Visit
Feb 2020
A lovely place to visit specially in the summer. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the tour without a guide in February. There is audio at certain points (only Dutch). Lots of information about the forestry projects and tools used. The coach house is used for catering now. It has been renovated beautifully. An interesting history of the owners together with the portraits. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Nice castle in an amazing environment
Oct 2019
Doorwerth castle is a really nice castle. Not the best I've seen, but still very good. Some of the interior is nicely decorated, but other parts are expositions about the history and the surroundings. There was also a painting exposition when I visited (not sure if that's always there). There's a good restaurant where you can have lunch, a drink and some delicious pie. The staff was very friendly. The castle is located at the edge of the Veluwe, the prettiest nature in the Netherlands. So be sure to walk around in the area. There are some walking routes to follow. The best part, for me, was the apartment (above the castle gate) where I spent a few nights. Great rooms, nice beds, good showers (although I was missing a mirror) and a good kitchen. Very atmospheric. The room did have a TV with Netflix and central heating, so it's very nice in winter as well. There's a Bilderberg hotel as well, but I think it's closed outside vacation season. All in all, can recommend.

A highly memorable location, excellent food and service 10/10
Jun 2019
The first mention of the castle was in 1260 after it was invaded and burned to the ground. A new stone castle was built. In 1280, the castle was once again invaded and the bailey destroyed. It is speculated that the castle included a small hall keep, had walls that were 1 metre thick and stood two stories tall. Like other castles in the Netherlands, Doorwerth Castle has a surrounding moat originally fed by the River Rhine. The castle was expanded during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and is currently rated the 4th most impressive castle in Netherlands. We had a Black Tie Gala Dinner, with real candles hanging from chandeliers attached to the wooden roof, in one of the outbuildings, perhaps previously a coach house.

Castles are always high on our list of places to visit in Europe and we found several lovely castles in the Netherlands. Kasteel Doorwerth was definitely in the top five of the castles that we visited. Restored beautifully and the displays and rooms are lovely to see. Highly recommend

Castle one of the oldest in Holland
Apr 2019 • Couples
What Holland is usually associated with? For me the answer was simple: cheese, tulips and windmills. But I never thought about Holland as a country of castles. Last weekend I visited Kasteel de Haar and this weekend I was in Kasteel Doorwerth. Castle Doorwerth is located close to Arnhem in the picturesque place with river Rhine nearby. Every last Sunday of the month they also have actors in medieval costumes coming and telling stories about Castle. I have seen actors in costumes in the kitchen, main hall and in the armor room where you can even try some metal costume on. Believe me, it’s very heavy and I can’t imagine that someone was wearing this costume for defence before.

Castle Doorwerth is one of the oldest remaining castles in Holland with its history that dates back to the 12 th century and it is really worth visiting. It has excellent museum with the paintings inside, rooms decorated in medieval style and collection of armor. They have also nice garden outside with flowers and vegetables growing.

In the yard you can also find acacia ( Robinia ) tree that is the oldest in Holland and was planted in 1600. Its trunk has 7 metres in circumference. Looking impressive and really really old. But still giving new leaves in spring.

Entrance fee 11.50 eur and free with museum card

As charming as a fairy tale

What an adorable place to visit I was entranced from the moment I walked over the draw bridge and entered the castle I followed the delightful aroma of cinnamon and found myself in the kitchen area set up ready for tea . The route takes you through rooms full of splendid artefacts and beautiful artwork hanging on the walls . I absolutely loved my visit here

Exterior over Interior
Jul 2018 • Solo
The castle itself is stunning and provides some really nice views both on the outside around the castle, and the courtyard of the castle. It is also very nicely situated on the banks of the Rhine river and surrounded by nice and quiet nature.

The interior of the castle had some cool quirky sights like the armory where you could try on some medieval armor or entire walls covered in hunting trophies. But overall the interior is quite bland and boring compared to other castles I've been to.

For anyone not willing to spend €11,50 on the entrance fee, consider just visiting the exterior of the castle, including the courtyard since it's free to enter. And then spending that money on the café/lunchroom that's next to the gate instead.

I was very happy of visiting this place. Ticket for 11EUR definitely cost it's money...
Better to make it a whole-day visit. No need to hurry there. After visiting the castle you can sit in a restaurant nearby of have a picnic in same area. It's a very beautiful place.
I've taken the map with castles in Gelderland and will visit more of them when have an occasion.

Well kept 12th century Castle
May 2018 • Couples
We found the castle interesting. All the rooms we looked at were well laid out and appeared typical of the time. The surrounding grounds have trees and paths to either walk or cycle. We stopped in at the coffee shop for a cool drink, which was buzzing with activity and lots of delicious foods like open sandwiches were coming out the kitchen. The acacia tree in the grounds is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. The one side is being propped up since it started to fall.

Beautiful castle
May 2018 • Friends
Since I live nearby, I have been coming here all my life. It's a beautiful castle with a great area where you can walk through the forest and a great courtyard with a beautiful tree. I've rated it average because of the inside and admission price. I like the inside up until it starts turning into the modern times. In my opinion the price isn't worth it. But, if you've never been inside, you should definitely give it a visit.
