Local pub
Dec 2019 • Friends
This is our local pub and it is under new management has had quite a bit of a revamp and the new landlord is trying to get the pub on the map so give it a try otherwise the community will lose this and I would hate to think it would become a Sainsbury’s😩

Disastrous Smoking Pig Booking
Aug 2018 • Couples
The Smoking Pig is a restaurant annexed to the Railway Tavern (it's actually located in the pub car park), and as far as we know, run and operated by the same pub / landlord.
Certainly all of the Smoking Pig meals are cooked in the pub, not within the dual floored converted building that houses the seating / tables.
On arrival at 8pm, one of the two serving staff advised that while they could see the booking, there had been no table allocation. There followed a short period while the staff member popped across to the pub for clarification, We were advised on her return that the table we had now been allocated was still occupied, but that the diners should be finishing shortly. Would we please follow her to the pub bar where we would be given a complimentary drink while we waited. It happens, so we agreed and sat ourselves at the "snug" bar which was close to the pool table - with our complimentary drinks - to wait. The pub had some kind of retro disco evening set up in the main bar that we could hear and see in the background. Unfortunately, the pub also had its piped music system going for the rest of the pub, added to which there was also a jovial and mixed reasonable sized crowd playing an impromptu pool tournament amongst themselves. So there was a lot of background noise going on around us, and this made it difficult to hold a conversation. Another waiting couple were also brought to our area and offered drinks while waiting.
After almost 45 minutes, we were finally taken across to the dining area and shown to a table on the upper floor. Two of the six tables were empty on sitting. The table adjacent to ours held four diners, the next table along (a 6 seater) was empty, then the last table in our row held six diners. One of the smaller tables across the aisle held three diners, while the last two seater table on that side was also empty. The low hubbub of conversations going on among the seated diners was a welcome relief from the pub bar. By the time that we had received some more drinks, and had placed our orders from the menu, we had been at the venue for just over an hour and hadn't eaten a thing.
While waiting for our starter (buffalo wings), a family of 6 - 4 adults and 2 children - were shown up and seated at the empty middle table. At this point, the noise level increased dramatically. The buffalo wings arrived after an additional 20 minute wait. We then had another 10 minute wait while we waited for side plates to eat the wings from.
They had cooled enough during their journey from kitchen to table and the wait for the plates to the point that we could devour them immediately. During the waiting time, the noise pollution from the new arrivals had reached to such a level, that the table adjacent to us had ceased all conversation and we could hear the diners beyond the new arrivals actually shouting to be overheard by their own company.
It was at 9.45pm, while we had still not been served our main course, when the adjacent table diners abruptly stood and left, followed almost immediately by the far-seated diners. It must have been when our mains arrived, that the new arrivals must have realized during a lull in their loud conversation, that there was complete silence.
We had ordered a full baby rack and a Fillet. Both arrived warm - naturally, as they had to be brought uncovered across the car park to the table - (the fillet nearly cold) but by this time we were so hungry we devoured them and finished them off in short order. Both meals came with ridiculously small chips portions. Annoying because the chips were well cooked. The baby rack coating was nothing special, though the rack was cooked well, and the steak was cooked medium rare as ordered and was a nice cut.
We left as soon as we had finished eating, paying the bill on leaving (the bill did not contain any drinks - neither the complimentary drinks nor the table ordered drinks) at just after 10pm.
Discussing the meal with the staff on leaving, we discovered that they were waiting staff and a chef short for the evening.
In summary, there is a definite lack of a really good dedicated steak and rib restaurant in this area, so we were really looking forward to this meal all day.
The really long wait to be seated, the oppressive family, the warm meals, the delays in service all contributed to making the evening a night we really want to forget - rather than one we would remember with fondness and want to repeat.
Should the staff have told us about the potential delays and staff shortages? Most definitely. We could then have made a decision on whether we wanted to remain, or to book for another day.
Should the staff have requested the family to moderate their noise levels? Definitely. The restaurant has a responsibility to ALL of their diners to ensure that they enjoy their dining experience - the restaurant are after all demanding a payment for the experience - and have the authority to act.
Would the food have had a bigger wow! factor had it been delivered hot? Possibly. But again, the decision to carry the food uncovered from the pub kitchen to the diners, across a car park with the food exposed to the air, effectively ensures that cannot happen.
Overall, this COULD have been an experience that we could have raved about. Sadly, it wasn't.
Would we try again? Probably not, as there are probably too many areas that should have been addressed long before our visit, and obviously haven't been, and that suggests a reluctance to improve.

Rude owner who made my autistic child feel absolutely worthless! Avoid this place it’s like an old western saloon with an owner who makes the rules up as and when he pleases! Poor choice of drinks and food, watered down beer, honestly I would give 0 stars if I could the place needs shutting down!

Miserable staff member (we said hello and just got silence and a dirty look), deafening music, no real ale on (it had run out and they didn’t bother or offer to change the barrel) sport on the telly. Won’t be back.
