Good way to spend a few hours for nature lovers
Oct 2021
Small but pleasant reserve. Wish the hides had been supervised in some way tho as the usual rude birders who stake a place at opening and stay glued for hours . maybe a key tag or similar ? I also wish I knew the cafe was not a cafe at all . More tea and cake , snack so be aware if you drive a distance. Toilets clean lots to see if the weather is poor. Hoping the new things will improve things. Overall not bad for few hours . I guess in the summer there will be much more to see .By the way the way the entrance was situated it was easy for everybody to just walk in . We paid as we always do but the walk to pay and then back was irritating in the rain .can I suggest if only eating outside available that some kind of shelter would be a great improvement

Dizzydebs1, Many thanks for you review of our Reserve. We are run by volunteers and do not have the band width to provide people in the hides to supervise. Sorry to hear that you were not happy with the selection at the Café. The entrance was only temporary whilst the new Discovery Hub and garden were being worked on, it was the only way we could still open and operate the Reserve. Thankfully the work is all finished and we had our grand opening yesterday, the visitor centre has reopened too so indoor eating and drinks are available again. We hope that you come back soon and visit the new Hub.

Excellent summer morning!
Aug 2021
Great day out at Warnham Nature Reserve. Lots of animals and mini beasts to see from the Hides and at the feeding stations dotted around. Also visited the cafe afterwards for a coffee and cake and to eat our picnic lunch (food and drink not alot on the reserve). We love it here and everyone is always friendly from park wardens to the lovely ladies serving in the cafe. Cant wait for the discovery centre to be open.
Only downside was the number of mosquitoes around the various ponds and the lake. We all got bitten several times so will be using mosquito spray next time.
Thanks for a lovely morning!

Leetemum, Many thanks for your lovely review of the Reserve. We are pleased that you saw lots on your visit from the feeding stations and the hides. Thank you for the praise for the park wardens and our volunteers in the café, I will pass this on to them. We too are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Discovery Hub and the new gardens in front of it. Shouldn't be too long now. Sorry that the inhabitants of the dipping ponds found you attractive to bite, a downside at this time of year. We look forward to welcoming you back on the Reserve again soon

Park Warden - Verbal Abuse
Aug 2021
I was extremely disappointed by the conduct of one of your park wardens. I was at the park on the 19th of August at approximately 3 pm.

Visited with my daughter and partner. We popped our heads into one of the hides, the door was open and technically this is an outside structure. Current legislation dictates that I don't have to wear a mask indoors anyway. I would have been more than happy should the park wardens conduct been different.

He immediately started shouting at me to wear a mask. Which surprised me as we were in a wildlife hide where the etiquette is to be quiet. He shouted and behaved terribly in front of my family. I remained calm, explained the law to him and he continued to berate us despite clearly being unaware of current legislation.

I would like someone senior from the park to contact me regarding this shocking behaviour. Having been a Horsham resident I am appalled and would hate to think such an individual has been conducting himself in this manner to other guests of the nature reserve.

It is a great destination and one I have attended regularly and am very fond of the reserve.

Trick7000, We are sorry to hear that your visit to the Reserve was not up to our usual high standard. I have contacted the Head Warden regarding the incident and hopefully he'll contact you shortly. We hope that this incident has not put you off visiting the Reserve again.

Excellent first visit
Apr 2021 • Friends
My first visit here and I found it exceeded my expectations. Entrance fee is modest and there were lots of types of nature to keep one’s interest. Lots of good birding. Butterflies to spot. Small mammals to observe. Some construction underway and some Covid19 safety measures in place but not an issue really. Marsh frogs were quite exciting. Lots for all ages to engage with. Will definitely return in a different season. Good observation hides.

Alan2303, Many thanks for taking the time to post a great review about our Reserve. We are pleased to hear that you think there is lots of nature to see for all ages. The current ongoing construction work is creating a new garden to lead down to the Discovery Hub, if all goes well these should be ready to open later in the year. We look forward to seeing you back in the Reserve in a different season. Regrds

Great place for birdwatchers.
May 2021
I visited Warnham Nature Reserve for the first time few days ago and I know that was not my last visit. A paradise for birdwatchers. There are few hides that help with watching and taking pictures of numerous species of birds. I love two hides with bird feeders, I could so many small garden birds as well as slightly bigger ones. I even managed to spot a little, cute bank vole searching for seeds under one of the feeders. I spend there about 4 hours and I felt I could easily spend more time there.
There is a car park free for visitors, coffee shop where visitors can gat a snack and a drink, also clean and tidy toilets. At the moment the entrance is £3 and cash is not accepted, cards only. Friendly staff.
My only regret is that the place is not open before 10am, it would be great to watch birds and wildlife very early in the morning. but as I said above I will deinitely come back there.

