In July and August there is a cheese market in Edam on Wednesdays. A wonderful tourist event in this charming little town.
The market is only on Wednesdays from the beginning of July to the penultimate Wednesday in August from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
It starts with an opening at the town hall and then continues with a small parade to the cheese market. There, the classic cheese trade is recreated for tourists, and a few meters away, the typical Edam cheese balls are unloaded from small boats by throwing.
Everything is so charmingly depicted and makes the tourist heart beat faster. Certainly, things seem badly improvised, and cheese hasn't been traded that way for a long time. But it just has its charm.
After the cheese market we moved on, and the place should have sunk back into its sleeping beauty.

It is a perfect place to try countless varieties of cheese. Very cozy store. Cheeses of all prices and sizes. I'm sure you have some. All the employees are very friendly. Almost everyone speaks English. Some Spanish.

If you are considering the Country tour tickets from the 'Tour&Tickets' kiosk.. Consider doing it yourself!. Tour prices range from 40euro to 89 euro per person.
Take the tram to Central Station (I took #4). When you go in the station, go all the way to the back(waterside) and up the stairs to the bus lanes. Look for bus #316 and purchase a 'Waterland ticket' which is 10euro and good for the day. I got off in Edam first, a charming village and of course, visit the Edam Cheese weighing house. The auction is every Friday.
Return to where you got off the bus, go across the street to Lane A and catch bus #118 to Volendam. Get off at 'Zeestraat' and wander down to the harbour. This town is exceptionally touristy but do stop and have a small portion of the little pancakes, delicious! I didn't spend much time here but you could likely wander around for a couple of hours. The boat ride to Marken departs right from the harbour and costs 7.50 euro for a one way ticket. Marken is very small, quaint and has an interesting wooden shoe museum. I stopped for an unremarkable lunch at one of the restaurants on the harbour.
To return to Amsterdam, follow sign to bus stop and catch # 311 back to the Central Station through very picturesque countryside.
I took around 5 1/2 hours and my transportation costs were 17.50 euro.
If you also want to see Zaanse Schans, you can take Bus # 391 from Central Station, but out front, and the bus name is Connexxion.

I'm not a fan of organized tours mostly because I don't like restrictions. If I like a place I want to stay longer, if I don't, why waste any time? We went to Edam by bus, it's about 25 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. The village is just dreamy, the scenery is breathtaking, just perfect for relaxation! The cheese market show was the bonus! It takes place at the square, every Wednesday in July and August and it's all about tradition. They have it all: a cheerful band, traditional clothes, horse and carriage, it's unbeleivable! You can taste all kind of cheese - my personal favourite contains olives and tomatoes - and purchase as well! You can go for a long walk around, sit on a bench and just enjoy the view! Talking about total relaxation!

This is not a real cheese market, but is more of a production put on for tourists. If you want to see a more authentic cheese market, visit Alkmaar on a Friday morning, during the season.

We took a lovely bus from Central station in Amsterdam and arrived in Edam just in time to follow the village band to the grand opening of the cheese market. Theatrical and fun. I had the best pastry of my life from a large bakery vendor who was selling at the market. The city was in full bloom with gorgeous pink hydrangeas which added to the festive atmosphere. It was a fun and memorable day.

On our last day we made a snap decision to make the most of our regional travel ticket (having already been to Zaanse Shans the day before)
We took the 314 bus from the bus station on the river side of central station. The bus was clean and has screens to tell you which stop you are at. This took 25 mins to reach the village of Edam.
The village is truely a hidden gem (although granted may be much busier in peak season and saturdays) The main square feels like a little countryside village with a cafe and museum and a few little shops. Not in the slightest bit touristy.
Looking for a map we wandered into the tourist info and the really helpful staff gave us a free map and showed us a small book that offered a self guided tour around the village that takes around 2 hours but you could skip places if you wished to make it shorter. This was our best purchase of our trip to Holland. So much info and whilst we had to really think about the directions for a moment as they weren't always terribly clear it made it a bit of an adventure.

The cheese market puts on displays on Saturdays for tourists with people in traditional clothes. We visited on a Wednesday and loved our visit even though we didn't get to see this.

Food and drinks are also much cheaper than in Amsterdam, the cheese shop is priced the same as its the same company.

We arrived in Edam for the weekly summer cheese market demonstration about 45 minutes before it began, only to discover all of the seats were taken and those of us crowded to see the activity in the drizzling rain. We're hard pressed to see anything at all due to the layout of the covered seating areas blocking the view of those of us standing behind them or near them. My husband gave up trying to see at all and stepped back to a building's porch. This was very sad, as I had specifically brought him from Amsterdam for the day just to see the market, but it just didn't work out. So, if you want to go to this summertime-only event, please arrive early!
PLUS sides: I enjoyed seeing the communities along the way on the bus ride from Amsterdam's Central Station to Edam and back, we bought some delicious Edam cheese and really enjoyed walking around the beautiful little town of Edam. The woman who was trying to explain what was happening at the market spoke the same thing in five languages. I found this fascinating. My husband found it to be distracting.

It was very easy to get the Edam Market. There was a parking lot right off the highway and then a quick 5 min walk into the very cute town of Edam. The market was worth watching for half an hour - with the old men dressed up and the band playing along. But then the highlight was walking through this beautiful little town. We went to one of the shops and bought a chunk of cheese, some baguettes and sandwiches and had a picnic right along the river.

This was the perfect antidote to the gritty city - the village is beautiful and charming. On Wednesday mornings they have a reenactment of the cheese market and all kinds of vendors selling delicious treats and of course, cheese. The town's museum, a 400 year old house, is well worth the visit. To get there, go to Central Station information center on ground floor and buy a Waterland bus pass. Explore the surrounding villages - really sweet and a literal breath of fresh air after a few days in Amsterdam!
