I nearly cried when I saw for myself what Parks Canada have done to the lovely walking trail to Western Brook Pond. Gone is the narrow boardwalk and gravel path trail to be replaced by a 20-foot wide gravel 'road' and the vegetation cleared each...More

A boat ride into the “fjord” was a highlight of our trip. Cold on the way back but worth every shiver. Stunning scenery.

This is a must when visiting Gross Morne. Walk was a little longer going in because on that particular day it was warm. Bring water, sun screen, hat & warmer clothing for when you’re out on the water. There is a small restaurant /rest rooms...More

...The gravel road for the 3 kilometre hike in is considered an eyesore by some and an upgrade by others. For us, definitely less appealing than the previous nature trail. Perhaps with time as the vegetation reestablishes, it will be better and complement the lovely...More

The approach is now a gravel road rather than a path with boardwalks, with minimal views along the way. The views at the pond are spectacular but it’s a landlocked fjord due to isostatic rebound and there are no sea stacks... More

I recommend either the Trout River Pond boat tour next to the famous Tablelands - you can drive to within 100 m of the wharf. They use a zodiac so for boarding, you might need some help, but there is a floating ramp, and... More

Guided Tours in Gros Morne (5 Replies)
Ive seen a number of posts - primarily related to the hiking from Western Brook Pond to see iconic views above. I'm looking for advice on the broader topic of guided tours in Gros Morne. We will be in GMNP for 4 full days in early June. We are reasonably experienced and fit hikers from Calgary and we have done quite a bit of research on the hikes in GMNP. There are lots of hikes obviously that sound great - and only so much time so we will have to make some choices - so we are considering...More

Gros Morne Adventures in Norris Point has offered guided hikes in the past. They have also taken clients on unmarked day hikes. There are new owners and I am not sure what all they will offer this year. There is also a new outfit called Adventure Gros Morne in Trout River. I do not have personal experience with either but just wanted to let you know they exist.

Three weeks in Newfoundland. Looking for advice. (5 Replies)
I have been reading this forum for three months trying to get advice for our June vacation in Newfoundland. I have read lots of good ideas, and I am looking for input for our travels. We will be traveling in a focus, pulling a teardrop camper. We will spend most of the nights in provincial parks. We are also looking for boondocking opportunities, and would like to know where others have dry camped. The times and distances are from the Newfoundland distance sites. We now have the route, and...More

You have a nice itinerary planned and it is obvious you have put a lot of thought into it. DAY 1 as well as Blow me Down PP do drive a bit further to Bottle HArbour and do some of the walks there. It is a delightful place. Make sure you stop at Marlaine's Tea Rooms in Lark Harbour too. I'm a bit confused as you have Day 6 drive to Cape St Mary and also on Day 10? Is this a mistake on Day 6 as this is considerably more than your estimated 65miles. You are also doubling route and sites......More

Bears in Gros Morne National Park. (10 Replies)
Hi good folks, I am planing small hike on Western Brook Pond Trail for one or two days in May 2017 and wondered how is the bear situation in NF. I used to hike in Kananaskis and always carried bear spray with me. I also have bear haze training but this time will be with two girls so the situation is a little bit different. Thanks!

In eastern Canada, unlike Kananaskis, there are black bears but no grizzly bears, and generally fewer bears overall. Black bears still need to be taken seriously of course, and you need to take precautions, but hikers in eastern Canada don't tend to arm up with bear spray and such to the extent that they do in grizzly country. I mean, some people do carry bear spray in the east, it comes down to personal comfort, it's just not seen as such a pressing issue. The precautions widely advised in...More
