the area, but if you have the opportunity to choose your time, I suggest researching when the best time is.

We were travelling along the road and decided to stop off and have a look. It was pretty cool, something different but I wouldn’t go out of your way to see it, although it was cool and amazing. Free and good parking as never rush hour!

So here’s the thing; the earth is a bit over 4 billion years old, and stromatolites have been around for 3.2 billion (by comparison, the dinosaurs died out 0.06 billion years ago)
If that sort of statistic blows your mind; go and see the stromatolites; if your response is ‘so what’; skip them. They’re not much to look at, but what they represent is totally awe inspiring

The stromatolites in Lake Thetis isn't too far from the carpark area. There is a viewing platform that is visible once you get on it. It is quite interesting to see these little structures. The lake levels also seem to change with the tide since it was all underwater when I was there. It was a nice experience and it is part of the Lake Thetis walk.
The carpark is quite large but there didn't seem to be any toilets though.

TOTALLY CLOSED OFF. Boardwalk to Stromatolites wrecked in a big storm, now totally fenced off as is the entire beach. Old telegraph station as is the little settlement area also totally closed and fenced off. A few people camping out in parking lot, not sure why. Bathrooms still working and some displays to read but that’s all. Pretty bleak. You won’t be spending more than a few minutes there should you decide to stop. No kidding.

Where do I start with this amazing 3.5 billion year old life form and living fossil. Over 900 million years these amazing life forms converted our atmosphere primarily produced by active volcanoes from CO2 and SO2 with nitrogen to primarily Oxygen and Nitrogen, the reason we are alive and can survive on planet earth today. No people, as I say, we are living in a dynamic world and things do change but we are not around long enough to see it. How it was, now and how it will be in future will always be changing. Yes, would come back again just to say I have seen these amazing lifeforms. The walk way does give you a close view without damaging the fragile mounds.

These primitive life forms once covered the earth and have only survived in a few places by luck, in environment (very saline) that discourages most of the species.

At least these are accessible. Hamlin pools walkway has been closed since the cyclone and nothing is happening to repair it, a disgrace, as many people come to see these unique life forms and are so disappointed at Hamlin.

It was interesting to see these stromatolites. I would have liked there to be a bridge or something to go over so you could take better pictures though. We walked right around the lake but the stromatolites were only on one small section near the end of our walk

Stroll along the board walk to the salty lake to see the many small fish and the oldest organisms on the planet, the stromatolites, which are billions of years old.
Its hard to imagine something so old, still in existence and living on earth.
These stromatolites created oxygen which enabled life to develop on Earth.

Entry is free, and is a little off the beaten track, and only 2 km from Cervantes town.

Not that much to actually see, but the history is interesting enough to make the visit worth while. Bit of wa walk to get there (or you can park 200 metres away) but the walk up from the beach is better.

You only need ten minutes to get your photo and move on. There is a 30 min walking track if that is more your thing. There’s signs telling you about the history too.
