What a gem!

This little hidden treasure in Ilford is both surprising and beautiful. Steeped in history and some mystery it's a must for locals who should be very proud of it and for all history buffs. Who knew!

Lots of History in this place
Sep 2019
Surprisingly, I'm quite local to this place and always took it for granted, now that I have been inside, I am amazed that I hadn't been before, This was the place where they used to put all that suffered with Leprosy in London, Don't worry it's all super clean now and well worth visiting... There is some very old parts still intact and stained glass and monuments - This survived King Henry the 8th - Wow! The volunteers who show you around are also very courteous, helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the place.
I'm ever so glad I went, I'll probably go again.

A Historical Gem

An amazing building which managed to survive Henry 8th.
I recommend the monthly open days as the volunteers run tours and are very knowledgeable. They also had home made cakes.

I finally visited this local historic sit’s in the centre of Ilford - what a lovely visit! Knowledgeable volunteers can tell you the history of the site, the stained glass windows and ceilings are beautiful. I’ll be attending an actual service at some point soon to soak the beauty again!
Definitely worth a pop in on their open days or Thursday lunchtime service.

Interesting historical building hidden in the buzz of modern Ilford
Dec 2017 • Friends
The open days provide interesting information on the buildings history (and that of Ilford itself). Whilst there has been a massive rebuilding of the property, there is still much to take in.

I had seen this place from the outside as i was staying nearby and one day happened to find it open . it only seems to be open a few times a week . what an interesting and historical little gem and such a dedicated and welcoming group of people who were there that day .i hope that the local council and people give them all the support that they deserve in trying to continue the obvious historical importance of the old history of Ilford

An outer-London/ESSEX cultural/historical jewel
Aug 2015
A small but hugely interesting site which can help to put in context the policy of King Henry VIII re the dissolution of the monasteries, whatever your personal view may be.

The delight arises from the fact that, even in London's urbanizing spread over past decades, such historic jewels have survived.

Open days at week-ends are regular in summer, with (free) helpful guides to help with your understanding/interpretation.

Yes; Essex does have culture and history!

This place is in the middle of a large one way system and not many people realise it is there as it is surrounded by traffic. It was founded around the year 1145 and parts of the present building go back to the 12th Century. It is not very big but contains many interesting monuments as well as very old stained glass and painted glass windows. At present it is open on the second Saturday of each month for visitors to look around.
