- Rebecca FCleveland, Ohio75 contributionsDelicious lunch - beautiful beach - amazing Painkillers! This is a perfect beachside lunch on the most beautiful beach in the BVI! Our excursion boat for the day pulled up, and we jumped into the crystal clear blue water, and then walked up onto the Sandy shore, where we ordered painkillers and food for everyone! The food was delicious. First come first serve seating at picnic tables out on the beach. Afterwards, you can just relax in the water with, a painkiller from the home of the original recipe!Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 8, 2024

We arrived by ferry / taxi around 9am and had breakfast (see photos). There was plenty of availability (got to pick our own beach chairs under the palm tree for the day). There was no cost for beach chairs. We enjoyed the sand and sun. Lunch at Soggy Dollar was great as well (see photos).Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 5, 2024
- Shawn OMoscow, Idaho33 contributionsTruly great, as advertisedGreat all around. Beach is top quality, water wonderful, boats that arrive are fun to look at and the food and drinks are not priced as high as they could be. Get there earlier (10:30 or so) to get a seat and spend the day in one of the Caribbean’s best spots.Visited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 31, 2025

I really don’t leave reviews unless I come across something exceptional that is in an equally unique location. Though that is a bit cliche when reviewing the Soggy Dollar Bar (because it’s the place in the Caribbean every tourist visits), it’s not because of the name. It’s great because it’s a unique place lost in time, but steadily overseen by the very best JVD has to offer. It’s a place where I would dare you to show me a better view (realistically).
Considering the view is relatively unmatched, I’ll shift to the better part… The silent protector and watchful knight of SDB, Leon. This guy BRINGS IT, day in and day out. Former bartender at the internationally known Foxys, Leon crafts drinks from his former establishments to others across the BVIs.
If life is a beach, Leon is just playing in the sand. Leon challenges himself to make every drink better than the last, so while no drink is ever the same, there is a steadiness and consistency to the pour that will keep you coming back because it’s a bit consistent and a bit improved every time.
Last point, the food. The people of SDB watching the grills in the back are exceptionally skilled when it comes to delivering bar food to offset the heavy booze drinks poured by Leon. The food is fresh and you will get plenty of it, which you will need because Leon is pouring them heavy. All of that is to say, on a scale of 1 to 10, Leon is a 20.
Though I’ve taken several lyrics from Lil Wayne in composing this review (in honor of Leon), I’ll leave you with a little Kenney Chesney to properly close it out…
“There ain't no empty glasses, they're playing drift away. That's where the magic happens, back up in that little bay.”
Cheers

Soggy Dollar is a must do on everyone’s BVI trip with great happy hour and great French Fries. I did purchase a few items at their store, enjoyed a few beverages and soaked up the view and atmosphere. The Soggy Dollar is named that because of swim from the boat to the shore with your wet money. The negative in my opinion is not everyone can swim that far and when you dinghy in the waves make it a burden to get in and out because there is no dockage. Even though it was a pain getting from the catamaran to shore it was a worthwhile experience and glad that I made the effort. Soggy Dollar is a must do.

An institution in the BVI. Not a relaxing visit by any means, it’s crowded and not easy to find a table. That said, I was impressed that the Painkillers were half the price we had elsewhere on the islands. If you’re on Jost Van Dyke it’s worth the experience given the reputation and history.

Wildly over-hyped. Tourist trap.
Packed with cruise ship people. You know....the kind that grab beach chairs then put their stuff on a table for 3 hours without sitting there to "reserve it". They take over cornhole for an hour not even acknowledging others waiting to play.
Drinks were terrible. Terrible.
Essentially an over-priced t-shirt shop or you can think of it as an Applebee's on the beach.
Better food & drinks in the restaurant to the right.

Off the ball and set sail for the island of Jost Van Dyke for our next mooring and last overnight on the boat (Jost is pronounced Yost).
We pulled into White Bay and dropped anchor because the four balls were taken. Tom really does NOT like the anchoring process as there are way too many moving parts / things. Dinghied ashore and we went to The SOGGY DOLLAR Bar and restaurant for two "Pain Killers" for Tom.
Finally found a location during this plague where there were PEOPLE to talk to.