Ella507, Thank you very much for your kind response. Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit and spent a long time around the Reserve enjoying the varied wildlife. We usually do have some events when we open early, but due to covid these unfortunately are no longer running. We hope to start our event programme again when it is safe to do so, please keep an eye on our website and social media channels where these will be advertised. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

OWLET WATCHING
May 2021 • Couples
Today was the day of the Owlet for those who were lucky enough to see it.
It was a baby Tawney owl according to the many expert bird watchers
We were very fortunate to watch it for quite a while.
And just a few meters further on we were able to watch the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
Our walk was most enjoyable in the sunshine with a light breeze helping to spread the mixed aroma of bluebells and wild garlic
Following the one-way system boardwalk round we were also able to sit down and watch the Great Tit flying backwards and forwards to the nest above our heads feeding the youngsters
All in all its one of our favourite places to visit and enjoy the outdoors
We can also recommend that you sit down and enjoy a relaxing drink after your visit at the cafe staffed by the volunteers.
Photos show the Great Tits nest and then it's a spot the OWLET in the other one... Answers on a postcard please

John P, Many thanks for your very kind review. You were very lucky to see the owlet, I'm still waiting to see this myself. Glad you had good weather and could smell the bluebells and the garlic, it is such a lovely aroma. Pleased that you found the placed benches were handy for watching the great tit family. We're happy to hear that we are one of your favourite places to visit and enjoy the outdoors. Thank you for the recommendation of a relaxing drink at the Café. We hope to see you on the Reserve again soon

Great haven for nature but poor on service.
Apr 2021
Great to have this on our doorstep. A real haven for wildlife. Not so impressed by the attitude of people in tbe cafe who refused to serve hot drinks at 15:50 because they were closing at 16:00. It reminds you that we are still in the UK! We hope there's a more willing attitude when the new centre opens.

Hello B1709LNiang, Many thanks for your recent review and for appreciating that we have this great nature haven in Horsham. We are sorry to hear of your recent experience at Herons Rest Café. Our café closes at 16.00 and our volunteers who run this have lots to do upon closing so last orders are taken at 15.45 in order for them to do these and still be able to leave at a reasonable time.

Hide Closure not obvious on website
Oct 2020
A friend and I (both members) visited two weeks ago expecting the hides to be open as your website does not specifically mention closure. In fact, the wording gives the impression that the hides are available for use. Perhaps the hide closure could be made much clearer on the website thereby saving unnecessary journeys.

This is one of the very few reserves which has closed hides. Could it be because the site is council owned and therefore ultra cautious. RSPB and WWT sites all have accessible hides.

Dear Warren, Thank you for taking the time to complete a review. We are sorry that you found the Friends website not clear enough regarding the hides position. When the Herons Rest reopened and we updated the website we believed that as we didn't mention the hides it was assumed they would remain closed as per the original post. It takes a little longer for us to update the website than the Facebook and Twitter pages which are maintained daily. With regard to the closure of the hides it was deemed that due to the small sizes and the entrance and exit being shared, safe social distancing cannot be adhered to. We hope that you will come back and visit us again when we are fully open.

Disappointing
Oct 2020 • Friends
Went to reception where we were used to entering (pre covid), all locked up but tried to communicate through the window with the staff who just turned their backs when i asked how to get in. After wandering around the car park found a sign saying we could access the nature reserve via a turnsty by the golf course. Walked for 10 mins to find the entrances chained up.

282Job, Thank you for taking the time to post about your recent visit. We are sorry that you found it disappointing, during these COVID times the entrance has been moved to a newly constructed path by the path leading to Herons Rest and toilets. We thought this was clearly signposted but will this to ensure they are still there and visible. Herons Rest is open from 10 - 15 every day, unless it is very wet and windy as we are only operating a door service and it gets very cold with the door open. These days we update our Facebook and Twitter pages to say if we have had to close due to inclement weather. We do hope that you will visit us again in the future.
