The staff are amazing and everything in the museum and gallery was laid out perfectly. A brilliant place to visit, didn’t know this was on my doorstep the whole time.

Absolutely fascinating museum
Aug 2021
I had decided to stay in Manchester for a couple of days and one of the main reasons was to be able to get the train to visit this museum and I was so glad that I did, There is so much to see here and so much that is of interest, Great to be able to find out much about the towns history and particularly the importance of cotton cloth making. I had a fascinating conversation with one of the volunteers who was so informative having worked at a local mill. There is a quite outstanding collection of coins and manuscripts, I was amazed at the variety and quality of the exhibits and the art collection is another "star" of this outstanding museum and art gallery,

Great little museum!
May 2021 • Friends
Up in Lancashire for a few days from London, I decided to pop into this little museum rather than trail round the usual shops. What a lovely surprise! I particularly liked the Bank Top exhibition and the ground floor displays of Blackburn’s past - really interesting and informative with super friendly helpful staff. Anyone visiting Blackburn should take a look here and find out how this town has developed from its industrial history - entry is free and you can see it all in an hour or so. Great little place - I’ll be coming back next time I’m the area.

A hidden gem on my doorstep
Jun 2021 • Solo
It’s surprising what good places are on your doorstep!! As a Blackburnian I have lived away for 18 years. On a trip back to see family, yesterday I decided to be a tourist in my hometown. The museum is in a beautiful Victorian building with fantastic internal original features, especially the staircase. It’s not huge but contains so many interesting things.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
I like the way the exhibitions are laid out in themes with How Blackburn developed into an industrial hub, the workers and children’s lives detailed, then exhibits of weaving and spinning machines. The illustrated manuscripts room was a bit gloomy for me (low light protection of the works), loved seeing the Egyptian mummy again and the paintings. The Bank Top photo exhibition with accompanying written leaflet is very interesting about the history and current day aspects of immigrants living in Blackburn.
An hour well spent. Thank you

Well worth a visit so much to see
Jun 2021 • Couples
This is a lovely museum crammed full of interesting items and documents relating to Blackburn's past. I was also surprised how many beautiful paintings were in the art gallery on the first floor. The lady on reception was very friendly and helpful giving us information on other places to visit in the locality

Japanese woodcut prints and cotton looms
Aug 2019
Woodcuts and looms don't sound as though they belong in the same sentence but they are in fact both housed under Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery's roof, and in my view are the highlights of the collection. General impression is that the collections could and should be freshened up so that they can compete with similar sized institutions (thinking of Bolton in my locality). It probably all boils down to a question of funding (or lack of it).