So last time my wife and I were at Soggy Dollar was 2011. Pre- Irma and pre-me being 55.
Place had the same vibe - good drinks and social area. What had changed was the amount of very drunk and very loud “Proud American” patrons. Hadn’t seen such a large and obnoxious display of red white and blue and from such drunk people.
That being said it is not Soggy Dollars problem.
Pain Killer is still the best in the world. Everyone claims their own but hands down the best.
View is beyond description. Most beautiful beach there is on the BVI.
Ran into a lot of great people here. Lots of fun.
Can’t wait to come back.

The iconic and must see/do Soggy Dollar Bar while at JVD. The painkillers are only $7 and go down rather smooth. They taste even better when in water as the waves roll onto the shore. The Mahi Mahi Sandwich was fantastically fresh with just the right amount of spicy seasoning and unctuous sauce.

A great place a must see.! They have the live WebCam. This was our first time there, our friends kept telling us how much we will love it because they have been there many times and it did not disappoint us! I can’t wait to return back again one day. And the gift shop has lots of cool things. We got some cool bar mats for our bar at home. And the painkillers were very good I must say.

This tour is about a 45 minute catamaran ride each way, but the destination was worth it. The beach was fabulous!!!! The Soggy Dollar bar was great! The lobster rolls are to die for!! Everyone was so friendly. Great day!!!

What a change. The first time I visited Soggy Dollar there was just our boat in the bay and four people at the bar. Yup you could actually sit at the bar in those days. Today the beach is lined with numerous new bar restaurants to choose from. The day boats bring dozens if not hundreds of people ashore every day
But Whitesands Bay is still stunningly beautiful. Food and service excellent. Painkillers good but for my money not as good as Pussers in Sopers Hole.

Hi - How did you get over to the bar? We'll be on a Norwegian Cruise - not sure if you go via Tortolla or St. Thomas. txs!

Anyone planning a visit on July 4th from St Thomas? I would like to find a few couples interested in sharing a charter from Red Hook- I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend at Soggy Dollar on July 4th
Written May 6, 2023
Hi, Sharon. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Is White Bay Beach/soggy dollar bar accessible other than by boat ? NCL cruise excursion is sold out. Or is there some sort of water transport other than private charter ?

Soggy Dollar is on Jost Van Dyke. If you are staying on Jost, you can get there by cab or walk depending on where you are staying and how 'in shape' you are. Cab ride is generally $5/person. If you are staying on another island, you can take a public ferry there, depending on the island. There is one that goes to Jost from Tortola. Know the ferry schedule ahead of time, it changes. The bar/restaurant to the right of Soggy Dollar, I think it's Hendo's has great drinks and food. Most of Soggy Dollar's merchandise is overpriced. There are lounge chairs on the beach and bathrooms. Soggy Dollar has a live beach camera and wifi so if you can wave to family/friends live. It was a fun place. Take bug spray, they come out....

Is your bar open all year long as hoping to visit in July 2020 but am aware this is low season in BVIs?
Many thanks
Written December 16, 2019
It's absolutely open and busy in July. FYI, most places in the BVI don't start closing until early August.
Written February 18, 2020
How frequent and reliable are the ferries from Cruz Bay to Jost in November/December? I hear they just started running again reciently.
Written August 7, 2019
I’m not sure...I spend the extra money and take the cruise line excursion just to be safe we get back to ship on time.
Written August 18, 2019
Can someone explain the $70 fee ? Is it everyday, per person?
Written May 14, 2019
This is a BVI fee if you're coming from the USVI. It has nothing to do with the Soggy Dollar.
Written July 5, 2019
Is there any way to get here without taking the NCL excursion? It’s fully booked for my February cruise and we’re dying to get here.
Written December 4, 2018
Not sure what excursion you are referencing but there are multiple ways to get to JVD. There are ferries from St Martin and Tortola. Easiest way is via private charter.

Are they still able to take credit cards after hurricane? Going to be there in March 2018.
Written January 1, 2018
I imagine it will depend on whether the cellular service is back and covering White Bay. Best option would be to phone first.
